Rumor: Drew Goddard to write and direct The Spectacular Spider-man

03.02.2015

In another sign that Marvel and Sony are blending their universes both in front and behind the camera, sources have Drew Goddard named as both the writer and director of the upcoming reboot of the Spider-man films.  The source comes from Latino Review, so that means it has about a fifty/fifty chance of being true, but it sounds on the money considering the recent developments with Marvel properties.

You may recall that Goddard was slated to write and produce Marvel's DAREDEVIL series at Netflix.  While he helped write, he was replaced by Steven DeKnight when Goddard was named as the director on Sony's SINISTER SIX spin-off.  Now, with THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN franchise dead, Goddard can bridge the world of Sony and Marvel Studios with what is being tentatively called THE SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN.

The rumors also suggest that the condition for Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios to get involved was only if Avi Arad were to be removed from serving as producer on the project.  Aside from that, it looks like Sony is scrapping all of their proposed spin-offs and the new film will focus on Spider-man fighting the Sinister Six.  Here are some other details from the source.

No new origin story, Spidey exists from the beginning, taken as a given

New actor, probably an unknown, he will be specifically based in High School and they want him to be able to grow up into the role.  The thought being if this works, Spidey can do multiple trilogies for years ala Harry Potter.

A major part of the first film will involve Spider- Man fighting Iron Man and then trying to pass the “audition” to join the Avengers

The first film will involved the Sinister Six coming together with the thought to later maybe spin them off.

All of this sounds pretty legit, but we will have to wait and see.  Other sources claim the new Spider-man will no longer be Caucasian, but there is no word of that here.  In either case, I like that they would skip the origin completely but there is still that annoying trend of making it a trilogy before even the first film is written.  I guess there is no avoiding that in Hollywood these days.

Spider-man will make an appearance in CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR on May 6, 2016.  THE SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN is slated to hit theaters on July 28th, 2017.

The source is Latino Review, which means the story is probably fake. That being said, I think Goddard would be a great director for Spectacular Spider-Man. I hope this ends up being true, but I don't have my hopes up just yet.

tbh IF this all turns out to be true then the new Spider-Man will be an exciting film!

That said - considering the two weakest films of the previous five are the ones that have too much going on (Spider-Man 3 and The Amazing Spider-Man 2)... So having a film when Spider-Man is initially up against Iron Man and THEN has to take on 6 actual villains... Sounds like it could be messy.

Also not sold on the title. I was kinda hoping for SPIDER-MAN: SUBTITLE.

On the plus side - bringing Iron Man in would be a great way to sync the character with the MCU (especially assuming he'll be in Civil Way, maybe even a post-credits hint in Age of Ultron?)

With the rumours that Whedon won't be directing Infinity War (still hoping he'll becthe writer though) I was kinda fingers crossed that Marvel mind hand him Spider-Man's first MCU outing- but I'll be happy with Goddard!

My feelings are mixed really... It's an odd mix. Marvel have more than earned my trust with their 10films so far but Sony have disappointed ... Which way will this film go. Obviously I hope it'll be the best we've had.
I do hope they use Peter Parker though.

Well if this SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN doesn't work out we still have SENSATIONAL SPIDER-MAN and SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN as the next reboot. Oh, how about my favourite, PETER PARKER: SPIDER-MAN?

Why does anyone even read Latino Review anymore

They're reporting it like it's a done deal, but Goddard's reps are saying he hasn't yet met with Sony about the project. Granted, it appears both sides would be interested in making this happen, but by all accounts they haven't even negotiated let alone signed a contract.

Seriously, people, stop going to Latino Review. If you see a story by them pop up, go to a different entertainment news site to confirm. Stop giving them traffic, or they'll keep pulling crap like this, acting like they

This is EXACTLY what they said about The Amazing Spider-Man movies! Minus the marvel universe connection. Sony just keeps making the same mistakes again and again.

Thank God for no tiresome origin story & also for getting rid of that douchebag Arad, so happy Spider-Man is back in good hands.

I like everything they said and did not say here. In particular no mention of Miles Morales being Spider-Man yet. So it could still be Peter Parker which would make more sense with no origin story. Plus Spider-Man not fighting along side the Avengers against the Centauri makes sense if he is still in high school or if he did not pass his audition with Iron man thinking he is too young or not ready yet.

So apparently the rumor is that Dylan O' Brien has been cast as the new Spider Man....which is absolutely awesome.

If this is true I will be happy. He was my first choice. He has the potential to be the best at combining Spider-Man and Peter Parker into a whole character, instead of all the arguments over who was better between Maguire and Garfield with people usually saying Maguire was a better Peter, but Garfield a better Spider-Man.

I'm just glad to see Tim Tebow finding gainful employment working on comic book films.

Specifically based in high school

High School again. I can't wait for more scenes of Flash picking on Peter. Heck, I remember when Amazing Spider-man was announced and people asked why not just do Spiderman 4 with a new actor & director instead of a reboot, and the reason was because with the new series they wanted to be set all in high school. And that lasted just 1 film. I'll be curious to see how this new film distinguishes itself from the first 2 series, aside from cameo's from the Avengers.

Questions!

Sweet, but if he's in Civil War, presumably doing the same thing he did in the comics, why will he "fight" Iron Man (again?) after that? I would assume he'll be apart of the Avengers when that movie starts? Or he will at least show his value in that film. Maybe IM will be more of his trainer, which would be cool. But again, is he going to out his identity in cap 3? If the world knows Peter Parker is Spidey, than his movie is going to be a lot different than others. I'm cool most ways, and

I'm cool most ways, and just curious, but I'd he's outing himself in Cap 3, I'm cool with a full blown Spidey who's already mastered his skills for the most part and fought most of his gallery - which I don't think would be high school aged. It'll be a difficult balance. Hopefully he will be the "leader" for the "B Team" in A3 if those rumors are true. Solid choice in director. Looking forward to seeing how it plays out

And...do we know who all is in cap 3? Will Ant Man be? Will the Netflix characters be?

The known cast is Cap, IM, and Black Widow, right? The other ( probable) possibilities are Thor, Hulk, Falcon, Hawkeye, Quicksilver, Scarlett Witch, Voltron, Spidey, and I guess War Machine? Ant Man? ...Those are some pretty small teams.

"Is he going to out his identity in cap 3?"

No, probably not. One flaw with the Civil War story is that in real life you do have, for example, people working for the CIA whose identities are not publically known, precisely so that they and their family members can be protected. There was never any reason whatsoever for Spider-Man to come out publically.

I don't know how this will affect Avengers 3: the decision to break

I don't know how this will affect Avengers 3: the decision to break Infinity War into two movies was made before this deal was struck so the original treatment for Infinity War Parts 1 and 2 didn't involve Spider-Man at all. My guess is that Spider-Man will have a small role in Part 1 and a bigger role in Part 2.

The rumor is that Cap forms his own team after Age of Ultron. It is confirmed that Black Widow, the Black Panther and the Falcon will be in Captain America: Civil War so that could be Cap's team. Iron Man would recruit people for a new Avengers team consisting of himself, the Vision, Spider-Man and Captain Marvel. Thor, meanwhile, will go back to Asgard. What about the Hulk, War Machine, Hawkeye, the Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver? None of these characters are confirmed for Captain America: Civil War. We'll know more when we get an official cast list.

Not only would he be a 'spectacular' choice at directing spidey (sorry, i couldn't resist), Sony also owes him; he dropped out of showrunning 'Daredevil' and directing 'The Martian' for the canceled 'Sinister Six'. The man has the skills to knock this out the park, I hope the rumor is legit and they utilize him like they should.

All they need to introduce spidey is a post credits scene. That's it.

1. Why can't they hire someone with more directing experience this time?
2. It better be Peter Parker under that mask

First off, the whole unmasking of Spidey in Civil War makes zero sense. There are literally no secret identities in the MCU, so Spidey unmasking would have little to no effect. It just doesn't make much sense. Just because it happened in the books doesn't mean it should just appear on screen.

That being said, I'm all for a Drew Goddard helmed Spidey movie. The Sinister Six being the reason the Avengers (or another MCU character) appear in a Spidey film is a solid way of introducing the MCU

It made sense because he sided with Tony Stark and the pro-registration act. And the ultimate display of loyalty and burn the bridge was to unmask. if there are no secret identities than there is no point for the registration act if thats the plot they want

Well, the big players are all known in the MCU: Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor. But no one knows Bruce Banner is Hulk. I don't think anyone knows who Black Widow or Hawkeye are. When Ant-Man debuts I doubt anyone will know who he is. And you also need to think of the TV Shows, no one will know who Daredevil is. There is still enough mystery surrounding some of the heroes' secret identity for Spiderman unmasking to carry weight.

But here is the real issue. The Civil War story is

But here is the real issue. The Civil War story is within a Captain America movie. Meaning Cap is the main character. So how do you give Spiderman, who in the MCU is currently unheard of, enough screen time to establish this character in the MCU so his unmasking carries weight within the story.

I doubt the theme is unmasking heroes. Seems since SHIELD is done with it might be more along the lines of "who do The Avengers answer to?". Stark will seemingly side with the government, possibly setting up him becoming secretary of defense and Cap will not since he won't want shady governments to tell him who the villains are. Just my thoughts.

I think he meant it doesn't make sense in the MCU. If it was Garfield, it'd make more sense. But did Uncle Ben die a year ago and, now as a High School student he puts himself to the world? Than goes back to school?

I like all this. They need someone really young, which means no Logan Lerman. Also it doesnt matter if Spiderman is white, black, hispanic, or asian. Its not a factor in who the character is, so its not a factor in casting

One last thing, they should announce who spiderman is during "Civil War". Unmask spiderman as it applies to that story. Make people go to the theaters to find out who was cast (or wait to hear from someone whose seen it)

Who cares what race Peter parker is? Why does it matter, he's a fictional character whose race has nothing to do with his story. If he were hispanic, he would still be the awkward high school kid trying to ballance crime fighting with homework, nothing changes.

It matters because they were created the way they were intended. And I want to see black characters get their shot. I'd love to see characters like Static Shock and John Stewart's Lantern adapted instead of Hollywood saying they aren't worth a damn, let's take a guaranteed hit character and make him black. And lets not pretend they do it out of "best man for the job", they do it cause they are too lazy to put the work in

Peter Parker could be mixed race and still resemble the character in the comics. Hell, Aunt May could be any race because she isn't actually a blood relative of Peter Parker. (I bet nobody thought of that.)

If this is true, then that's a nice save for Goddard. Because honestly, it would have been a terrible move on Sony's part to have him sign onto something that was never going to see the light of day.

Also, I'm so glad Avi Arad will be nowhere near this thing. Gives me hope!

so, you'd rather have:
Spider-man
Spider-man 2
Spider-man 3
Spider-man
Spider-man 2
Spider-man
... ppl already know they are different movies, its just for clarity sake you call it something different, also because the comics had "the incredible / the spectacular / the amazing" you just didn't think it through, at all...
