Ryan Reynolds says even the most critical fan will love Deadpool

03.16.2015

Ryan Reynolds loves the character of Deadpool, we all know this. His appearance in X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE notwithstanding, Reynolds has championed the feature film DEADPOOL for years. When it was finally greenlit, we began worrying that it may be PG-13 versus the R rating we all feel it needs to fully realize the character from the pages of Marvel Comics. Now, Reynolds is reassuring us that DEADPOOL is in good hands.

In an interview with The Shortlist about his new movie THE VOICES, Reynolds shared his positivity and enthusiasm for the crew working to bring us DEADPOOL.

I’m incredibly happy about it - we’ve got a director that understands that world, and writers with a slavish devotion to the canon of that character. That’s the most important aspect: it’s made in a way the most critical of fanboys could embrace. Well, that’s the hope.

There is a great chance that even a PG-13 take on DEADPOOL could be good, but I still feel this needs to be over-the-top violent and profane to do the character justice. Even the popular leaked test footage was closer to R than PG-13, but we all know the studio needs to make it a viable franchise in this day and age.

DEADPOOL begins production soon with Morena Baccarin, Gina Carano, T.J. Miller, and Ed Skrien in supporting roles. The film hits theaters on February 12, 2016.

It seems like every time an actor or author or someone associated with a film says "it's in good hands" the movie ends up sucking

So much talk from behind the scenes. Can't wait to see them bring it with photos or teasers.

I think Kingsmen proved an R rated comic film can be a hit, so maybe that will breathe a sign of relief for the studios to make this an R rated one as well. Deadpool is really not one for the kiddies anyway, especially if they think he the version that was in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. This time he needs to be the true Deadpool fans know & love.

It doesn't really have to be R

None of the X-Men movies have been R rated and I don't think Fox will release an R-rated Deadpool. Maybe there will be an R-rated directors cut. But, no, Fox wants this to make money and if it doesn't make money then Fox will not greenlight sequels. That means that we may never see the X-Force movie that apparently already has a script. I'm sure they can make a good Deadpool movie without having to show a lot of blood.

Just be rated R.

Kingsmen was amazing and did VERY well at the box office for an R rated action film aimed towards teenagers.

I think an R rated Deadpool will earn twice of what any Wolverine movie has made so far...

While I disagree with your second point, if they give it a healthy push for February or March, it could really do well. Basically anything before Easter could do.

Kingmen has a much better cast, and a talented director. Even if Deadpool is good, I'd be surprised if it does significantly better than Dredd, an great r-rated comic book film that didn't connect with main stream audiences.

Excited for this and am glad to read Reynolds is so enthusiastic about the character and film. The guy is talented and I hope the film turns out well for his sake, which I think it will.

And I agree with The_Conman in that it shouldn't be a big budget film. I mean use the money in areas where needed, but if they don't go overboard and actually promote the film correctly and properly, there is no reason why this character and film can't be a hit.

Listen

this is a franchise much like Blade that DOESNT need to be 75-200 million dollars. This is easily a 50 million dollar movie. Make it R, Promote it right. The Fans and Public will come.
