UPDATED: Rumors swirl that J.J. Abrams is dropping out of directing Star Wars: Episode VII. Will he return to direct Star Trek 3?

Jul. 23, 2013by:

UPDATE: As expected, Lucasfilm has issued a statement denying tensions with J.J. Abrams: "There is no truth to the rumor. J.J. is having a great time working on the script and is looking forward to going into production next year."

Uh, oh. Has J.J. Abrams found the project that even he cannot tackle? After the huge fanfare at his taking over George Lucas' STAR WARS universe with STAR WARS: EPISODE VII, many wondered if having Disney and Lucasfilm controlling the overall project would be too much for Abrams to handle. After having the freedom to completely reinvent STAR TREK, Abrams now has strictures in furthering the legacy of STAR WARS.

While STAR TREK 3 has found new screenwriters in Zack Stentz and Ashley Edward Miller (FRINGE, THOR, X-MEN: FIRST CLASS), rumors continue to include Abrams as the director of that second sequel. Blastr reports that Zachary Quinto shared some details that had Abrams directing STAR TREK 3 in 2014, which was quickly refuted by writer/producer Roberto Orci:

"I'd love to have J.J. back. We're still talking to Paramount about what the scheduling might be and if we can all do it together again, but yeah I read that too and I was like, 'Whoa, does [Quinto] know something I don't? I'd better call him.' He owes me a call."

With new screenwriters just hired, it would make more sense to have the movie shoot in 2015 for a release in 2016 to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the original STAR TREK series. But, one constant has been hearing that J.J. Abrams would still direct. These new rumors that Abrams is on the verge of dropping out of STAR WARS: EPISODE VII have been reaching fever pitch in recent days with Comic Con surely fanning the flames. Critic Ali Arikan tweeted this update:

Arikan also claims that casting announcements and shooting dates will be announced this Saturday at Star Wars Celebration Europe. While I doubt Germany will be hearing STAR WARS: EPISODE VII news before we hear it here in the States, crazier things have happened. Keep your ears and eyes open for more news soon.

STAR WARS: EPISODE VII hits theaters, with or without J.J. Abrams, in 2015.

IDK.....

All I can say is poor JJ!! Most rumors always have a kernel of truth. I think this one does as well. He probably doesn't want the movie to come out in 2015....its just too soon. I also bet that the woman that is heading Lucasfilm is getting too much direction from Lucas and in turn is telling JJ the direction to move in way too much.
I'm telling you Lucas cannot let control go of Star Wars....even after he sold it he still has some pull somehow. Its BS....we all want him GONE!!! He totally

Really, Empire was the movie that solidified the Star Wars universe and he didn't even direct it...THANK GOD!! and Star Wars was so poorly put together that he had to have like 12 people re edit the thing 50 times.......so please I don't think Lucas was ever a good director. He's a better [link] when he stepped aside from the creative process. He once had a vision about what Star Wars was....probably took some LSD and found Joseph Cambell and figured out a really cool story....that time is over now...let others give it shot

I just shook my head when I heard this rumor. I am on the fence about J.J Abrahms anyhow...has made a good Star Trek series. He gives it good solid direction but lacks in giving it the coolness and classic traditions that we come to expect. I would hate for him to make the same mistakes in Star Wars.

This reeks of rumor

I wouldn't take this at all seriously. I doubt in his position he would even make a comment of this nature in public or anyone outside his family even if it where true. It most likely stems from his dissatisfaction having to film in the UK. He's a professional with a contract and a reputation so I'll be really surprised if he walks out at this point.

Star Wars can keep him

If he does drop out, and returns to Star Trek....I can honestly say I will be a bit disappointed. He dropped the ball on Into Darkness. It was an inelegant, tired, flimsy retelling of the Wrath of Khan and it did not live up to the promise of Star Trek (09). Maybe George Lucas or someone else involved (Kathleen Kennedy?) made this realization and told Abrams to step up his game a bit...and I'm sure Disney has all sorts of stipulations for how they envision their new billion-dollar franchise.

Bottom line...Abrams showed us with Into Darkness that he is replaceable. I will be looking forward to Star Trek 3...with hopes of a new vision from a new director.

Doubt it. Into Darkness did well enough both at the box office and with critics that if he still wants to direct Star Trek, I am sure Paramount will let him. Some discontent from people isn't going to have Paramount go around searching for a new director. That said, if he's busy with Star Wars, they may very well find someone else.

Maybe give Star Wars to a competent film maker that doesn't have rampant ADHD, and is actually comfortable doing sci-fi? Someone like Duncan Jones, for example?

Frankly, and people will hate me for this, I find the Abrahms' version of Star Trek unwatchable. But then again, I can't name any of his limited number of movies that I've liked.

I think you touched on a pretty good point. I'm not really a fan of JJ Abrams as a filmmaker period. He certainly was not on my list at all of directors I'd like to see take on Star Wars. But I did think his 2009 Star Trek was really good, even if the ending was a little tacked on and forced. But his follow up with Into Darkness was horrible. It was a rushed and thoughtless story. I was never really upset about him reimagining/retelling the Khan storyline from the show/movie, I just

@antarius At least I was able to form my own thoughts into words instead of copying and pasting a quote from a 300-wannabee show. Grow some pubes, get out of your parent's basement, and talk to me in a few years when your voice finally changes after your balls have dropped.

People seem to fail to understand why Abrams would be selected. He's a watchable director. All of his films have done well at the box office and with critics. There seems to be a contingent of people out there with some kind of issue with Abrams, despite the fact that he has actually fared well with his movies. Then again, there is a contingent that thinks that Christopher Nolan is also a hack, which has also been proven wrong time and again.

In a perfect world we would get Abrams finishing his Star Trek trilogy and also being able to start a new Star Wars franchise.

To be honest, I would rather see Abrams finish Star Trek and give someone else a shot at Star Wars. There are alot of other, just as good capable directors out there.

Not in a million years

I think there's nobody else who COULD do this. And I think Disney knows this, so they'll give J.J. whatever he wants to keep him happy.

Total bullshit

It does not seem in Abram's nature to drop from his childhood dream to return to direct something that doesn't even have a script yet. Plus, there are a bunch of other directors who would be perfectly suited for the Star Trek world, let Abrams move on.

I really do wish all the best to the future of STAR WARS but I hope that this rumor is true. Abrams should round out his take on the STAR TREK universe. Leave STAR WARS in the hands of a different yet capable director. I know I'll get some thumbs down but that's just my opinion.

Way to bury the lead that Star Trek 3 has new writers that aren't Orci, Kurtzman and Lindeloff. I wish you would've focused more on that instead of this rumor about J.J. Abrams leaving Episode VII that has no basis in reality.
