Rumor: Who does Marvel want for Doctor Strange?

Jul. 15, 2013by: Niki Stephens

According to Latino Review, a trusted source is saying that Marvel Studios has been discussing Joseph Gordon-Levitt for the role of DOCTOR STRANGE.

Of course take this with a grain of salt. Latino Review labels it as much, and even goes as far to say that there's no offer, discussions, nor any knowledge of the idea on behalf of Gordon-Levitt's camp. It said that the script from Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer the role is written for someone in their 30s. Gordon-Levitt turned 32 in February. Obviously they want him for more than the fact that he's in the age range. However, this does mean that he would be playing two heroes if any further action is taken with his character in the Batman universe. Not that this has been a problem before.

As much as I love Gordon-Levitt, I don't see him as a fit for Strange. I was hoping that they would definitely go with someone at least in their 40s but if they do want to make this into something as big as IRON MAN then they may be wanting someone a little younger. The part has been linked to several actors thus far like Justin Theroux, Patrick Dempsey, Viggo Mortensen, and Benedict Cumberbatch.

I'm sure in the next couple of weeks someone else will be rumored for the role...

hey i have a Idea, lets stop thinking that JGL is having some further involvement in a future Batman film. why are poeple hanging on to the thought of him being in a future bat film when its been stated that the next bat installment is going to be another reboot. With that said - im not sure how i feel about him playing Dr Strange, maybe in my head i pictured someone who looks alittle older. just have to wait and see how this plays out

JGL wouldn't be a bad Doctor Strange. I'm sure he can handle it. Personally I'd go with Benedict Cumberbatch.

Dr. Strange always came off like an older dude, but if its an origin story, I'm not surprised by the age.

Viggo Farking Mortensen

Marvel, knock knock, hello! Viggo Mortensen, people! If you want someone to replace Rob Downey as the top guy, get someone with similar maturity and screen presence. Salary too high? How about Anson Mount? I love JGL as an actor but he's just too damn boyish for someone like Strange.

Looks too young

JGL has the potential to do something within the Marvel Universe. However, he is no Dr. Strange and he is not the face of a new franchise that takes the Iron Man mantle. Viggo Mortenson still is my top pick.

Great actor, wrong role...

Casting for Strange will be extremely important for the characters addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I agree that it should be someone older (40's). As much as I love Sherlock I just don't see Cumberbatch as Strange. Viggo would be great but its a stretch and Dempsey just does not have the star power needed for the role... Should be an interesting few months to see how which way they go.

this is a long-term role

whoever plays Dr. Strange will be playing him for the next decade. Tony Stark (the previous Marvel-hub) will have been going at it for 7 years by the time Avengers 2 comes out. you can def see the aging in RDJ's face in between IM1 and IM3. i bet this is a factor in looking at JGL (who can play anywhere from late 20's to late 30's).

Ehh, I would rather not see JGL as Dr. Strange. I just can't picture him in the role at all. Viggo Mortenson and Benedict Cumberbatch would be far better choices for this role than JGL. And nothing against the guy, just not a great fit for the role.

Even though I think he kinda sucks, Dempsey does look the part at least. Viggo or Theroux could kill it on acting chops alone.

Also, no I can't see JGL in the role

Inspired Choice

As a long time reader of the good Dr. & as many actor's that I've run through my fanboy head as to who could play him in a film...the underrated Justin Theroux never once occurred to me (nor did I catch any stories in the past linking him to the part) & now, to me @ least, he's sounds like the perfect dude for it.

I hope Levitt continues much like DiCaprio. Working w/ great writers / directors & mixing big budgets (Looper, Inception) w/ low-key drama's, comedies, thillers (Brick, Hesher, Don

My Never-Going-To-Happen Pick is...

Ed Norton! He's not Hulk anymore and he was the only good thing about The Illusionist.
I like JGL, but he's too young for the part.

...but he looks too much like JGL for this role. Needs a stronger jaw. I really dig the suggestions for Patrick Wilson, Nikolaj Coster Waldau, AND Richard Armitage below. Props to those mentioning them. And I'm still game for Viggo (!) and Theroux.

I love JGL. I think he's a pretty fantastic actor and is extremely enjoyable to watch. However, I just cannot see this happening. I can see some logic behind Marvel's campaign to get him to sign in that he's recognizable. Plus, Doctor Strange isn't acclimated to the general audiences that are being introduced to the MCU. It makes sense for the studio execs to try to reel him in so as to establish a better connection with the general movie-going audience and a not-so-well-known character.

Based on looks and panache, I pictured someone like Clive Owen or Viggo Mortensen to fill in for the role of the good doctor. I think they'd bring a level of excitement and credibility to the role. Hell, Johnny Depp would be a good fit if only POTC were over and Alice in Wonderland wasn't being greenlit. Benedict Cumberbatch would be fucking awesome to watch as he dominates pretty much ever role he's in. But, if they want someone in their thirties, I say throw a line out to Justin Theroux (41 but he looks like he's still in his mid 30s).
I know Marvel is keeping their cards close to the chest on setting up Phase 3 and I highly doubt that they would screw this up especially if the curtain is starting to close on RDJ.

Not keen on the idea. Just wondering if, this did happen, how much of sticking it to WB would have played a part in the decision? Such a move would surely be the equivalent of this scene - [link] with Marvel f-ing in the face of WB's. Alas, I doubt WB have it in them to replicate the comeback moment of this scene.

I understand that Marvel would want Doctor Strange to be 30 in maybe sell more tickets to a younger audience that they feel would better connect with the character....yet I think Doc Strange needs to be at least 40 ish and I think Viggo Mortensen
would be ideal...someone who could look and act the part...JGL is a great actor...but he is too young and not the right build....you need a taller, stronger, tough guy to play the part.

Well...

If they are looking for someone older, with the acting chops, quick-witted , charming and could hold their own as a Marvel leader... Why not Tom Cruise. Last time he and RDJ were together in a film they were equally dynamic. Plus a superhero film is something Tom hasn't done in his three decade stint.

The main reason I'm hip to this new is I'm just excited that they are making a Doctor Strange movie. Much like everyone else here I was expecting older for the casting but if they are going this route (does make sense) then JGL is a pretty solid choice, he's one of the best from his generation and is good at becoming the role and not just being himself in films, so I approve of this choice. Another name if they are going for younger that I would like to toss out there is James Franco, he can do

He's a great actor, but I was picturing someone older for Doctor Strange. Levitt seems too young for the role or too clean cut.

Cumberbatch, Viggo, or Dempsey would be good choices for Doctor Strange and in that order as well.

This choice hasn't been mentioned yet, due to obvious reasons, but how bout HUGH JACKMAN? He's already dabbled a bit in magic with The Prestige. He has the look, the acting chops and definitely the charm to capture the audience. Plus the role wouldn't require him to be in top notch physical form like Wolverine does. I know it will never happen but I think it's an interesting choice. I really can't think of anyone else .

Hello?! Vin Diesel has been meeting with Marvel. Who ELSE is he going to play other than Dr. Strange? I'm having a hard time why no one else is seeing this very obvious ploy of using JGL as a distraction from the real deal.

Id say Jeff Goldblum from the 90's would be a perfect choice to play the Doc. (as in the greased up shirtless Goldblum from Jurassic Park) but now he might be alittle too old for what they are shooting for. I also don't think he holds the star power anymore for them to even consider him. That's not a knock on Jeff at all, its just that he hasn't really been in the public's eye recently.
