Rumor: Chris Hemsworth offered lead role in Lethal Weapon reboot

05.08.2014

There aren't many details at this point, but it appears LETHAL WEAPON might be getting a reboot, and the rumor is Chris Hemsworth has been offered the lead role in the film. Sources have told The Tracking Board it won't be a full reboot though, and "the recent version of the script centers on the desires of an older cop’s son (presumably Riggs’) and his wishes to join the police force."

Joel Silver will produce the reboot, and Justin Lin (FAST & FURIOUS) is apparently attached to direct from a script being developed by Will Beall (GANGSTER SQUAD). It's also rumored Shane Black, creator of the original characters, will also be working on the reboot.

Since it won't be a complete reboot, there's still a chance some of the actors from the original films could appear in the new movie, especially if it's going to involve Rigg's son.

I'm not totally against a LETHAL WEAPON reboot, but it doesn't fill me with a warm, happy feeling either. My biggest concern is if Warner Bros. and the producers will want the film to be PG-13 so they'll be able to make as much money as possible at the box office. We've seen it happen with the TERMINATOR and DIE HARD franchises, and I wouldn't be too surprised if we end up getting a new LETHAL WEAPON flick without any balls.

I think Chris Hemsworth would be great as Rigg's son, but I do wonder what Warner Bros. and the producers' plans are for the reboot. If the rumor is true, hopefully more information on the reboot will be revealed soon.

Are you interested in a LETHAL WEAPON reboot, and what are your thoughts on Chris Hemsworth possibly playing Martin Rigg's son?

If it needs to be done, Hemsworth is a good choice.

I'm hip to this if they go the same route as the new Star Wars, old cast comes back to introduce us to new young cast. PLUS I think it was be cool to see Hemsworth as Mel Gibson's son!

Reboot/ Remake complaints are stupid. You're old, deal. The film is incredibly dated, it's prime remake material. You obviously we're not very good fans since you lost the point of the last two films. I am getting so tired of this every time a 20 year old property is remade /rebooted/ made into a tv show. it's always been like this. Enough.

Fucking Christ

Why does this shit keep happening? Next, Michael B Jordan will be cast as Murtaugh and Jonah Hill as Leo. Is nothing sacred and or safe in Hollywood? Can no one think for themselves? Because fuck it, I can reboot any fucking film out there. Apparently all it takes is the slight notion that people need to see a recent(ex: Spiderman) film "reincarnated" to get green lit.

Dear God do they have to remake EVERYTHING? Why not just make another generic cop/thriller? I know, money.

Rebooting this film is redundant, because...

...virtually every cop-buddy action-thriller made since is a riff on the same formula. It's why rebooting Point Break is pointless, we already got one when they made Fast and Furious in '01. Anyway, I'd rather have a Lethal Weapon 5 anyway. It would be satisfying as hell to see Gibson and Glover back in those roles one last time. So fuck this!

Oh I got one - Lethal Weapon Babied. All the familiar characters at toddlers that can speak. And then Baby Riggs and Baby Murthaug investigate like stolen pacifier mystery with Baby Mr. Joshua there and shit... Rated G. Fun for the whole family, just like a good Lethal Weapon movie should be.

Hollywood please stop making reboots of awesome movies. And don't make C grade sequels either. Only reboot a movie which failed before but had potential. Lethal Weapon deserves another sequel if done in an A class manner bot please no reboots. Look at Die Hard sequels. The only good thing the last die hard had was that hot russian babe. It would have been much better if it were completely another film with a different title.

NOTHING can touch the original Lethal Weapon. Why reboot a film that still holds up today and is better than almost every cop film that had been released since? The only way I'd be remotely interested is if Shane Black was full on writing/directing.

Shane Black or not,

FUCK THIS SHIT!

Robocop
Red Dawn
NOES

were all reboots that could have added something different to the story and been good but all were total shit. With Lethal Weapon I can't see anything to be gained other than money. The original and at least the sequel would have been good action movies but what put it over the top was Glover, Gibson and their chemistry. Any reboot will only taint the lethal weapon name further.

Never, never, never

I will never accept ANYONE playing these roles and I just don't understand the reboot. They could just as easily make a new buddy cop movie, like Bad Boys did years ago that stands on its own. This isn't a comic book movie or something with a huge history to it or a mythology and I don't know how many people would go see it just bc of the name. This is the worst type of reboot, whats next a new Dirty Harry?

I might be wrong, I haven't seen Rush, but Hemsworth just doesn't seem to have that star quality Gibson does. He's not terrible either, but not that charismatic

Why would one remake Lethal Weapon instead of just making another, and superior, sequel? Oh let me guess..."durrrrrrrrr they're too old?" What these morons don't seem to understand is remaking films depreciates the value of the originals. I mean, why do we need a new version for each generation? What's the point exactly? It makes no sense.

This Will Not Work

Hollywood!!! Get in the writing room, and come up with an original idea for a film, and stop rebooting and making sequels for everything. We need more inspiration, and less building off of other's creative success.

Who will play his opposite?

Idris Elba? And their boss will be played by Anthony Hopkins.....so if this is true, then this will be his second 80s reboot (first being a bad Red Dawn remake). Which will be the 3rd 80s reboot for Chris? Road House? Dirty Dancing? Fast Times at Ridgemont High? (He plays Spicolli)

There's these guys who own a bar in Philadelphia that actually filmed their own versions of Lethal Weapon 5 and 6. I saw them online and they're amazing! Give them a theatrical release and call it a day. It's strange though that the two main actors switch roles halfway through, but it's nothing to worry about.

Wouldn't it be strange because the only known Riggs child was born at the very end of Lethal Weapon 4 in 1998? So if they are going to focus the story around his son, they might have to get somebody younger than Hemsworth. I mean, I like the guy but he's going to be 31 this year. The math wouldn't add up... not that movie audiences would care anyways. It's all about cashing in on today's stars! What was I thinking?! Let's toss all logic out the window!

I hope he passes this offer up. He's too good of an actor to be starring in a reboot of Lethal Weapon. I mean look at the whole recent Point Break remake debacle and hatred.

I would MAYBE consider this if they had Black, Gibson, and Glover all back and on board for this. Having Pesci and Rock wouldn't hurt either.

As much as this makes my blood start to boil, I suppose if it was a reboot instead of a remake, it could work. Have Glover and Gibson in it and just have a younger new partnership beneath them to restart the franchise. Neither of them should be Martin Riggs and Roger Murtaugh.
