Ryan Reynolds fires bullets and one-liners as Deadpool in the first trailer

08.05.2015

UPDATE: Check out director Tim Miller's trailer breakdown here!

Comic fans know and love the character of DEADPOOL and for those uninitiated, you're about to get a crash course! A former Special Forces operative turned mercenary is subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers as he adopts the alter ego of Deadpool. Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humor, Deadpool hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life. If you remember his stint from X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE, we have a couple of trailers here to erase that from your memory banks. Now, I'm not trying to tell you how to live your life, but the red-band iteration (up first) is the only way to go. See why DEADPOOL aims to be one of the most unique comic book films ever created!

There are some actors who were born to play a role, and it feels like Ryan Reynolds' career has led him to this film. He has the charisma, the physicality, and handles the one-liners like no other. The supporting cast consisting of Morena Baccarin, Ed Skrein, T.J. Miller, Gina Carano, and Brianna Hildebrand round out the line-up nicely, giving us an ensemble that feels different that your usual big-budget affair. While this marks Tim Miller's directorial debut, the man's work in visual effects (SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD) shows. The action is there, the humor is there...now let's see if the story delivers in 6 months' time!

DEADPOOL opens in theaters on February 12, 2016.

People complaining about the fourth wall not being broken need to pay better attention:

When was Wade's on a gurney he asks for his suit not to be green or animated. Get it?

I'm not familiar with Deadpool at all except for what I've read here and seen in the crappy Wolverine film but I think this looks fucking good.

I don't think you understand what "breaking the fourth wall" means. It means literally speaking to the audience, aka transcending the imaginary wall created by the movie screen itself. Wade's comment about green suits might be considered "meta" humor in the way that it pokes fun at Green Lantern, but no. In no way does that comment break the fourth wall.

Don't know if it's your inexplicable hatred for Deadpool and this trailer that is clouding your senses but it's actually you who doesn't seem to fully comprehend the phenomenon of breaking the fourth wall. In this case: the character Wade Wilson indirectly alludes to (the real life) Ryan Reynolds who doesn't exist within the world of Deadpool/Marvel. Not only that, but Wade Wilson is played by Reynolds. So, yes, that is very a case of a broken fourth wall.

Breaking The Fourth Wall: "Breaking the fourth wall is when a character acknowledges their fictionality, by either indirectly or directly addressing the audience. [...] It should be noted that other sources will refer to any fiction that draws attention to its fictionality as 'Breaking The Fourth Wall.' Our definition is a bit narrower: Breaking The Fourth Wall only occurs if the characters acknowledge the audience or the author, whether directly or indirectly."

Take That: "Every so often a TV Series, Film, or even radio talk show will make a reference to another one, usually in the same market niche or genre. [...] A 'Take That' which is well-done and on-point can be enjoyable and satisfying to watch (even if mainly in a schadenfreude sense). [...] Often, a Take That will be aimed at someone or something related to the work itself."

(Definitions courtesy of TVTropes.org)

You'd be right if the line was something like, "And please don't make the supersuit green. Or animated. Like the Green Lantern in that godawful Ryan Reynolds movie." Since that would be addressing the audience's knowledge that Ryan Reynolds played both characters, that would be Breaking The Fourth Wall. In its actually form, the line is simply a Take That (or, if you want to get more specific, it's Self-Deprecation) aimed at another product related to the work itself. Ergo, not Breaking The Fourth Wall, by the widely accepted use of the term.

And just because I'm not jizzing all over the trailer like everyone else around here doesn't mean I "hate" Deadpool. In fact, I'm decidedly neutral on the subject.

"Since that would be addressing the audience's knowledge that Ryan Reynolds played both characters, that would be Breaking The Fourth Wall."

He does, indirectly so, because the characters in the film have no idea what he's talking about. We, the movie-going audience, however, do know, i.e. that line is (indirectly) aimed at us. A character doesn't physically have to face the audience to break the fourth wall, hell, it can even be done with one's eyes closed.

It's not as black and white

It's not as black and white as you make it out to be, nothing ever really is. Anyway, I'm sure there are much better instances of it in the film, it was one of the many things that they promised and seem to be making good on.

Hand down...

Even if the movie sucks (unlikely) the red-band trailer is and will be the best trailer of 2015.

I only know deadpool from uncanny x-force, and deadpool kills the marvel universe (or something like that). I could be wrong but he seemed less annoying in those comics. I think it is a bit of the old trying too hard syndrome. However the costume looks fantastic and I will definitely see it opening night and give it a chance. I mean the action should be good and he fights colossus so that's pretty cool.

CAN'T WAIT!!!!!!!!!

This looks bad ass, and I love almost everything. I have to agree with BrokenDreamer, in that it would have been better if he addressed the red suit to "us" the audience instead of a group of mercenaries. The other thing being that, although I love seeing the classic look of Colossus, the CGI looks a little off. But in understanding with the budget they were given for this film in the first place and just knowing that this awesome f@$ing character is finally getting his own movie, I really

Still very stoked for this film!!! Thank you Mr. Reynolds.

I Bet Your Wondering Why This Bar is Red . . .

First, I hate the placement of the line that was used in the test footage. I think it fits the character more to address the audience by breaking the fourth wall, instead of saying it to a group of criminals before an action scene. It just feels so forced. Why would anyone in that group be wondering at that moment why he is wearing red?

Second, why is no one complaining about the CGI blood?

Third, I just don't think any of the supporting characters are that interesting. There already

Third, I just don't think any of the supporting characters are that interesting. There already is enough complaints about TJ Miller, but I am more concerned about the lines he says in that clip. It's just not very funny, and it seems like it has far too many variations on the same line.

I'm interested, and I want it to be good, but this trailer did not sell me on it.

TJ MIller sucks ass

I think the movie looks great but holy hell TJ Miller is just shitty at obvious improv. I really hope he isn't in the movie for long, he just sucks the fun out of everything.

One of the better trailers I've seen. Here's hoping it succeeds so we'll see more like it.

I have never read the Deadpool comics, so I have no knowledge of or affinity to the character. I know that position puts me in the minority on this website but I'm definitely in the majority when it comes to the moviegoing public, and I gotta say... that trailer does nothing for me. The line about red shirts and brown pants? Who hasn't already heard that joke a hundred times before? Not to mention the groan-worthy line about touching himself. Everything about this so far screams "We're trying

Everything about this so far screams "We're trying waayyy too hard to be cool by making a generic-looking superhero movie and inserting streams of profanity." It may be faithful to the source material but I can pretty much guarantee it will have very limited play outside of the hardcore comic book fan circuit. (Now bring on the downvotes, I suppose.)

No downvote from me. I happen to love Deadpool as a character, but I agree that this makes them look like they are trying way too hard. Deadpool was a very fluid character with no filter or rationality. Most fanboys that i've met just geek out because of the profanity and the "no f**ks given" attitude, but they fail to understand the complexity of the character. Also, I haven't seen any 4th wall breaks which is highly disappointing as that is integral to the character.

I mean...you're not wrong per se, but...the only reason you've heard that joke a hundred times before is because Deadpool did it first, back in the 90s. So, it's sorta like calling Flash Gordon a rip off of Star Wars :P

I don't personally know the origins of that joke, but I have a hard time believing that Deadpool was the first time it was ever told, even in the '90s. It was probably already a reference back then.

I love everything about it and I have zero doubt its going to be the most faithful, and best, Marvel movie that Fox ever puts out. I am sad about one thing though, this isn't the full SDCC trailer. They edited some of that out. The The Chrome Cock Gobbler Colossus burn, the Negasonic Teenage Warhead "thats the best fucking name EVAR!" joke and a few others. Would have loved to see that full trailer in full glory.

Looks pretty good, and I'm REALLY surprised Marvel is actually giving the fans an R rated film. I really didn't think it would ever happen. One of the positive things people did say about X-men Origins Wolverine was how great Ryan Reynolds was as Deadpool. He was perfectly cast. I could see he would be great even back in Blade 3. His wise cracking smart mouth is perfect for the character.

The green band gives a good glimpse of what a PG-13 Deadpool would be like. So glad for that R rating. I love the red band trailer but I miss some of the lines like "You big chrome cock gobbler" from the comic con trailer. It would've added like 10 seconds to the trailer to keep those jokes in? I don't understand why they were cut
