Ryan Reynolds to team up with Tarsem Singh for Black List thriller Selfless

Apr. 25, 2013by:

It looks like director Tarsem Singh is about to team up with another superhero. Sort of. Tarsem's IMMORTALS starred the future Superman, Henry Cavill, and the filmmaker is now set to join forces with GREEN LANTERN himself, Ryan Reynolds, in the Black List 2011 script SELFLESS, written by Alex and David Pastor (CARRIERS).

Here's the story:

The thriller focuses on a wealthy older man who discovers hes dying and pays to have his mind transplanted into a younger mans body. Turns out that body is a cadaver whose previous inhabitant was murdered. Soon, hes hunted by killers as he tries to get to the bottom of who took him out in the first place.

Sounds pretty cool to me. I'm a big fan of Tarsem's work, minus that unfortunate MIRROR, MIRROR business. I loved IMMORTALS, warts and all, and it features a terrific performance by Cavill, which ultimately sold me on him as the future MAN OF STEEL. Tarsem also directed the Vince Vaughn/Jennifer Lopez thriller THE CELL, which was a visual mindf*ck of coolness and a very underrated fantasy pic called THE FALL. Great stuff from a visionary filmmaker.

Having the director on a sci-fi thriller sounds like a great fit and Reynolds will do just fine. More as this develops.

Extra Tidbit: I know some will cry foul to the high heavens, but I think Singh would be a great fit for a superhero/comic book flick. He's perfectly suited for the genre.

Really had high hope for Tarsem after The Cell because it was such a great & intense film especially when you can make both Jennifer Lopez & Vince vaughn look good. Now I have not seen The Fall but I thought Immortals was simply a 300 rip off & very boring & why even bother with Mirror Mirror. The premise of this film does sound interesting so hopefully it will help Tarsem redeem himself.

I want to like Tarsem so bad...

As a visual director the guy is absolutely awesome. However, he really doesn't seem to mind pushing everything else to the side, and many of his projects have had pretty weak scripts. You put the two of those together and he's been a lot more miss than hit for me. The great, glowing exception to this of course, was The Fall, which I believe thoroughly deserves any praise heaped upon it. That showed that as long as he's got a solid screenplay Tarsem can make a Grade-A film. I personally agree

I personally agree that he'd be a great fit for the superhero genre, in fact he's been my first choice for a Dr. Strange movie for several years now, you'd just need seem talented writers on board to tend to the ingredients that Tarsem neglects.

Sounds like a less interesting version of Joss Whedon's unproduced AfterLife script.

Sounds like a cool Sci-Fi thriller. Hopefully the action, tone, and style are similar to the film Safe House.

If I ever watched a Tarsem film and it had the tone and style of Safehouse I would probably cry. And it wouldn't it wouldn't be happy tears.
