Sam Mendes Talks About The Connection Between Skyfall and Bond 24

Apr. 30, 2014by: Graham McMorrow

Sam Mendes has confirmed that the next Bond flick, tentatively titled Bond 24, takes off from the events of SKYFALL.The featured characters will return aged and affected by event in the previous film.

In a recent interview with the Charlie Rose show the topic naturally turned to the upcoming flick, Mendes explained that with his second Bond film he will be creating the "second part of a two-part story” and that the film isn't a "direct narrative connection”.

The best part of the interview for me was when he mentioned his reason for returning to Bond 24, which is to take care of "a number of stories that are left incomplete" from the first film.  He added "I cast a new M, I cast a new Moneypenny, I cast a new Q. I felt there was a second part of a two-part story" Of course hearing the audience go nuts for the first time when the Aston Martin DB5 was revealed - an "orgy of nostalgia" he calls it, helped persuade him too.

Also making things easier was Bond HQ's willingness to be flexible:

"[It helped] when [Eon] agreed to wait a little longer and not go immediately - not go with two movies [and instead] go with one, which I felt very strongly about."

So to be clear, Bond 24 will feel like the second part of SKYFALL, although it will not be a story continuation.  And Bond 24 and Bond 25 will not be a two-part story (as originally planned). Also, it's important to note that the great John Logan will still be turning in two scripts as he is still on board to write the films.

I’m sure I wasn’t alone at the end of SKYFALL asking many questions, like how in the hell did Bond survive the shot and fall? Where did he get the money to live on an Island without MI6 knowing? And where did I put my keys?

You can check out the full interview below (he begins talking about Bond at the 17-minute mark).

Daniel Craig returns as James Bond, Ralph Fiennes as M, Naomie Harris as Miss Moneypenny, and Ben Whishaw as Q.  There is also still speculation that Chiwetel Ejiofor is the frontrunner to play the villain, now that's awesome casting.

Bond 24 hits theatres on October 23, 2015 in the UK, and November 6, 2015 in the US.

One of my most anticipated films of 2015. Loved Skyfall, it is my favorite Bond film (Casino Royale a close second). The story, cinematography, villain (Bardem), and action were all top notch. I am very excited to see where they take Bond from here.

Looking forward to this

Can't wait, I thought Skyfall was brilliant. Mendes did a great job of injecting new blood into the franchise while staying true to the character. Hope the next one is just as good.

Skyfall is up there in the top 3 Bond movies.

What they did with Skyfall amazed me. I never had so much fun watching Bond in theaters. The action was well choreographed, the set designs and cinematography was beautiful and the story actually involved a REAL Bond style villain.

Considering that Skyfall was such a good mixture of classic Bond and the modern Craig era; it is good to hear that Mendes doesn't feel it necessary to reinvent himself in Bond 24. As a Bond fan it is hard for me to deny the fact that some entries in the franchise can only be described as less than stellar (Moore era I'm looking at you!). Therefore, I'm loving the fact that Skyfall's style will be reproduced, and look forward to seeing where they take the characters next.

Maybe, Bond 24 goes into Bond's past some more and touches on the truth of how his parents died (it was indicated that it was just a car accident, or was it? Not to mention it may or may not have some involvement with MI6). Sorry, I'm just throwing random thoughts around. As much as I liked Skyfall, it felt like a mish-mash of 2-3 plotlines/themes that would have worked as well standalone Bond movies, and this is probably one of them

Loved Skyfall

I'm sure Mendes and team have a great story in mind that won't tread the old waters of Quantum of Solace (the only direct continuation of any Bond film), so the whole notion of answering some unanswered questions in Bond 24 will probably place the proper closing chapter on Bond's grief of M and the whole issue with M16 to begin with. I just hope the QUANTUM organization makes a return at some point.

Geez, didn't any of you guys like Skyfall??

It was brilliant! The action was top-notch, the soundtrack was fantastic, the cinematography was gorgeous, it was emotional and satisfying, the winks and nods to the more classic Bond films from the past were the perfect way to celebrate 50 years of Bond, and we finally got to see a wise-cracking, witty, grizzled, experienced Bond after the extremely droll Quantum of Solace. I for one am not all that interested in that storyline at all, and I'm glad Skyfall was more or less a standalone film.

It was James Bond to the very core.

That's the problem with today's audiences; if a film is actually well-made and happens to be enjoyed by a staggeringly large number of people, it's immediately regarded as "overrated" by the internet fanboy legions. Or perhaps the word itself is a bit overused these days.

Anyway, it's nice that the usual lineup of MI6 folks are returning, but I'd love to see the Quantum organization come back into play as well. I was hoping we'd see Mr. White make his way up the power structure and become

I was hoping we'd see Mr. White make his way up the power structure and become the arch-villain for Craig's last outing, but I'm not going to hold my breath. And hopefully Jeffrey Wright will make his way back in too, since he's been the best Felix we've had yet.

o:

The James Bond movies are about him fighting larger than life villains. The less M, Moneypenny and Q I see the better. The reason why I didn't like Skyfall was because it was all about M and that's it. It was quite boring.

Damn I was hoping a return to Casino Royale in tone/feel and the return of Quantum. Also I hope we'll see the return of the iconic slash memorable slash standout henchman we havent seen since Die Another Day and (probably shouldnt hold my breath) at least a couple of Bond gadgets. At the very least the watch

who the hell is this "Iconic" henchman you speak of from "Die another Day?" Are you talking about "Live and Let Die?"

Skyfall is overrated and rightfully so. I'm looking forward to see how the characters are affected by the events in the aforementioned Skyfall.

I would also like to see a follow - up on the terrorist organization Quantum.

Skyfall was incredibly overrated. One of the dumbest Bond movies since the Roger Moore 80's. But at least those were intentionally campy. This one took all the ridiculousness seriously.

Seriously! There were WAY too many coincidences going on like how would Bardem's character be ready for Bond to capture him on his own island and how could he know where Bond was going to catch up to him in the train station so he could've set up a bomb to explode and throw a train at Bond so he could escape. Mendes said that he was using the Dark Knight as inspiration and I say he failed miserably.

Well, wouldn't you say that Bond is a British Version of Bruce Wayne? And that Bond is Batman without the suit. Action Wayne. Too many coincidences to be real? If there are too many coincidences, than it is too good to be real and that's why it is a movie.
