Rupert Sanders signs on to direct live action version of Ghost in the Shell

Jan. 24, 2014by: Niki Stephens

When the topic of anime gets brought up, the first film people immediately blurt out is GHOST IN THE SHELL. If youre a fan of the genre, its pretty much required viewing. A live action version of the material has been trying to get off the ground for some time now. The last we even reported on it was back in 2009 when Dreamworks announced that they were bringing it to big screens in 3D.

Now it seems that the studio has finally made a deal with Rupert Sanders (SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN) to helm the adaptation. Masamune Shirow's creation started as a manga in 1989 then went on to produce several animated films, a television series, and a video game. Its fair to say that the story is immensely popular amongst its fans.

The story centers on,

the exploits of a member of a covert ops unit of the Japanese National Public Safety Commission that specializes in fighting technology-related crime.

Theres a new version of the script from William Wheeler. You may or may not remember his script work from 2006s THE HOAX starring Richard Gere. Definitely not much to go on in terms of how it might turn out.

My next thought goes to who they are thinking might be good for the leading role of Motoko Kusanagi. Any suggestions?

No fu$#% way this adaptation is gonna turn into something good. Whoever saw the animation knows.
Hollywood doesn't have the touch to adapt animes like Bleach, Death Note, Cowboy Bebeop, Ninja Scroll, Samurai Champloo, into live action movies.

WTF..

Transcendence is already a rip off of the concept and since james cameron also announced that he will do
Battle Angel in 2016 it seems like the studio is just trying to beat them 1st. Anyways I am a big fan of ghost and the shell and have seen all the movies except the series and I feel that the movie is going to be bad idea because there are already quite a lot of live action films that have borrowed from this anime heavily such as matrix and blade runner, so it wont be as revolutionizing as

Wow ...

I am both terrified and hopeful about this. I'm gonna have to see how this one goes. I can only hope they will keep it Japanese, or at least make an american iteration that is true to the spirit of the original. We can only hope.

No good can come of this. The movies is going to be a shallow action sci-fi that will probably borrow little of the philosophy behind the original film and the series. There is no reason for this to be live action, animated is the best medium for this. Do not understand.

It would have been nice to see a pic from the original Ghost In The Shell, rather than Stand Alone Complex.

Also, anime converted to live action, is generally just a bad idea all the way around. Almost all live action movies based on anime or manga, are just awful.

Live action version is totally unnecessary. I hardly could be better than the anime.

Casting News:

Kristen Stewart as Major Kusanagi
Andy Serkis as Tachigoma
Thors younger (and cheaper to hire) brother Hemsworth as Batou

I can't wait for the shitty CG and horrible cast to ruin this movie.

My dream cast if this has to be made includes Rinko Kikuchi, Ken Watanabe, Sonny Chiba and Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa

Ghost is Born

Is nothing scared! It's all in the casting. Hollywood just throws money at names and not talent. I also have to comment that when the topic of anime comes up the first film I blurt out AKIRA!!!!!!!!

Let's wait and see

This could be great or garbage. I don't see it being mediocre. As for who should play Kusanagi, I vote Rinko Kikuchi.

I'm sure some studio heads are thinking something like, "this would be a perfect vehicle for Selena Gomez. Could we add a wisecracking robot pet just to lighten the mood?"

er OK

well if the casting is right and what version of the major are they going with as her cyborg body is different in each version from older to young and her personality is different in each one from flirty and playful to dead serious.

but we will get a dumbed down version if it ever comes to light past the script stage...

I'll always have my doubts because I cant see any anime translating well to live action. Theres always a philosophical slant to anime that if taken out of the translation, it takes away from what makes the film enjoyable. Seeing CGI Tachkomas would be awesome though...

Please don't suck. Also, get a predominantly Japanese cast.

Debbie-downer time.

I hate to be a naysayer, but good anime like Ghost In The Shell is edgy, smart, provocative, and deep. None of these things bodes well when translated into Hollywood territory. They'll dumb it down, substitute nudity for her in skin-tight leather, shorten the run-time, typecast the characters, and to top it all off release it in the worst possible slot without even marketing it well *cough Speed Racer cough*. It'll go up against some massive Dreamworks animation or Pixar film, crash and burn at

yep

IF it gets made casting Motoko could be difficult due to the fact she spends a good deal of time fully nude, but im defo up for this.

Even though I didn't care much for Snow White and The Huntsman, Rupert Sanders has directed some fantastic short films, so he certainly is a very talented filmmaker. I honestly was hoping his next film would be more independent, but still, I hope he does a great job with Ghost in the Shell.
