Rumor: The Terminator reboot/sequel may be dropping the Genesis subtitle

06.30.2014

With the film already in production under the title TERMINATOR: GENESIS, Alan Taylor's movie may be dropping the subtitle in favor of the much simpler and more direct name TERMINATOR. Bleeding Cool has cited several merchandising sources that have indicated that toys and other tie-in material for the new film are being assembled with the title TERMINATOR and no GENESIS.

Before we consider this more than just a marketing decision, it would seem to be a more fitting title of what is being theorized as the start of a new trilogy. Some intel regarding the screenplay have the movie venturing back to the original James Cameron film and taking the timeline in a different direction. This approach worked for J.J. Abrams' STAR TREK and the TERMINATOR franchise has been built on time travel conceits, so this could be very plausible.

Or, it could just be a marketing tool and that is it. Using the broader title of TERMINATOR would mean anything manufactured for TERMINATOR: GENESIS could also include items from the preceding four films in the franchise without worrying about title. With TERMINATOR: GENESIS a major movie thanks to the return of Arnold Schwarzenegger, I would expect to know more after the upcoming San Diego Comic Con.

TERMINATOR: GENESIS is slated for release on July 1, 2015.

I saw some Transformers toys today. They did not say Transformers: Age of Extinction but just Transformers. Maybe the next Transformers movie will be "Transformers" without a subtitle. Or perhaps I am reading too much into this.

wah-wah-wah, sheesh. I'm just giving this a thumbs up because I'm so tired with people trashing reboots/ remakes of 20+ year old properties. You are getting old too, deal.

Heh.
'Terminator: Reboot' actually makes sense as an optional title.

Wasn't salvation supposed to be the start of the new trilogy? Is this movie even taking into account Rise of the Machines and Salvation, or is it a straight reboot? Man I wish they would finish a series before rebooting. I guess we'll never get a film that focuses on the future war like the scenes from T1&2, which is sad b/c that's all I want from this franchise at this point.

Now it sounds like a remake. Which it seems what they are trying to do by erasing the existence of Terminator 1 & 2 and those other ones.

Was the "genesis" dropped to cater to potential Christian consumers? I do not know. But, people could take possible offense to the word's use.
Also, Terminator is a simpler title. Sometimes, studios sell potential movie-goers' intelligence short. Paramount might assume that too few people know that "genesis" means "a beginning". Therefore, the studio demands a more accessible title. Again, I speculate.
By any title, this film has my mild interest. Genesis could be the Terminator franchise's

By any title, this film has my mild interest. Genesis could be the Terminator franchise's revival after two mediocre chapters.

Title doesn't affect movies plot, so hype won't change.

This could be called Terminator: Shitstorm and people wouldn't care. It sounds interesting and could be cool if they do that back to the future thing.

I dunno man. I think Terminator: Shitstorm would stand a far higher likliehood of getting my ass in a seat opening night.

I saw this coming.

The film's original press release referred to it as TERMINATOR, and the poster from a recent expo also featured the same title. This doesn't bother me too much, and it's not the first time a franchise has done this (Final Destination 5 or whatever it was eventually became The Final Destination, The Fast and the Furious 4 became Fast & Furious, etc.).
