Rumor: DC and WB may be developing a Legion of Superheroes movie

While I tend to trust Latino Review and their sources about as far as I can throw them, this rumor is an intriguing one for the burgeoning DC Cinematic Universe. With BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE opening the floodgates by introducing the Dark Knight, Wonder Woman, Cyborg, and possibly Aquaman to the big screen, DC will not be able to benefit from Dwayne Johnson in their shared universe since the SHAZAM/Black Adam movie will be independent of the rest, the studio needs more characters to headline their own films.

With that in mind (and nine unrevealed projects in the pipeline over the next several years), the rumor has surfaced that Warner Bros has sent out copies of the DC comic LEGION OF SUPERHEROES to prospective screenwriters. This is far from a greenlit project that we can anticipate but rather feelers from the studio to see if they have a viable franchise concept on their hands. For those unfamiliar with the team, it was originally designed as a squad around Superboy and featured Cosmic Boy, Lightning Lad, and Saturn Girl. After multiple reboots and changes, the squad currently consists of Wildfire, Dawnstar, Timber Wolf, Tyroc, Tellus, Gates and Chameleon Girl.

LEGION OF SUPERHEROES has also been a frequent team on the small screen in animated series as well as a stint on SMALLVILLE. But, the team has never garnered much of a fanbase due to the convoluted backstory of the team and constantly changing line-up. The fact that Warner Bros could be exploring the team could mean they are either scraping the bottom of the barrel for ideas or they are looking to try and pull a GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY and reboot an obscure team with the goal of broadening their arsenal of characters.

Whatever the case may be, it seems that DC will be taking the opposite approach to Marvel and introduce multiple characters first before giving them their own films. It could work, but I wouldn’t hold my breath. BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE hits theaters on March 25, 2016.
