Ryan Reynolds promises that Green Lantern will be more space epic than comedy

Apr. 1, 2011by: Niki Stephens

Ryan Reynolds has been keeping us in the real on GREEN LANTERN. He's already defended the suit and now he's defending the genre.

Reynolds has been listening to the fan outpour and realizes that the trailer may have come off a little more comedic than intended. He promises that this is not the case, "They were worried about it. I think people should have their opinions. Fanboys are known to have a very loud voice. They’re known to beat their chest hard when they like or dislike something, and that’s all part of the game. I know, because I was an integral part of the shooting process, that the movie is not a comedy at all. There’s definitely a few funny moments in it. The levity is really kind of more in a Han Solo kind of vein than anything broader."

He then made a comment on taking a leading role like this one for a big studio, "You are quite exposed. You’re putting yourself out there on the rounds. And the push is just gonna be astronomical for this. It’s kind of exciting.”

During WonderCon, Reynolds told the LA Times that he was drawn to this film because it was a "space epic":

“A movie like this, you can’t even really get a script when you meet with the director. You have to base your decision solely on concept art and what their objectives are. For me, what sold me was the space epic. The idea of doing a superhero movie particularly in a summer particularly crowded with superhero films – it’s not really necessarily appealing to watch a guy earthbound. For me, it wasn’t. I love the space idea. The idea that it’s kind of like ‘Star Wars.’ I just knew that it would encompass so much ingenuity, creating a whole other world.”

President of Warner Bros. motion pictures, Jeff Robinov let everyone know this week that the studio would be going ahead with a JUSTICE LEAGUE film for 2013. What did Reynolds have to say about that? “That’s a whole other conversation. That’s a whole business model and nothing to do with me at all. No one has ever approached me about doing a ‘Justice League’ movie. We’ll see if they do it in the long run.”

Extra Tidbit: Do you guys really think a JUSTICE LEAGUE movie is finally coming our way?

I assumed the comedic tone of the first trailer was just to get people without a lot of familiarity of Green Lantern interested in the movie (make it seem like Iron Man), but I never thought the final product would be as comedic. I'm kind of glad they aren't giving too much away with this movie, its nice going into a blockbuster and not have all the major scenes spoiled for you.

Um...

Am I the ONLY one that knows Hal Jordan is and always has been a bit of a Han Solo like smart ass? Seriously, when Reynolds brought up Han Solo any Hal Jordan fans worry should have melted away.

The 4 minuet clip was great. I'm pretty darn hyped.

There's an awful lot of hate for a movie that is probably going to be awesome. Both Martin Campbell and Geoff Johns are working on Green Lantern, that pretty much guarantees it's gonna be good.

Geoff Johns, the guy that ripped off Civil War, Marvel Zombies and Captain Planet for Blackest Night/Brightest Day? I like Johns, but you can tell where he's grabbing his source material from for his writing.

It's getting annoying hearing complaints about the film coming from people displaying outright ignorance of the character. For every "suit looks stupid being CGI, why they do that" that is answered by "It's made of energy from the ring, it makes sense it wouldn't look like Fabric or Rubber" you get a shamed "Well, I didn't know that, but it still looks fake" should be answered by a justified pimp slap. It's like some people don't know whether it's cool to bash it, or like it, and become pricks

LOL, I like how people are acting like Ryan is on a street corner somewhere defending Green Lantern. "IF you have to come out and say this..blah blah blah." I'm sure he was asked during an interview. Hes not just going to blow them off

I was at the panel at Wondercon yesterday, and what I saw (and heard) was a bunch of one-liners. All coming from Reynolds. The CGI now looks overly worked and busy to the point that it doesn't look realistic, but I guess that's better than how crappy it looked previously.

Honestly, I'm thinking this one is going to be a mediocre effort. Not as horrible as Jonah Hex. Not as miscued as Superstalker Returns. But nowhere near Nolan's Batman franchise.

I think they are planning for it but they are in the very early stages of planning and havent adressed any of the actors who are playing DC characters yet.

"I think people should have their opinions. Fanboys are known to have a VERY loud voice. They’re known to BEAT THEIR CHESTS HARD when they like or dislike something, and that’s all part of the GAME." So, we are entitled to our opinions, are we, Ryan? Well, thank you for that. Also, your use of superlatives and pongid imagery is interesting. But, perhaps, I read your words incorrectly. Hopefully, Green Lantern is as good as you indicate. You use also the phrases "game," "at all," and "real kind

Why not speak matter-of-factly instead of using "at all" (overemphasis of an expression that you do not quite believe) or "real kind of" (why qualify your words and, again, exaggerate how real/true that they are)?

This is worrying...

First of all, there hasn't been a second trailer and it's only little more than a month away from release. Then, there was the seemingly last minute additions of Geoffrey Rush and Michael Clarke Duncan. And now, there are these damage-control statements. Something tells me this is going to be another rush job, ala Jonah Hex.

The movie comes out in 2 1/2 month on June 17.
This "last minute addition" isn't unusual, because the recording for such parts normally don't take that long for an actor (2-3 days).

Ryan can promise all he wants but bottom line, I promise that Green Lantern will under perform at the box office.

I mean if you feel compelled to come out with that kind of statement, then you know this movie is in a whole lot of trouble! With a whole lot of comedy, I think I'll skip this one and Thor!
