True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto clears the air on season 2

06.12.2014

The biggest word on the street in regards to True Detective: Season 2 is that it would feature primarily a cast of female detectives. That's no problemo, as each season is designed to be self contained. The earliest casting rumor came in the form of Jessica Chastain, which was shot down about as fast as it popped up. Other names have come up since, like Brad Pitt, but now series creator Nic Pizzolatto has a few things to say about casting that pretty much brings us back to square one. He also has some news that may disappoint fans looking for a long-running show.

In regards to the casting rumors that have appeared thus far:

Literally, not a single rumor about casting that has been printed anywhere has any truth to it whatsoever. I mean that literally. Iíve seen entertainment reporters say ĎMy sources say . . . Ď There are no sources. Thereís me and two other guys and they donít even know what Iím doing.

On whether or not anyone has been cast:

No! Iíve talked to one person about it, possibly, and that has been it. We havenít cast anybody. I have a secret list and thatís it.

In regards to whether or not the primary cast will be female:

Again, itís a rumor with no basis in fact. There is a strong female character. But I wouldnít say it is female-led or anything like that.

In regards to how long True Detective may last:

Every season, Iím essentially creating a brand new TV show. It canít have any growing pains like a regular first season. If it works it has to work right out of the box. Thatís incredibly exhausting. I mean, the job is exhausting to begin with, but itís doubly exhausting and Iím writing every episode. I canít imagine I would do this more than three years. I mean, Iíd like to have a regular TV show. Weíll have some fixed sets, regular actors and I could bring in people to help and I doní t have to be there every second. Itíd be great.

It's nice to get some official news on the topic from the man himself, so we could put those other rumors to bed. Having recently watched the first season, I couldn't be more excited for two more years of Pizzolatto's writing. Given that he writes each episode (and the first season had the same director all throughout), I can see how it would be an exhausting process. The great aspect about the show is that each season will be self-contained, so viewers won't feel like they're missing out on anything if he does decide to call it quits after three seasons.

If they keep in line with the schedule from season one, we should expect True Detective: Season 2 to start airing on HBO in early 2015.

I feel like this would be the perfect show to have seasons that follow Sherlock's release formula of "whenever the fuck we want"

If they do go with female leads, I'd like to see Jessica Chastain be one of them. She proved in Zero Dark Thirty that she can be a strong minded, take no bull shit woman.

This man must be great at playing poker.

And I mean that in all due respect to the man. He's just exhausted and pissed, he's probably sick of all the hubbub and just wants to write, cause lets keep it real here. This guy is just a writer, that's all he wants to do is write. In the late summer of 2012 Matt and Woody were cast in TD. It was shot from January to June 2013. I'm sure if they are shooting for a summer 2015 run of TD season 2 that it's closer to coming together than what he's saying. All this guy wants to do is write, not

I know. But tell me if the writing, directing, acting, and stories were on par with the first season you wouldn't want this show to last just a little longer?

Completely. But it's just HIM! Just Nic alone writing and creating everything out if fucking nothing. It's going to take a toll on him. I'd rather him write Three great seasons and move in to other projects than wrote five amazing mind-blowing seasons and running himself thin and being burnt out and who knows what he might do after, we have going actors talking about retiring from acting because their burnt out. I don't want a writer to be burnt out.

I agree wholeheartedly as a writer myself. I can only imagine or rather I can't possibly fathom putting all you're ideas into one show all by yourself. I just wish he had a team of great writers that can all just sit down, brain storm and work out the kinks. So that it would be less of a toll on him.

We just watched this over this past weekend, what an amazing achievement it is. Truly spectacular. It's worth at least one viewing. When Rust said " I saw him back in 95, but his face was dirty" my heart sank for the guy. Not sure if I've ever been so emotionally attached to a TV show, and it was only 8 episodes. Big, massive overwhelming props to all involved but especially Harrelson & McConaughey.

Pitt and Norton would be pretty awesome. But he kinda squashes that as he says everything

Out of all of the suggestions for two new male detectives, my favorites were Brad Pitt and Ed Norton. Would love to see the two of them collaborate again on something like this.
