Sam Raimi starts shooting Oz the Great and Powerful, now with full plot synopsis

07.26.2011

I sort of wish that Sam Raimi was doing that World of Warcraft movie that was being talked about for so long, instead of this WIZARD OF OZ prequel, OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL, that sounds...strange to say the least.

Filming has now begun on the project, which is set to be released in 2013. With that announcement comes this official plot synopsis that gives us a better look at the story.

Oz The Great and Powerful imagines the origins of L. Frank Baum’s beloved character, the Wizard of Oz. When Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he’s hit the jackpot—fame and fortune are his for the taking—that is until he meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone’s been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity—and even a bit of wizardry—Oscar transforms himself not only into the great and powerful Wizard of Oz but into a better man as well.

I still think Franco is a rather weird choice here, as Robert Downey Jr. and the trickster showman seemed like a much more obvious choice. But who can say no to that lovely witch trio right? This is going to be something, that's for sure.

Extra Tidbit: Will we see a lion, tin man or scarecrow cameo?

Not going to say Franco is a great choice or anything but I disagree with Downey Jr. also. I dunno why but when I think of this role Paul Giamatti comes to mind....maybe I'm crazy.

So what tone/genre are they going for with this movie. Is it a kids movie, adventure movie, or Oz for the twilight crowd? Based on the various synopsi (is that a word?) I've read it seems like it could be either one. Until I know the answer, I'm indifferent to this film.

Extra Tidbit: No, cause this is a prequel and the Wizard in the Wizard of Oz story was well into his 60's. I guess I can see the Tin Man or Tik-Tok from Return to Oz being in this but that's even still kind of a stretch for me.
I have no idea what to make of this movie, I'm a Franco fan, especially when he's in comedy mode which it sounds like, but, Kunis seems too modern an actress to make me believe she's a witch in a fantastical world that mirrors 1930's earth. I still don't even understand

I still don't even understand why they're doing this instead of a straight up adaptation of the first novel. Yeah, the movie from 39 is a classic, but Frank L.Baum's stories are so much more than dated special effects, little people and musical numbers.

I'm down with franco

but I'm NOT down with Kunis... I just can't see her fitting in here at ALL, and I don't care how hot she is right now like most people do, I don't get it and I'm not on that bandwagon, so no thanks.

However I'll still be watching it simply because, even though the story sounds strangely uninteresting -- it's still Raimi.

I'm with you, man. She's got a cute face, but I'm not on that bandwagon either, and I'm CERTAINLY not feeling that annoying screech of a voice she has. Granted we'll both catch hell for that, but, whatever.

On the upside, Raimi's one of my favorite directors and I'm interested in anything he does.
