Rumor: Disney planning re-release of original Star Wars trilogy on Blu-ray

May. 16, 2014by: Alex Maidy

Consider this a rumor but one that seems highly likely to be true. Disney and Lucasfilm, riding high on the recently commenced filming of the latest STAR WARS movie, EPISODE VII, are planning to re-release the original trilogy in their unaltered glory, according to an intercepted email. Bleeding Cool claims the email indicates a VOD and Blu-ray re-issue of the STAR WARS trilogy, not the prequels, and not including any of George Lucas' Special Edition changes.

Fans have been clamoring for an HD edition of the Original Trilogy for years. This would remove the "Noooo!" from RETURN OF THE JEDI, the changed Force Ghost of Anakin, and Greedo shooting first, then slightly second. By not making these a theatrical release, Disney is likely catering to fans of the series, the group who they most desperately needed in their favor leading to J.J. Abrams' first entry in the new trilogy.

Which brings up a second rumor. Some are theorizing that Disney may be shying away from the Prequel Trilogy to the point of considering them part of the Legends universe and not the official canon. Statements from Lucasfilm have continually stated that the six feature films are the key canon, so I would highly doubt they would separate Lucas' prequels from the official timeline. However, I would not doubt that Disney is going to do everything they can to focus on the Original Trilogy and the Sequel Trilogy while ignoring the Prequels as much as they can.

STAR WARS: EPISODE VII hits theaters on December 18, 2015.

Just go get the DVD releases from like 2006. They all have the original uncut theatrical releases included.

Not going to happen

Since Fox owns the rights to distribution for the first film in perpetuity, and the distribution rights of the other films until 2020, it's not likely to happen. Just more rumor mongering unfortunately

I think the only person who didn't want the original unaltered versions released on DVD/Blu-ray was George Lucas. Now that he's no longer in charge, I doubt Fox would have any objections.

I doubt Fox will turn down the chance to make more $$$ from a STAR WARS Blu-Ray release. I can see some serious negotiations coming from Fox and Disney, though.

BleedingCool? News too good to be true without any credibility? I still don't think this is much more than a rumor but this is the exact reason why I never bought Star Wars on blu-ray - because of the possibility of releasing the original cuts.

I know it's a rumor, but I'm still psyched, I would love to watch the originals again. I never bought the Blu Rays because I was never a huge special edition fan. My favorite scene that I want restored would probably be Luke in the Wampa cave in "Empire", I thought the illusive shots of the creature were much more intense.

It would be awesome if Disney took the prequels out of the official canon.

Just in time for me to watch it with my son

I already introduced him to the STAR WARS universe with the very funny THE PADAWAN MENACE, and he's hooked. And yes, Han needs to shoot first.

YES!! I kept thinking I would eventually buy the current blu-ray set, but after reading this news, I am going to wait and buy this set instead.

and yes...I couldnt stand the prequel trilogy....its not like we didnt know the back story already.

Like you didn't know this was going to happen. Lol We've gotten so many re releases for Star Wars I'd be surprised if this in fact DIDN'T happen. Then years from now we'll get another in Ultra HD and after that we'll get another in a Star wars esque hologram itself. Not to mention re releases for the much berated second trilogy.

Unpopular opinion: I was fine with the "noooo". It was better than the "noooo" at the end of Revenge of the Sith.

Meh...I picked up the set that has the original unaltered they transferred from the laser discs way back when. I haven't watched them near as many times as I've watched either the Blu-Ray release they did fairly recently or the fan edit: Star Wars Revisited (still waiting for him to finish Empire...)
I don't think people really want that, they may THINK they do, but really...no, you don't.

I just want the option to enjoy the movies as I did as a kid. The Special Edition did very little to actually enhance the storytelling; I think it'd be great to have both versions of each film on the same Blu Ray, that way you can enjoy the one you like.

I don't own Star Wars simply because I don't want that horribly dated CGI infecting the original films. That CGI now looks far worse than the original effects back in the 70s & 80s.

Seriously

Why is it so hard for them to release the whole set!! Then you can make everyone happy, I'll never understand why it has to be so difficult. You release a whole big set that includes the unaltered originals plus the re releases and the prequels........ Personally I'd like to be able to watch all the films

because not every consumer wants every single film version. that's a very specific market with that product, and Disney is smart enough to know that the broadest possible market is the most profitable strategy.

also, there's work that would need to be done to get them to be Blu-ray...granted, I don't know what they did when they transferred them from Laser Disc to release to DVD, but it didn't turn out that great, in my opinion. So...effort would need to be taken to either clean up that transfer or try it again (since that's the only way the unaltered versions exist)

It's think it's fair to say they could release a successful box set of the Star Wars Saga with the originals and the special editions. Disney also has the money and the motive to make it happen. Maybe they will, who can say for sure.

"Noooo!" from RETURN OF THE JEDI, the changed Force Ghost of Anakin, Greedo shooting first, the girly-man scream from Luke as he falls on Cloud City, and the updated Sy Snootles routine are the only things I hate from the Special Editions.

Other than that, when the changes aren't interfering with character and/or plot, I actually like most of the updates made in them. Guess I'll have to do my own fan edit.

Empire is all I can really tolerate. Greedo shooting first dulls Han Solo's character, though I don't mind the layer effects for Mos Eisley. Jedi is the prime offender for me. The Jabba palace dance number ruins any sense of danger in Jabba's palace and makes it feel like a kid's birthday at chuck e cheese....

I agree with you on the Sy Snootles routine, which is weird because the music for the Ewok celebration at the end of ROTJ is better in the Special Edition IMO.

sounds awesome

I don't think they'd undo the prequels, but I'm sure they know it's best to leave it be and not bring up plot points or characters they don't have to (i.e. miticlorians or gungans)...and I hope they buy out the rights from 20th! I'd buy the shit out of that blu ray!

Strictly a rumor, 20th Century still retains rights for home video sales for all six current films. Unless Disney buys out the rights or the lapse which is around 2020, Disney can't release them as far as I know, as awesome as it would be to finally have the originals.

I wonder when Lucas kicks the bucket, if Disney will try a reboot prequels that retells the story of Anakin becoming Vader and are actually good. Anything is possible. Let's wait to see how Episode 7 turns out.

I think it's kind of interesting how franchises are ignoring some of their films within their respected series. For instance, from what I've been hearing Days of Future Past is ignoring X-Men: Origins Wolverine and The Last Stand, and now Star Wars might be separating the two trilogies.

Interesting stuff.

It's tough because as fans, it's so simple for us to dismiss the blunders, but I might feel ticked if I was Gavin Hood or Brett Ratner and my film gets shoved aside. Then again, for $150 million, they should have gotten it right the first time....

yep, because events between the the 60's to 70s stay unchanged until Wolvie arrives in the 70s where they try and change the future. By changing the future everything is reset. Here is another spoiler (once again read at your own perile)

at the end when Wolvie returns to the "present" 2020something, Scott and Jean are alive.

Otherwise, there would be no reason for Logan to join the X-Men in the first place, and don't forget he will forget everything eventually...
Lets just say that the most annoying parts of X3 and Wolverine Origins are erased.
