Update: Tim Burton officially in talks to direct the sequel to Beetlejuice

10.21.2013

UPDATE: I guess the rumors have come to fruition. The Wrap is reporting that Tim Burton is currently in talks to direct the sequel according to their sources. They also state that Michael Keaton is expected to return as "the ghost with the most". Everyone can now rejoice!

Attention K-Mart shoppers!

We have another hefty rumor from the guys over at Schmoes Know. This one involves the long awaited sequel to BEETLEJUICE. No, it's not BEETLEJUICE GOES TO HAWAII or HAWAIIAN VACATION or whatever. That would have ruined everything.

Okay, so the source close to Schmoes Know happens to be a "high ranking studio executive" originally told the site that Tim Burton was thinking of dropping out of the adaptation of MISS PEREGRINE'S HOME FOR PECULIAR CHILDREN in order to take on BEETLEJUICE 2. Burton has since realized that MISS PEREGRINE is one that he doesn't want to let go of just yet, so he's shifting his schedule to try to take on both films. A year ago, Burton apparently gave his blessing on the project and became involved in a limited capacity.

Seth Grahame-Smith is still on as scribe as far as we can tell so all they need to do is take it to Michael Keaton and get him on board. If this is all true then all the elements are slowly coming together. All we know about the story is that it will be a continuation 27 years later.

The thought of Burton and Keaton coming back together makes me so happy inside. It's showtime!

The original was pretty scary really. I want them to make the next one SCARY. Beetlejuice is all about scaring people with twisted WTF gimmicks. With Tim Burtons imagination, like the snake scene in the first, and with Danny Elfman coming back for the music, I am sure the scares will happen.
I am extremely excited about this. I always wanted to see an updated Beetljuice. With all the new HD and special lighting they have now days.

I think a few flashback scenes showing who Beetle Juice was when he was alive would be kinda cool.

AWESOME!

If this is true, and Keaton is on board I'm so there! Bring back Alec Baldwin, Winona Ryder, and Geena Davis also. Of course you would have to explain why they have aged (Alec more so than Geena). If they at least bring back Winona they could have her grown up with a family of her own, and then she gets in trouble and the ghost with the most shows up.

Kinda like with the Army Of Darkness 2 news - I might be bit more exited if it was like 1996 or something.

But good to see Keaton getting work, I guess...

That's a good question but I think his costumes and make-up would stay the same so that it would conceal his age.

Agreed

Michael Keaton is missed, and while it seems Burton only does remakes and sequels, this is actually one I would love to see.

I'm all for it, but....

Is he gonna have Helena Bonham Carter as Lydia? I'm sure she'll be in it in some capacity. Ugh, only good thing she was in was Fight Club.

I'm actually kind of ok with this

If this is what we've gotta do to get Michael Keaton back as a leading man, then that's what we gotta do.

We all know that a sequel could never match the uniqueness and freshness of the original. However, with Burton directing and Keaton starring, you can't help but get excited. Like Outsider mentioned, I'm concerned about too much CGI (really hoping Burton goes back to his practical roots for this) but more so the story and the script. Especially if Seth Grahame-Smith is still writing it. Yikes.

I'd be interested...

...only if they keep CGI to a minimum. Seems like that could be a road they go down. The original special effects helped give the film so much character. That'd be lost with broad, sweeping flash and gloss.

Nice fucking model!

It would certainly be great to see Keaton back as Beetlejuice. This is still my favourite Tim Burton movie and feel like it wouldnt be the same without him if he wasn't directing.

I'd be more interested in Keaton & Rider returning, rather than Burton. Also, they better have some Harry Belafonte tunes...

I don't doubt for a minute that Michael Keaton could still cut it in the title role, and I'd like to think Burton could relocate his mojo for this, but mostly I'd like to think they'd have the balls to use as many practical effects as possible, because that was a big part of what made the original so much fun.

15 to 27 years ago I would've been chopping at the bit to see this sequel. The film was the first time I remember actually asking my parents to go see a movie each time a commercial appeared on TV. But frankly today I don't see Burton in the same light ever since the guy blatantly sold out to Hollywood rather than master his niche.

I feel similarly...the last movie of Burton's I found good was Sleepy Hollow, so let's just assume he's lost his touch. Add to that the fact that nostalgia-based sequels are NEVER good (Indiana Jones 4 anyone?) and this is a recipe for BLECH.

*champing, actually

And I don't disagree... but when he's working with original material I don't entirely mind the watered-down Burton. If Dark Shadows Burton shows up on the Beetlejuice 2 set, I'll be a satisfied camper (not the best-case scenario, but at least it will be fun).

...lol, "original material", I say, remembering immediately after the fact that the Dark Shadows movie is of course based on the soap opera. Smacks far more original than much else the director has done of late, anyhow.

Sorry thanks meant to type chomping.

Its sad to think that in the past twenty years he's only directed two memorable original movies, Sleepy Hallow & Sweeney Todd.

Yea you could see tones of his earlier works in Dark Shadows, like maybe he was slightly interested in creating something beyond t-shirts at Hot Topic.

Not sure how I feel about. Sequels tend to be half as good as the first and this one is almost 30yrs later...soo...
I mean, I still want Ghostbusters 3, but I have doubts it would be a great film, maybe good, doubtful about great. Same goes with Beetlejuice 2. I dunno how I feel about that though it would be fun to see them again.

There are so many ways to screw this thing up. Michael Keaton has gone on record saying it's his favorite role, and I believe he could still play it. Tim Burton and Danny Elfman are also necessary. Beetlejuice is my favorite movie from childhood. When I was little I bought all the toys, I watched the cartoon, I dressed up like him for Halloween, I still have the old VHS and it's damn near worn out. All this to say, if they're going to make a sequel, make sure all the pieces are in place.

Maitlands don't ned to be there because they've aged significantly, The Deetzes could because they're still living (too bad they didn't make this back when Glenn Shadix and Sylvia Sidney were still alive).

I'd be willing to see a BEETLEJUICE 2

but, for God's sake, get him away from MISS PEREGRINE'S HOME FOR PECULIAR CHILDREN. That's a great book and Burton's terrible when he's dealing with another writer's story.

If Keaton comes back, then my excitement just went way up, but for now it's an "eh." Honestly, I think that Burton could handle this. Granted, pretty much all of his newer flicks have been, well, crap. However, since this is a character & world that hea has done before, & done well, I believe that there's a shot for a good movie here. I'm not entirely confident with Grahame-Smith as the writer. All that being said, if both Burton & Keaton don't come back for the sequel, then just don't make it.

The one thing that stuck out for me was the involvement of Seth Grahame-Smith which fills me with dread. Total hack responsible for the appalling book Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and screenplay for the dire Dark Shadows.

Will Ferrel as Beetlejuice!!!!!!....... Just going with a Hollywood thought process. And if we can't get him, how about Adam Sandler...or David Spade???

How about no.

I feel bad even saying this due to the fact that I was such a huge Burton fan most of my life. Given that in my opinion, Big Fish was his last great film, I do not want him touching Beetlejuice 2. Burton has demolished almost everything he has touched lately and what can even remotely be considered half way decent is nothing but water downed creativity that we used to love.

Is that even a question? I'm still not completely convinced that a sequel is really justified all these years later, but if Michael Keaton returns Tim Burton had better return as well. How the hell could a great Beetlejuice film be made without him?
