Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana are officially back for Avatar sequels

01.14.2014

Here's a big surprise to no one.

Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana are back for the AVATAR sequels. The films will be shot back to back which made for a bigger commitment for the actors to sign on for. It's not simply a trilogy, it's a quad. Stephen Lang was already locked on to reprise his role as the baddie, Miles Quaritch.

Cameron will be assissted by not one but three writers: Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, and Shane Salerno. What do we know about the plot of the next three films? Back in December, the director said this:

It was very Jake-centric. His story seen through his eyes. We spread it around quite a bit more as we go forward. It's really the story of his family, the family that he creates on Pandora. His extended family. So think of it as a family saga like 'The Godfather.

I liked the visuals and 3D effects of the film more than the story. At times the story was a little corny for me, and kept reminding me of POCAHONTAS and DANCES WITH WOLVES. Yes, I know everyone says that but it's true.

AVATAR 2 hits theaters December 2016.

Like Skyfall

Reminds me of when people big up Skyfall as one of the best bonds, when really it was just a dark knight home alone rip off. I know Honest trailer said it. But its true.

I wish Cameron would just move on to some original stuff. I'm sure the films will be more than decent but Cameron sticking to just Avatar gets old quick.

Why do people act like being reminded of Pocahontas and Dances with Wolves is a bad thing? Films remind me of other films all the time. Gravity reminded me of Apollo 13. Her reminded me a lot of Electric Dreams. For Christ sakes, most movies that come out now are remakes. So why is Avatar the one film people latched onto to pretend that having similarities to another story is a crime?

Totally fucking agree..
Somewhere along the line it became cool to hate on this film. I don't know one person in the real world that hates this movie. Almost every movie made takes their stories from previous films. Titanic is basically West Side Story which in it self is Romeo and Juliet. It's not the story you pick to tell but how you tell it.

I'm not against sequels, I just hope there is an actual story to tell to make them worthwhile. That "plot description" above doesn't say anything about how Cameron plans to continue the story in another film, much less 3.

I didn't mind Avatar as a vehicle to showcase the technology that had been developed for it and it is an excellently-made film, but this sequel seems like the kind of movie that audiences get tired of years before it is even released. Also, I hope there's a proper explanation for how Quaritch survived, you know, getting stabbed in the chest with 5 foot long arrows.

Easy. Make him appear in flashbacks or be tissue regenerated, Elysium-style since (as I found out recently) both movies are set in the same year.

"So think of it as a family saga like 'The Godfather."

Lol...is Jake going to wake up in his bed one morning and find his Banshee's head at his feet? Cause I'd pay good money for that.

No, they'll find his cousin on earth, played by Sofia Copolla and she'll get an avatar body, and he'll fuck her in the back of a restaurant. I think that's what they meant by The Godfather.

Don't underestimate Cameron

People seem to underestimate what his films will do. Remember Titanic was said to be extremely troubled by cost overruns. Avatar was totally unknown as to what it was until it came out. Both went on to be box office juggernauts. I liked the first one and the 3d technology that was created for it and I'll go see the next one when it is released.

I enjoyed the first one, but I'm not really looking forward to any of the sequels. Cameron could be doing so much more with his time.
