Rumor: Dwayne Johnson to play John Stewart/Green Lantern for DC?

Jan. 3, 2014by: Jesse Giroux

Ready for the first BATMAN VS SUPERMAN rumor of the new year? Peter Georgiou from Think McFly Think tweeted yesterday that the rumor circulating behind-the-scenes is Dwayne Johnson might be playing John Stewart/Green Lantern for DC and Warner Bros. A few days ago Johnson tweeted that he had a meeting with the two companies, but nothing else was revealed. Although BATMAN VS SUPERMAN isn't mentioned in either tweet, if (and that's a huge if) Dwayne Johnson is up for Green Lantern, it's probably safe to assume it'll be for that upcoming movie, which is sounding more and more like a JUSTICE LEAGUE film, and not just Batman fighting Superman.

Ryan Reynolds' GREEN LANTERN might not have been a huge success, however more people are now aware of the character because of the movie. It would make sense to introduce a "new" Green Lantern in BATMAN VS SUPERMAN (if that's the plan), since the first film wasn't that well received, and we know Warner Bros. and DC are trying to build their own cinematic universe, so they could start from scratch with Green Lantern instead of trying to connect the last movie to their new film world. The other thing is even if Johnson isn't up for Green Lantern, it sounds like DC and Warner Bros. have had at least one conversation about another possible big screen adventure with the character.

But remember, this is only a rumor at this point, and a second-hand one at that. I think Dwayne Johnson would make a damn fine John Stewart, but I'm still hopeful the project he tweeted about is LOBO. He would totally own as the character.

Do you want to see Dwayne Johnson as Green Lantern, or should he play a different character for DC? Sound off below!

I think him being Darkseid/Doomsday is more plausible, given his stature.

Wow, I can easily think of a dozen comic book characters The Rock would be perfect for, but John Stewart isn't one of them. Horrible casting if true. But we all know this rumor is bullshit, and a plea for attention. Give John Stewart to Idris Elba.

This is obviously one of those "make up a rumor to drive internet traffic my direction" stories. Seriously, Dwayne Johnson is a massively huge guy with a larger than life physique, and if DC doesn't take advantage of that then they are fucking retarded. Casting Dwayne Johnson as an average Joe kind of character like Green Lantern would be a tragedy.

Agree 100%. Take advantage of what he has so it can be a franchise on it's own (assuming he has appearances in a JL movie)

I'm actually not bothered by the idea of going with John Stewart but the Rock doesn't look the part.

WB needs to bite the bullet and bring Reynolds back. What happens to everything that was established in the 2011 film like Oa, Guardians, Sinestro and the Corp? Reynolds works better in an ensemble anyway. As far as Johnson goes, paint him pink, put a fin on his head, give him a third eye and be done with it.

You Villain You

The Rock is known for turning around stagnant franchises, so the Green Lantern story makes sense, but that ain't it. How about a villain? Can you imagine what villain Mr. Johnson could play in the DC universe? There is where the answer lies.

If this rumor is true, it's funny that WB wants to be careful about introducing a new version of Green Lantern (John instead of Hal) so people who saw the Reynolds movie don't get confused, but there's been a Christian Bale Batman movie since GL came out and there's a totally new Bruce Wayne in this flick.

As Lobo yes. As GL... not so much!!

Im sorry but I think it would be a bad idea to cast him as GL/John Stewart. First.. his physic. He would have to slim down a good amount to physically fit the roll. Second... I love DJ but he was BORN to play LOBO! Lobo's sarcastic, evil, anti hero personal can be brought out PERFECTLY through DJ (his larger than life "The Rock" character from WWE is basically Lobo in a nutshell!). Third... another black actor would best portray JS/GL... Like, Morris Chestnut. He has the: perfect physic

But that's just my opinion though. I do agree however that they should have a way where Ryan Renolds/Hal Jordon, exchange mantle (not confuse non comic fans from the first movie). Maybe have HJ (Ryan Reynolds) go to another sector where he is desperately needed, thus the Earth sector needs a new guardian/GL. Just saying.

hrrmmmmm...

well, if he does become john stewart, they should at least bring back reynolds to reprise his role as hal, so they can explain why the mantle is being passed/shared, so its not confusing or creating a plot-hole within the DC cinematic universe's continuity.... that's all im sayin. but, if he's lobo instead, that'd be even awesomer.... regardless, i think he'd make a great john stewart as well, and a perfect green lantern replacement. but like i said, i dont think it could be fully accepted

@samuelmor (The Rock's ethnicity)

Just as an FYI, the Rock is bi-racial. His father is black (professional wrestler Rocky Johnson) and his mother is Samoan. I think what you are more trying to say is that his complexion does not match John Stewart's.

Wait...I'll go back and check but I thought that the last report said something WAS happening with the Rock and DC this year, as in there's a deal. That makes me believe it can't be for the Superman Batman movie bc it sounded like it would be starting later. Either this reporter didn't read that, or the other reporter assumed a lot. I think the Rock has the ability to help out about any (action) movie in any role, but I thing there's 4-5 ppl who he would be way better at playing. As much as

As much as I like him, that's really uninspired casting.
Also, if this is right and for the supes/bats film, then it clearly needs to just be called Justice League Origins, and I think the new DC animated movie is doing that story, but I hope they just do the new 52 issue 1 of Justice League. With that said, I would MUCH rather have Reynolds come back, and introduce Hal properly (in his own film...with Reynolds. That'd could be a good "buddy cop" duo). I'd rather him just play the newest GL - I think his name is Baz?

Oh, and in response to the author, it would make absolutely no sense at all to introduce a BRAND NEW GREEN LANTERN TO GENERAL AUDIENCES IN THE FUCKING OVERLOADED BATMAN SUPERMAN FILM. People aren't going to wonder about the transition and what happened to Reynolds? Bc they clearly just didn't recast him with The Rock. Ppl won't understand and that needs to be explained, really more than any other major Justice League character. Hell, I'm a pretty big comic fan, having dropped about $300 on

Hell, I'm a pretty big comic fan, having dropped about $300 on comics the past month, and I don't even know much of anything about Stewart. Really the only articles that are written well and have reasonable thoughts (or can make a reasonable argument) are the non news writers - ink & pixel, unpopular opinion, even the box office reports. I bet half the people will walk away from this thinking he's gonna be in the Bats Supes movie bc they read it on this news article. It's fine to report on new casting rumors, but when you are making your own assumptions, but those at the bottom and write "Will he play GL in the new Supes Bats movie? Or in a solo film? What do you guys think?" Don't place your completely random and unfounded belief that he'll be in the Sup Bats movie as this RUMORED character in the middle of a journalistic news story, that's irresponsible. I don't get if. Did you all do well in English and take journalism classes in college and write for ANY papers? As much, or more, blame goes to the editor, if there is one. Joblo and AICN need to get ppl who can write news articles journalistacally, now just film fans who know a lot of geek trivia and have good ideas and opinions on films. Is criteria actually involved?

That's such a waste to have one of the biggest physical specimen around to play a Lantern (who isn't Killowog) and not a tank/strength based character. It'd be like having Batista play Peter Quill instead of Drax.

I was wondering just this morning which super hero/villain The Rock would end up playing...

Because everyone has to be a Superhero/Villain these days.

Personaly think this would be a waste.

It was my understanding that Reynolds signed a multi picture deal before filming The Green Lantern and I had heard that it was supposed to tie into DC/WB perspective universe and Justice League. Now whether any of that is actually true or if it was just wishful thinking by fans I'm not sure but I do believe that it would best suite the studio to use their already established character of Hal Jordan and have him pass the torch possibly soon after to Stewart. Then they don't have to worry about

Then they don't have to worry about attempting to build the Lantern mythology from the ground up just simply build upon (or repair, depending on your outlook) what they have. And that allows you to more easily explain why you have the same actor playing Sinestro down the road and you don't have to show his descent either because it is already packaged all nice and neat for a future film.

I can't quite see it, but I guess there are worse choices out there and John Stewart is a Marine so he needs to have that bulk. But I really think someone like Derek Luke might work better. Heck, even Common, who was cast in George Miller's Justice League movie that didn't come to fruition.

cause this guy never got his own franchise, its easy to be "successful" that way! He is the guy who always shows in somebody else movie. Anyway, you still think hes great, Im still waiting to see him doing his own movie.

Why??!

Galactus has it right. But, everyone needs to stop hating on Ryan Reynolds. He was pretty great as Green Lantern in 2011. There were some issues with the script, but it was a good first movie to introduce the character to the mainstream public. And to even talk about casting The Rock as the Green Lantern is completely ridiculous. He does not suit the character and to hit on another discrepancy... John Stewart is black. The Rock is not. I wish they had done the sequel to the 2001 movie as they

I don't want to see him as John Stewart. I just don't think he has the right appearance for the character and I think he could do bigger things within the DC Universe than playing Green Lantern.

I think everyone on this site already knows how much I love Green Lantern and because of that I would rather see DC actually connect the first Green Lantern film with its upcoming DC films just so that there's already the established continuity and so that they don't have to start over again with

I really agree. In the least do a Hulk/Incredible Hulk thing to address and change the flaws (I am a fan of the first, despite how very stupid it is at times - idk why, but I know there are quite a few things to be fixed), but in this case I'm fine with keeping the same cast. And at the moment lean towards keeping it then changing it but I can't think of other actors at the moment. Use that quasi sequel to have more DCU stuff, and then kill off Hal, introduce Stewart, have a little special

I agree with everything except killing Hal off. But to re-introduce the character and his origins like the Incredible Hulk did in that film is a good idea and would be a great way to update the general audience again.

Been waiting for an opportunity to say this for a while now.

Ving Rhames should play John Stewart If they decide to use him. He's perfect. I'd rather not see Dwayne Johnson play anyone but If they are going to use him he should be a big and imposing character (like the Thing although I don't know what the DC equivalent would be). If they do cast him as John Stewart I officially hate whoever is doing the casting for DC.
