Sam Raimi is not happy with 'Spider-Man 4' script. Might push to 2012!

Jan. 5, 2010by: Niki Stephens

Another stall in the SPIDER-MAN franchise.

Seems that Sam Raimi is having issues with the script for the fourth film. Actually, he hates it. So, it's back to the drawing board for writer Alvin Sargent, who wrote 2 & 3. Why don't they just ditch Sargent? Oh...that's right, he's married to the film's producer.

This all started with an e-mail that was sent out to the special effects crew for the movie. Deadline Hollywood's Nikki Finke posted the e-mail that was received on December 11th:

Hey there--

We were just notified that our schedule is pushing. We will NOT be starting as planned. Iím terribly sorry for this news, and I hope this email reaches you in time to find other options. We do not know how long we are pushing, and we will not know until mid-January. By mid-January, we will be told how long the push is, whether it be 2 weeks, 2 months, or something else. The studio has every intention of making the movie, but we no longer have a confirmed start date.

Again, Iím terribly sorry, but Sam Raimi has story issues [that] need to be resolved before we are ready to shoot.

Feel free to call me if you have any questions.

VFX Team

Sony denied a delay according to MTV. However, Finke's major inside sources say that Raimi isn't ready to roll until he gets a good script. I respect his decision. He doesn't want to put out a total shit bomb.

This is turning into a disaster. Is it time to walk Raimi?

Extra Tidbit: I don't want to be sick of SPIDER-MAN, but the shit this franchise goes through is ridiculous. Spidey deserves better. DAMN THE MAN RAIMI! SAVE THE EMPIRE!

P.S. If Raimi wants to do the fans a favor, he should go and make Evil Dead 4 before making this. How long would it take? 6 months? For a low budget fun sequel that he's PROMISED the fans for almost 20 years? He could of let the fans enjoy a Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash film, that was extremely close to being made, but then he wouldn't give up the rights to New Line for the character, when he was never going to make a sequel to begin with! The guy is an asshole for that alone. What else did the

And because of his little temper tantrum, he made Venom into an embarassment by having the Venom Saga equate to a dance number. I regret wanting to see Venom so bad after how bad he was butchered. But thank God Sandman was done justice. Cuz after-all, he's a total fan favorite. Thug/Bank Robber character transformed into Uncle Ben's killer because he happens to be Raimi's favorite villian in the comics. Raimi can seriously suck it.

GO RAIMI!

I respect Sam Raimi and I'm glad he's fighting with the studio. The guy wants to make the movie the way he wants to make it and correct past mistakes he was forced into essentially making. This one is going to be the real Spider-Man 3 movie. Not some Avi Arad bullshit.

stick with these guys!

i mean, a spidey reboot would be acceptable, but i have faith that raimi and co can salvage the franchise. i mean, spider-man 2 was freakin awesome. so their record is 2-1. that's still over .500. i'm willingto let them do one more.

it's gonna happen. ok? i'm sick of people complaining about the third one, and spidy not getting a reboot. you all would probably want a "dark spider-man" directed by christopher nolan starring christian bale as spider-man.... don't you... don't you

I'd rather never see this done than go through Spider-Man 3 again. It was terrible watching it as a director, I've watched and studied Raimi's work enough to know his heart wasn't in it.

Spidey 4

Looks like they're being careful with this one and are trying to deliver a bigger and better Spidey film, if that's the case, I'll be patient and wait.

Fuck.

I was really hoping Raimi and the cast would throw in the towel after the third one. Why don't they just let someone else take over? I'd like to see something different. New director. New actors.

who cares? the franchise died with # 3.

the franchise was destroyed with the third film. at this point, it's a matter of what you do with the corpse. cremation vs. standard burial.

Agreed with AmazSpiderman1 and Rogue428..

Raimi has probably nothing new to give. His plots circle around the same weepy things. I say let him use Vulture as long as he is directing, so we can get a kick ass fifth movie with new director and Lizard.

I hope we get that too. I wish Raimi would just quit now and leave the franchise in more capable hands. I'd like to see a darker Spiderman movie,(with the lizard) which we'll never get with Raimi in charge.

We shall sell no wine before it's time

The post title is an Orson Welles quote. (And, yes, "wine" could be "whine" in reference to Sony, Raimi, or Parker, ho-ho).
What would master Orson say? A delay might be a good delay. Currently, 2011 has Spider-Man in May, Thor and Green Lantern in June, and Captain America in July. We fanboys shall see every one of those films. But, would the general public? Cap deserves his lettuce in July; it's the American way.

HEAR ME OUT

Obviously we all know it would be great to reboot and Maguire Raimi and Sony all kind of suck and it would be awesome if Marvel got the rights back but that's not happening any time soon. Now this is going to seem odd and I'm sure some will say it sucks but I'd like to see a Jason Reitman directed Spider-Man and maybe Anton Yelchin in the lead. I want Spider-Man in high school for a whole trilogy or college one of the two not a married Peter Parker. Also no one will probably agree at all with

Last word Batman & Robin was trying to be a tribute to the Adam West Burt Ward series. Still sucked horrible but at least you have an idea what they were aiming for.

No sam raimi please

While i enjoyed the first 2 movies i would like for someone else to take over, some fresh blood. A lot of bad scenes from part 3 were his ideas so stop blaming everyone but raimi. He had some very bad scenes in part 1 and 2 also(In 1 when people start throwing things at the goblin and in 2 on the train everything but the action. And i really cant stand another annoying Dunst. Leave avatar jc bring on your Spidermans...

Not enough musical numbers?

Is that the problem? Not enough crying? Not enough emo? Not enough retardedness? Spidey 2 was one of my favorite movies that year (and it still holds up). Spidey 1 was great! After Spidey 3, emo-parker, suit falling from the sky right next to him, dancing, musical numbers, the sandman falling into an open-air physics experiment which is completely uncontrolled ('probably just a bird...nevermind scientific results...fire it up!')... I want to see Raimi walk. In my mind, his attachment is

Well, this could be a good thing, but if the fourth comes out and it does suck, not all is lost. Who thought after "Batman and Robin", we'd get "Batman Begins" and "Dark Knight"? While I may not agree with the immediate reboots some of these movies are getting, the one thing Batman has taught us, there's no absolute nails in the coffin. Seriously, after "Batman and Robin" (those guys must have been on some SERIOUS drugs while making that thing), anything can be salvaged....

This is all Raimi's fault...

The problems with the plot of Spider-Man 3 were Raimi's ideas, and I'm pretty sure the reason this script is getting held up is his fault too. What the guy wants to see in a Spider-Man flick is the total opposite of what all the fans want to see. Who wanted to see Sandman as a main villian, or worse yet turned into the most important villian in Spider-Man's history by him killing Uncle Ben? Who wanted to see Venom on screen for only 10 minutes and then obliverated? Who wanted the Green Goblin

These were all Raimi's ideas, and they were the reason's Spider-Man 3 was a disapointment. Now he supposedly wants Vulture to be the main villian, who is another B-list character. I'm not suprised if the studio wants a better villian in the lead, but Raimi is stuck doing soup opera Spider-Man plots with love triangles (in every damn film) and trying to make his personal favorite villians into the most important of the series.

3 wasn't necessarily all of his fault, he didn't have any intention to put Venom in and if he was, Raimi wanted Eddie Brock to become Venom by the end and Venom would have the fourth film. I agree, though, with the flying snowboarder comment and the emo dance scene screamed WTF. Raimi did have a hand in the mess that was 3, but, it wasn't all him. I think Vulture could work. Scarecrow was a B-list Batman villian and look how that turned out.

You have no idea what you are saying. Sam Raimi didn't want venom in Spiderman 3 but was forced to put him in the movie by the studio. That's why Venom was completely butchered in that movie. He originally wanted Vulture and Sandman but the studio felt vulture wasn't as marketable as Venom ( which makes sense i guess) but the story ended up being stupid. And btw in case you're not aware Sony studio wants Black cat as a villain in Spiderman and create a love triangle again so don't blame Raimi.

Why is this terrible?

The best thing for Raimi to do right now is make sure they can get a solid, if not great, script to shoot with. Most, if not all, the problems with Spider-Man 3 can be rooted back to its script. I'm just happy the studio cares enough to let Raimi do his thing, instead of rushing another crapfest at us.

How is a movie being pushed back - for whatever reason - a disaster? This type of crap writing goes on here way too much.

Raimi knows that after Spiderman 3 this film must kick unbelievable ass. As tough of a decision as all that probably is I'm glad he's taking the time to resolve the story issues before lensing this bad boy. Taking time to work on the script is never ever a bad thing especially when you have such a behemoth franchise on your shoulders. I will remain an optimist and hope for the best because Spiderman 2, to this day, is one of the best comic adaptations/movies ever made.
