Russos talk the end of the Marvel Cinematic Universe & Civil War stingers

The Russos have a lot on their collective minds these days as they prepare for a lot of major developments to be unveiled over the next few years. There's the introduction of a new Spider-Man in CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR. They also need to set the table for the Phase Three that emerges from that film. Then, of course, they need to prepare for AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR, both parts, which will be the culmination of a decade-long story arc that will finally have Thanos front and center. The Russos are as important to everything that's going on with the Marvel Cinematic Universe now as Joss Whedon was to its build. And so it was interesting to see them talking about some of those important aspects in which they're so involved in a conversation with Forbes.

First up, the second half of AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR will essentially be the end of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as we've known it to that point. Three phases will have played out to get us there, and once it's over, where does the MCU go from there? The Russos have some perspective on all that expanding that's been done and how it comes together for that two-parter,

It’s a big sprawling ambitious movie, it’s about as ambitious as movies get and it should be, and the title alone indicates that there will be an incredible scape and scope to it.

It is intended to be the entire culmination of the Marvel cinematic universe and, in many ways, the end to that part of it. But we don’t even have the first draft in on that script yet; we’re still in the outline phase. It’s hard not to talk about it too specifically now only because of spoilers but also because we’re still figuring it out.

But before that, they've still got to get through CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR, which will be a table setter for Phase Three. Spider-Man is now involved, in addition to Black Panther and... well, it's very possible we may get some other tidbits that feed into the other films on Marvel's docket for the foreseeable future. That is usually done with some appetizing post-credtis stingers, and the Russos have some thoughts on how long you should keep your ass planted in your seat following CIVIL WAR.

We can’t say who is going to be in it but we can say that there certainly could be one, or two, maybe three. We can confirm that you should stay sat in your seats when the movie is done.

Maybe as many as three? You'd better get yourself comfortable learning who the production babies were during CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR's shoot, because you're not getting up until you see everything you can possibly check out on May 6.

I like the idea that Infinity War is being looked at as the end of the MCU. Not that they'll stop making movies, just that all stories will culminate in those movies. Meaning that Phase 4 leaves them open to not necessarily reboot everything, but retire characters and bring forward new ones and just try new things. Where the last decade seemed to cover alien invasions and government/corporate accountability, I'd figure the new direction would be focused on mysticism and international

In terms of the mid credits scene, I think one direction that would be cool would be that if Captain America does indeed die in Civil War then one of the credits scene could be Doctor Strange standing over his body saying something to the affect of "We still need you" or "your job isn't done yet". That way it shows us some footage of Strange, and leads us into Infinity Wars.

And by doing this perhaps Strange could bring Rogers back from the dead.

After how great Winter Soldier was, and how amazing Civil War looks, I have all the faith in the world these guys can handle the pressure of closing out three phases worth of the MCU, while also juggling all of the storylines and major characters as well. I mean if they already handled two major films with big ensembles of characters while also delivering on the storyline and action, then there should be no reason why lighting can't strike three times in a row.

As far as the new lineup

As far as the new lineup persists; I'm assuming most of the original lineup will take a backseat (Stark, Rogers, Thor) while the new cast of characters will carry the torch such as Bucky, Falcon, Black Panther, Captain Marvel, Spider Man, Doctor Strange, Guardians of the Galaxy, maybe Hulk and the Defenders, etc. In my opinion, what would work best in seeing all of the same cast of characters again through phase four and beyond would be to just split the lineup in two and just have an east coast and west coast Avengers. That way anyone could come back to fight and fans can see their favorite characters again in some capacity.

But if Marvel really wanted to up the ante, maybe they could possibly somehow get the Fantastic Four involved somehow in the MCU (rebooted again of course with a whole new different cast) and than they could have access to Dr Doom, Silver Surfer, and Galatacus and just build up the momentum from their and make the new threat fresh and exciting again.

All I'm saying is that the MCU is in great hands with the Russo's and there's a lot of great films and storylines to look forward to.

So what they're planning is the cinematic equivalent of Marvel Comic's regular company wide crossover and then a lot of new issue #1's. (And I'd guess an opportunity to put new actors in the roles.)

So, Infinity War: Part II ends the (cinenmatic) Marvel Universe as we know it. Well, Disney has already ended and remade the Marvel Universe in the comic books. Some fans have jumped onboard. Other super-fans have hated the re-vision. We shall see what we shall see in late 2019 (after the movie) and beyond.

Can Marvel keep its current large audience after ending this three phase saga? What do American and international audiences want to see four years from now? Do people still want to see

Can Marvel keep its current large audience after ending this three phase saga? What do American and international audiences want to see four years from now? Do people still want to see superhero movies? Which actors still want to play superheroes? Will Marvel Studios--as a business--listen to its dedicated consumers? Or, will the company try to sell them something, with an inside-out philosophy, as Marvel Studios often does now? Will I and you-a-too still be watchers in 2020? It is hard to say but fascinating to contemplate.
