Ryan Reynolds says Deadpool movie is "tip toeing" forward; still faithful it will happen

Oct. 24, 2013by: Paul Shirey

Time for your quarterly DEADPOOL update, courtesy of one of the film's biggest champions, Ryan Reynolds, who first portrayed the character in 2009's X-MEN ORIGINS: THE WOLVERINE. The SAFE HOUSE star was doing press for the release of TURBO in the UK and openly discussed the current state of the film and whether or not he thinks it will ever get made. Deadpool aka Wade Wilson, created by Rob Liefeld and writer Fabian Nicieza, is a tricky character for any studio to greenlight, due largely to, well, the content of his character. Deadpool is an outrageous, violent, and mentally unstable character who constantly "breaks the fourth wall," which is definitely something that puts men with money on edge. Especially if they're named in the script by Deadpool himself.

Here's Ryan:

"[In] its current iteration the movie’s actually very small,. There’s minimal impact to the studio, which is the way we’re kind of presenting it to them. We’re saying ‘Look, the budget is minimal. Therefore, can we do this the way it should be done?’ Which unfortunately needs a Rated R [age certificate] or it needs those elements. The script is probably available online, it leaked.

But it’s very meta, I mean the character knows he’s in a movie, he knows he’s in a comic book. He names studio executives in the script. So, it’s kind of a risky property. But, you know, we’ll see. It's actually, within the last couple of weeks, taken a few very, very small tiptoes forward. In our lifetime? Yeah, I think so. I think if I were a betting man it’ll get made, eventually. I mean it’s just been developed to high heaven. It has great people around it, so we’ll see."

For me, Reynolds was the best thing about the X-MEN ORIGINS: THE WOLVERINE and I felt that he really had the "pulse" of ol' Wade Wilson. I'm sure there are other actors who could fill those crazy boots, but Reynolds has made the strongest case thus far and I'm really hoping this happens soon. Perhaps with Jeff Wadlow (KICK-ASS 2) developing the X-Men spinoff X-FORCE there will be a place for DEADPOOL. I mean, they've got to be considering that avenue, which could serve as another "proving ground" for the character and potentially open up the doors for his solo venture. You gotta watch those fans, though, man. We clamor for something hardcore and then when we get it, the results aren't always pretty. Remember WATCHMEN?

Reynolds will next be seen in Atom Egoyan's THE CAPTIVE in 2014.

Extra Tidbit: Do you think there's a better actor suited for Deadpool? Let's hear it!

I never knew who Deadpool was until the Wolverine movie. I don't ever recall coming across him during my comic collecting days (how would you forget a character like that???). My experiences of him from then on...was Hulk vs Wolverine, clips from the PS3 game and the infuriating, frustratingly annoying Unlimited Spider-Man Cartoon. This thing about him breaking the fourth wall puts me off him...was it really that way in the comics? I mean...everything is ridiculous in the world of comic

Can't it just be made so that Deadpool is kinda of talking to himself coz...well...he's mentally unstable and not us...and definitely not about the people making the film? Especially if this movie is supposed to be within Fox's Marvel universe.

you dont understand.... its core to his character... youd have to read the comics... especially the "deadpool kills..." series', cuz thatll help explain what happens with his obsession with "breaking the fourth wall" goes... and its pretty damn cool... but as far as the past, yea, everyone else in the marvel universe justs writes it off as exactly as u were saying... that deadpool is not all there in the brain and that he talks to himself cause he mustve been brain-damaged in some way in the

I still think Seann William Scott would make a great Deadpool. He looks athletic and has good comedic timing. Other than Reynolds, he's the one I can imagine most in the roll.

Ryan Reynolds just needs to disappear, would love it if the Deadpool movie went ahead and they decided to recast the part, might have a chance at being not terrible then.

The Game

Everybody involved in the movie really needs to play the Deadpool game. The jokes, the weapons the [link] That's how the film should be.

No, it needs to be rated R, period.

I'm behind you Reynolds!

I still believe Reynolds can do it. He's got the passion and the chops to bring our Deadpool to life. Wolverine: Origins wasn't his fault. Now granted Thomas Jane dropped from the second Punisher movie because an awful story maybe Reynolds should've done the same. But I still believe that under the right director and writer he can do a great job!

I can't wait for this film to actually get made. I think it would put Reynolds back in a lot of people's good graces again since he is very passionate about the role and would probably end being a fan favorite film amongst us film fans on this website.

Rob McElhenney?

Am I the only one who thinks Mac from its always sunny would be a great deadpool, Reynolds does not have a great history with comic book movies

He would be terrible. If anyone, if Reynolds couldn't do it, I would want Timothy Olyphant. He would be perfect for a back up choice.

Actually that's not a bad suggestion. Considering he has the voice and the sarcastic wit to pull off Deadpool, I'd be totally fine with this choice. Plus it would be a bonus to have Deadpool keep the mask on for the entire movie; something that the studio would not do if Reynolds took the role, since they would want the audience to see him in the trailers and a good portion of the movie sans a mask.

McElhenney. Sorry man, I know your man crush with Reynolds knows no bounds, but if they have to find reasons to have him take his mask off every ten minutes to get their money's worth, i'd much rather have a relative unknown fill DP's shoes. And Olyphant would not be good either; love him on Justified and pretty much everything else, but he's not Deadpool.

I don't hate the McElhenney. Never thought of it though. And very good point about keeping the mask on. I love Reynolds for the role, but they'd want to capitalize on his sex appeal... which isn't Deadpool at all.

Reynolds would be the best for the role imo, but if he stepped out for some reason both of these alternates would be pretty good! Give McElhenny a chance to shine or have Olyphant get back to his seriously sarcastic days that I miss!!!

There's only one person who would be better than Ryan Reynolds namely because they could just Darth Vader the whole thing and that's Nolan North.

I hope

I hope we do get a dead pool movie, but I hope Reynolds has nothing to do with it.
