Rumor: Han Solo movie being pushed back to December 2018

When all is said and done, ROGUE ONE will be the highest-grossing movie released in 2016 (domestically at least), as it nears the current title holder, FINDING DORY. This should come as no shock to STAR WARS die-hards, but the first spinoff had some in the industry curious about its potential success, which seems silly now. The WARS brand has won out, and clearly the December release schedule is working wonders for it, so much so we could see a shift in a future film's release.

According to a source at Making Star Wars, the release date for the upcoming HAN SOLO movie will shift from its current May 25, 2018 release slot and move to December 13 (a Thursday, meaning officially on December 14) later that year.  The film from Phil Lord and Christopher Miller would be moving into less crowded territory, with the only movie slated for then being the Peter Jackson-produced MORTAL ENGINES, and would solidify Disney’s dominance of the month.

Granted, as the headline implies, this is just a rumor at this point, but a shift like this would make more sense than releasing the movie in May like it’s currently slated to. Summer 2018, like every summer, will be jammed-packed with potential hits, including the new AVENGERS movie earlier in May, so Disney encroaching on the success of its own movie seems counter-intuitive. In addition, FORCE AWAKENS and ROGUE have dominated the box office thanks to lesser competition going into January and the holiday season meaning kids and families can go again and again, along with the fanboys.

To reiterate, this is merely a rumor at this point, but it's something that can be easily confirmed or denied quite soon, and is worth keeping an eye out for. Frankly I think it would be a smart move, given the aforementioned reasons. EPISODE VIII comes out this December, and it seems like too soon to release another WARS movie only five months later. This gives the release more room to breathe and the movie more time to be worked on. Plus it will mean December is officially STAR WARS month, meaning you can plan your lies to your family about why you can’t come home for Christmas accordingly.

The HAN SOLO movie is currently slated for May 25, 2018 with Alden Ehrenreich, Donald Glover and Emilia Clarke.

I had already assumed this would be December release... Didn't even notice the tentative Summer 2018 date...

I'm fine with this. Just keep the quality high and keep pumping them out year by year.

I would be surprised if anyone was surprised.
As others have said, they have a steady timetable that works now. A year of hype then a movie at Christmas.

Why break what has been working?

2 years now we got December Star Wars and 2 years they have been the highest grossing films of the year. I say keep them coming in December. With Ep 8 coming THIS WINTER it only makes sense to have Han Solo come a later later, and not 5 months later. We are getting into SW overload, but one a year (equally apart) should help ease that.

I been saying you awhile that i wanted to see a Star Wars movie not based on any set character, such as the Skywalkers. Rogue One is a step in the right direction. So I hope I dont sound like a jerk for saying that I'm not interested in a Han Solo origin story. I like not knowing his history. Time for a star wars story from a different era all together. If this turns out good then great but I'm not optimistic about this project.

I thought 2018 was when Star Wars Episode VIII was supposed to come out. It's 3 years from The Force Awakens, which is traditional for the trilogies.

Traditional Lucas maybe. Ep 8 comes out at the end of this year.

Avatar 2 -

I've actually been waiting for Disney to do this. Makes more financial sense to keep it as an Xmas holiday release as it can cruise into January without michbin the way if competition. With that said, I wonder if Fox will keep Avatar 2 as a Dec 21st opening and play a game of chicken with SW, or if it'll move to a less crowded month like March? I know Cameron is hoping to have Autostereoscopic 3D ready for A2'd release. If he does, I could see that movie making more than it has any reason to if

With Disney in a partnership with Avatar at Disney World, I'm curious to see how this will play out.

Too bad the film sounds so uninteresting at this point. They're so many other directions with so many other characters in the Star Wars Universe they could have gone with instead of doing Han Solo: Origins.
