Rumor: Will Obi-Wan return for Star Wars: Episode VII?

Aug. 16, 2013by: Niki Stephens

Rumor has it that in STAR WARS: EPISODE VII: FORCE GHOST that Obi-Wan Kenobi will make his return.

Okay, I know it's not called FORCE GHOST but with all these rumors I feel like were just going to have a bunch of dead Jedis and Siths on our hands. To be fair, we don't have a ton of concrete news on the next installment either. Latino Review is reporting that after they delivered the news on Emperor Palpatine that they have the inside scoop that Obi-Wan will possibly return as a force ghost.

Ewan McGregor is always happy to find his way back to the force whether he's a ghost or not. I think it would be great to have him back in any capacity because his character is that voice of reason, and he's just a damn good Obi-Wan.

In a trio of sequels plagued by wooden (or downright terrible) acting, Ewan McGregor's "You were supposed to be the chosen one" scene was the only one that managed to move me emotionally.

I just hope and pray there is a way to bring back Jar Jar. Maybe lot of Jar Jar clones and stuff. Like a full two hour of Jar Jars.

Seems like they're taking all the good parts from the prequels

Obi-Wan's ghost coming back makes sense, so I'm happy Ewan is coming back for that.

Obi Wan should get his own solo film... to have Ewan come back as young Obi Wan ghost when he was old Obi Wan ghost at the end of Jedi doesn't make sense... unless he got ghost jealous of Vader being young Vader and not old crusty ghost Vader.

I think it should be a new Galactic War

Star Wars Ghosts vs. Star Wars Holograms. The first movie will just be figuring out which entity is a ghost, and which is a hologram. The ghosts finally get the upper hand when they learn that they can transmit *themselves* as holograms.

If there is any reason to rewatch those prequels,it will be for him.he is the saving grace of that trilogy.even though i couldn't figure out how they bring back his character,i would love to see him in the new sequels

Continuity?

So, we're going to end the final scene of Return Of The Jedi with the ghost of Alec Guinness... and then... the next story has him turn younger?

I'm sure the "force ghost" won't look like 43 year old Ewan McGregor. Lucasfilm will probably use CG to make Ewan look older and more like Alec Guiness.

How did anakins ghost look like a young anakin before he became vader and not as it was originally shown as old anakin could it be depending on how they feel they can choose the way they appear

Ewan was great as Kenobi, but...

It would look weird for a young Obi-wan ghost to mentor an older Luke. And it really wouldn't make sense to do Obi-Wan without Anakin, since he's Luke's father. I feel like if they over-do it with these force ghosts it'll take away some of the mystery of the idea. Much like the midi-chlorians.

Ewan McGregor is now 42 and old enough to play old Ben Kenobi.

@martinphipps, Alec Guinness was about 20 years older than McGregor is now when he filmed A New Hope. Even older by the time they got to Return Of The Jedi. So no, Ewan McGregor is not old enough yet to play old Obi-Wan.

Alec Guinness looked good for his age. And Obi Wan died in A New Hope. It didn't make sense that his ghost should continue to age.

Nope.

Not happening. Unless they plan on totally disregarding the Alec Guinness' Obi Wan at the end of Return of the Jedi. I think Ewan is a fine actor but for continuity reasons this is just unacceptable.

Even with the cringe-inducing dialog he had to deliver and Lucas's Ed Wood-esque "Cut, Print, Perfect" direction...McGregor was the one actor who got his character across. Same can't even be said of Anthony Daniels, Frank Oz or James Earl Jones. I'd dig seeing McGregor play Obi Wan with a real script and a real director.

But kinda tiring of all these 'gettin' the band back together' casting rumors. Tease me some NEW characters and casting decisions. None of these old cast members should

Bring Obi Wan and Ewan back!

No one can ever replace Sir Alec Guinness, but Obi Wan is such an important character to the Star Wars franchise and to Luke Skywalker's teachings. One of the best things to come out of the Star Wars prequels was that Ewan McGregor sold everyone, even the biggest die hard Star Wars fans, that he was Obi Wan. McGregor is the man and is the great Obi Wan!

How is Ewan going to come back when Obi Wan was killed as Sir Alec Guinness in the original (and far better) series?

As long as they CGI Alec Guinness I have no problem with Obi-Wan coming back. I welcome it in fact. If it would end up with McGregor, then, no thank you. Not that I have anything against McGregor, or McGregor as Obi-Wan (he was one of the rare decent things about the prequels), but you can't go with anyone else than Alec Guinness for "force ghost" old man Kenobi.

I would welcome him back. I think he played a great obi-wan but they would have to age him a lot, unless he was a ghost of course. so sad Alec Guinness can't reprise the role!

Old Obi Wan (Alec Guinness) will first appear to someone (it doesn't matter) and they won't know who he is. He'll be about to speak but hold up his like "just a moment" cough and turn into young Obi Wan (Ewan McGregor) and commence with whatever it is he has to say! But he still won't be recognized by whoever he's talking to... why would they know who he is unless they saw "holograms" of young Obi Wan (which actually would make sense since he was totally off the grid when he was older but all a

If this movie features any more blue-tinged characters, it's going to look like an 'Avatar' sequel.

Rumour: not just Obi-Wan, but every-wan is back for Episode VII. As he said so memorably, "move along". I wouldn't mind a quick cameo, though.

They should leave him out. They should bring back Mark Hamill and the Emperor. That's it. The rest should stay away. If they bring back Harrison Ford and Billy D Williams, they are going to have those standard we are too old for this kind of thing jokes. They need a fresh start.

Bring back the old crew for the 1st film. Use them to introduce the new players and then kill most of them off. If Abrams can give an emotional entrance and exit to Kirks dad then he can give Han Solo and company a mind blowing farewell. Then have parts 2 and 3 be with the new characters. I wouldn't mind seeing hammil stick around for all 3 though. Although I imagine fanboys will rage if they kill these characters off.

I know others have mentioned this, but it would make no sense. It should be Old Obi Wan. Now if you want to interject some Qui Gon Jin, I'd be down with that. Clearly we'll see Gosh digital yoda at some point.

I do think they need to be very careful with all of these ghosts. It can be too much. Just shows that they don;t really have a great story they are building off of if you feel the need to resurrect all these old characters. I smell Mace Windew ghost all over this and that's an
