Rumor: The reason why Obi-Wan hasn't had his own Star Wars spinoff yet

11.28.2016

Obi-Wan Kenobi Ewan McGregor Alec Guinness Star Wars

Potential spoilers lay ahead, consider this your warning. Disney has plans to release a STAR WARS spinoff, beginning with ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY, every other year, but aside from ROGUE ONE and the UNTITLED HAN SOLO STAR WARS ANTHOLOGY FILM, we don't really have a lot of concrete information about what they have planned for the future. STAR WARS fans have been vocal about which characters/stories they'd like to see get the spinoff treatment and one of the most requested has been a spinoff (or two) dealing with Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Ewan McGregor has expressed his interest in returning to the role several times in the past few years, but Lucasfilm has kept silent about whether or not they would also like to see the further adventures of Obi-Wan Kenobi. Entertainment Weekly’s Anthony Breznican recently appeared on the Rebel Force Radio podcast (via Star Wars News Net) and when the discussion shifted towards Disney/Lucasfilm's STAR WARS spinoffs, Breznican commented on the ever present rumours surrounding an Obi-Wan film.

Um, I have heard rumors that the one reason they haven’t moved sooner on Obi-Wan is that they’re not done with Obi-Wan quite yet in the Saga films. So I wouldn’t be surprised to see an Obi-Wan thing happen beyond Episode IX.

It's important to take this with a grain of salt (or two), but Anthony Breznican says that he would be very surprised if Obi-Wan wasn't referenced in some way in either STAR WARS: EPISODE VIII or STAR WARS: EPISODE IX. Ewan McGregor has already made a very small vocal cameo as Obi-Wan in STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS, so it's not entirely out of the realm of possibility that they have further plans for the character in the upcoming saga films.

I think that they’ll probably be some reference to Obi-Wan in the Saga films, and his connection to whatever characters he happens to have a connection with. I’ve already written that I think that Rey has some kind of connection to him – family connection. So if that’s the case, maybe we see a part of that play out in the future Obi-Wan movie. Ewan McGregor would be the perfect age to reprise that [character].

ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY is set for a December 16, 2016 release.

Ewan's Obi-wan was the best part of the prequels as a whole (he wasn't much in Phantom Menace, but by the time Attack of the Clones came he had fully inhabited the role).

That said, I kind of see the prequels double as Obi-wan's origin into the man we meet in A New Hope. It's strongly hinted that he settles on Tatooine after dropping baby Luke off. And I never really imagined much happened in between.

Still amazed that Obi Wan was wearing the same cloth for more than 20 or 30 years. Also that he hid on Tatooine in a Jedi-Robe...

No thanks

Fuck McGregor he's had little respect for the Star Wars universe and fans in the past and now work is drying up for him he's interested in returning. Didn't like him as much as people say in the trilogy - personally I thought Neeson was a far better Jedi and Maul as the highlight of episode 1, 2&3 you might as well ignore for lack of anything decent aside from his saver duel with Anakin. Don't know what the obsession with seeing more Obi-wan is - personally I'd rather see a bounty hunter spin

Work is drying up for him? Just because you don't like the man doesn't mean he's not doing very well for himself lately.

On a side note, while I'm not huge on origin movies for these characters, Yoda would be an interesting one to tackle.

@Optimusbobs,

Seriously? He has had some great roles since the prequels, and he is a great actor. Examples? I have many, in no particular order:

He's in the upcoming Fargo season of TV
The Impossible
The Island
Deception
Jack The Giant-Slayer
Jane Got A Gun
T2: Trainspotting
Beauty and The Beast

All of these came out AFTER the prequels and are maybe 1/3 of his work done. He is still in demand and still getting parts he wants. He has never been a Tom Cruise, which makes him

@coldsun1187

Clearly you missed the point, and like a lot of people on this site don't understand the point of a debate or respect other people's views. Personally I think McGregor is not a great actor - his interpretation of ObiWan was influenced by a great actor who appeared in the prequels before him and aside from this - my question was MAJOR FILM, most of your entries wouldn't be deemed either major, recent or in some cases even headlining the film?? Perhaps take some time out next time

It's pretty funny to see you preach a big pile of bullshit and then tell someone else they look foolish. Saying his work is "drying up" implies he's not working at all despite your attempt to cover it up by adding the work major later on. You were proven wrong and embarrassingly so. No he's not "headlining" any "major films" (I guess the definition of major is relative to you and your "debate" huh?), like say the trash that is the DC movies, that means he's a failure I guess. Ever stop to think

Ever stop to think that he's dying to make an Obiwan story because Disney is actually taking the property seriously? And furthermore, you clearly have no clue about the potential stories for the character between 3&4. Now go get angry, grab your Mountain Dew, lock the basement door, and attempt to discredit or insult me, can't wait for your bullshit rant!

Yes Please Bring Ewan Back!

The guy is such an underrated actor and deserves more time as Obi-Wan.

Say what you will about the prequels, but Ewan's Obi-wan is why I enjoy elemenst of the prequels. I would LOVE to see him do more Obi-wan. I'm kinda hoping he'll be in Ep8, even if briefly.

What about Hayden Christensen and "From my point of view the Jedi are evil!" That's real acting and explanatory drama.
