Rumor: Warner Bros may be pursuing Chris Pine for the Green Lantern reboot

03.10.2015

With Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot, Ben Affleck, Jason Momoa, Ray Fisher, Dwayne Johnson, Ezra Miller, and the all-star cast of SUICIDE SQUAD in place, the only two uncast heroes for announced DC Cinematic projects are Shazam and Green Lantern. Since Ryan Reynolds is definitely not reprising his role, the reboot/sequel to GREEN LANTERN will need a new leading man.

While we are five years away from the announced release of GREEN LANTERN, I would expect Warner Bros would want their new hero set to debut in JUSTICE LEAGUE: PART ONE on November 17, 2017. Latino Review shared the rumored contender which they clearly say is unsubstantiated at this point.

HOT RUMOR! #GREENLANTERN UPDATE! The name I keep hearing & floating around, is Chris Pine for Hal Jordan. Yes, Captain Kirk. Again, this is still just a RUMOR hence UNCONFIRMED. Been hunting this one for a while so the search is still ongoing. How do you guys feel about it, IF again a big IF, it is indeed true? #HalJordan #JUSTICELEAGUE #DC #DCCU #batmanvsuperman #Warners

A photo posted by Umberto Gonzalez (@umbertogonzalez) on

Pine has already successfully starred in one franchise reboot (STAR TREK) and killed another (JACK RYAN: SHADOW RECRUIT). As an actor he has yet to show that he can headline a franchise on his own but he does have the charisma and look to pull off a superhero, especially one as cocky as Hal Jordan. Whether such a role would even be possible with his other commitments to STAR TREK, it does sound like a good choice. But, we don't even know at this point if GREEN LANTERN will be a recast sequel to the Ryan Reynold's film or if it will even be Hal Jordan as the main character. Hopefully we learn more soon.

The reboot of GREEN LANTERN is slated for release on June 19, 2020.

Bring it on!

Pine as Hal would be a best case scenario for the DCCU. Hal is needed on the new JLA team to balance out the overly serious other characters, and Pine would be a great Hal. Just do it DCCU!

I really like Pine as Jordan, I definitely think he can pull off the role. I still want to see J. Stewart at some point. I think it would be really smart if they used Stewart in the JL movies, and Jordan in the stand alone movies. At some point they can have Stewart team up with Jordan in a Green Lantern event movie as well.

John Stewart

Why rehash the same version of this character? Let Common play the John Stewart version.

Stewart works in a team setting, but the character is boring on his own. To most fans, Hal IS the Green Lantern. I would like to see a movie starring all 4 lanterns though (Jordan, Sterwart, Rayner and Gardner).

ya kinda safe

but i think he'd be a better as a bad guy after seeing stretch and HB2, and he was good in both. Great in the first. His humor is less cocky "annoying" banter in those films and much more... mischievous and dark, disturbing. Neither of these are great choices, but what about his co-star from those films? Patrick Wilson (but yeah I know he's too old). Or, I always get him confused with Ed Helms, the guy from SNL who plays the sex-hound in horrible bosses. I know, it's a streeeeeetch, but

This is weird. Just last week I was like, "fuckin' Chris Pine should be Green Lantern". Here's my post: So what do you guys think about Chris Pine? His career didn't seem to take off after Star Trek, did it? I feel like I've come around on him, he's funny. I think he needs his own FX series or superhero property. He could have been a terrific Green Lantern. At least 12 times better than Ryan Reynolds. Not that I have anything against Reynolds. Maybe his own Cinemax show."

Do it, Chris Pine!

I like him as Kirk, but the choice almost seems a little too.... safe play maybe? They have kind of been taking this road of shocking people with their superhero choices in one way or another since the JL plan was announced. I would have thought that the John Stewart road might have been a little more fitting.

Chris Pine was actually my original choice for a young Hal Jordan. Hearing this today makes me smile if even just for a little bit. Who knows if these rumors have any substance to them, or even if he would accept the role if offered. Either way for a little while I can be happy.

I don't care how well they might do it....

You've got people whining about diversity to the point where they're talking about (or have already) changed character races, but here's a character where the COOLEST ITERATION was John Stewart, a black bad-assed marine. Instead they want to recycle Hal Jordan after a failed movie with another good but overexposed actor?

That would be stupid.

I concur. Neil Adams, Stewart's co-creator, said that part of the reason GL failed(out of so many) was that unless you've read the comics John is THE Green Lantern, due to his prominent role on the JL/JLU animated series. From that perspective it would seem like the character was white-washed.

Stewart as a character is one of the most boring characters ever put into a comic. It's not about race, but about how the guy is wayyyyy too serious and way too by the book. Yeah, let's put in the guy who blew up a whole planet.

He'd be an okay back-up player later on, but you would lose too many GL stories, villains, and characters without Hal who has been the main GL for 60 years. Hal all the way.

I have wanted Chris Pine for a number of comic book characters. I thought he would of made a good Captain America, then I thought he or Neal Patrick Harris would be good for the Flash. Now I would take him as Hal Jordan no problem. And I actually liked his Jack Ryan movie and was hoping we would see him continue in the role.

I'm on board for One of he gets the role. ST3 (which is struggling to even get made) is likely the last in that series. He'll be free for GL.

This would be perfect casting in my opinion. The guy has the right chops, look, and attitude to make for a great Hal Jordan/Green Lantern and we know he can handle a franchise of this size and caliber based off of his experience with Star Trek.

I hope this turns out to be true and that he ends up being Green Lantern. It would make up for the shitty casting of Flash with Ezra Miller.

But I'm rooting for Pine, Jake Gyllenhaal, or Gabriel Macht at this point.

Outside of Harrison Ford, has there been an actor who could successfully headline 2 franchises? They try it a lot (Bale with Batman and Terminator, RDJ with Iron man and Sherlock, Pine with Star Trek and Jack Ryan). I guess there's Stallone with Rocky and Rambo, but for the most part I'm fine with an actor having just one franchise to lead. Spread the love, there's a lot of other talented actors out there.

Chris Pine may be perfect for Hal Jordan. Is Hal Jordan perfect for Chris Pine? I try not to judge too harshly when it comes to actors taking on super-hero roles, since the genre's got a certain amount of legitimacy now. But Pine has been making some pretty interesting choices just in the past year. When you consider the commitment involved in being in a super-hero movie, it could tie him up for a while. Meanwhile, I think a case could be made for him to become a more subversive pretty boy a la

When Chris Pine teams with Joe Carnahan, he creates characters that are fucking amazing! (Stretch and Smokin Aces). I am a fan of Pine.. BUT i think Warners needs to court a no name actor for this role, it is too big a risk for an established name... it ruined Reynolds career for a number of years, Pines manager should advise against the role

I like Pine, but I feel like Hal Jordan is way too close to his take on Captain Kirk. I want to see him stretch as an actor instead of type casting.
I'm not sure why DC isn't going with John Stewart. They want to be diverse and John is the most familiar GL to the animated universe fans anyway.
