Samuel L. Jackson says he doesn't do much in The Avengers: Age of Ultron

03.26.2014

With CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER not hitting theaters for a few weeks, numerous theories have surfaced which may indicate the demise of Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury character. With two more movies left on his Marvel contract, it seems highly unlikely that the eyepatched superspy would be written out of the Marvel Universe so abruptly, but crazier things have happened. But, with Jackson seen on set filming THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON, I would say those theories can be put to rest.

Still, with THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON cast ballooning, some characters will be seeing less screen time, one of which will be Fury himself. Jackson said as much to Yahoo UK.

“I’m not doing so much, I don’t think. It’s another one of those ‘people who have powers fighting people who have powers’ [movies],” he explained. “There’s not a lot I could do except shoot a gun.”

It remains to be seen if Fury will be getting a solo film with the remaining movies on Samuel L. Jackson's contract. While fans would love to see that, it may not be as sure a thing as having a legitimate super-powered hero in the forefront. But, if the early buzz on CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER holds true, maybe a Marvel movie with a gritty, retro feel still holds appeal for a mass audience.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER opens April 4, 2014 and THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON hits May 1, 2015.

My guess from what I'm reading about The Winter Solider his role is diminished in the universe so that seems logical. I hope he gets at least a few minutes of screen time and maybe an action sequence.

If Sam Jackson doesn't want to do much in Avengers 2 then he needs to get Iron Man to come to my daughters birthday party. He has to mingle too, not just do a fly over.

He unleashes some "Fury" in Cap 2, at least

I'm glad he had a moment to "shine" in The Winter Soldier, but in the end he is basically a figurehead this late in Fury's career, so he doesn't HAVE to do much "action".

I'd love to see a blaxploitation tinged Fury solo flick about his days of kicking ass in the field. Jackson should play his younger self wearing the wig from Pulp Fiction.

He does have a good deal to do in The Winter Soldier. I think it's the first time in all the MCU movies Nick Fury gets a full action scene to himself. No, firing that rocket launcher in The Avengers doesn't totally count.

One of Jackson's condition's on the first Avengers was that he never had to run. Whedon got him to run a little bit, but Jackson said he wasn't happy about it. So if you refuse to run in an action movie, don't expect to ever do much more then deliver dialog.

Guess that debunks that small rumour that he dies in Winter Soldier. I foresee Age of Ultron will be a ton of action and since The Avengers have been assembled once already, Fury would take a back seat here.

This isnt that surprising. The biggest thing his character has ever done is stop the first missle heading towards New York City. So to hear this news is consistent with his character.

Would love to see an origins film though of Fury, Hawkeye, and Black Widow and how they all came together with Shield.

Fury has places to appear....

But getting away from SHIELD would be a good thing for Ultron (although maybe returning for a Thanos film). He has no place in Thor, but is fun when teamed with RDJ. He also works great with Cap as someone who is an authority, but one Cap doesn't fully trust anymore.

He won't fit into any of the Phase 2 films. Ant Man, Dr Strange....those films happen away from SHIELD and Fury would just be a distraction. If they don't want to burn out his character, they need to only use him in a film

'solo' movie

I'd love to see a spinoff movie with Nick Fury... and one with Black Widow... and one with Hawkeye... but ONLY if it was all wrapped into one movie.

Call the movie SHIELD or something, do a quick run through of Nick Fury, his origin/how he came to start (or lead) SHIELD in a montage in the opening credits, then have the movie be about how he recruited both Black Widow and Hawkeye (as well as their origins) and have it climax with that 'Budapest incident' referenced by Black Widow to Hawkeye

They could even have Fury with them both in that battle.

The budget would be lower since it wouldn't be a crazy epic set piece filled movie with powers, and not only does it have the Marvel banner to work off of, but it also has three A-list stars co-headlining the movie 'Oscar nominee Jeremy Renner', 'Oscar nominee Scarlett Johansson' (well, for her singing, heh) and 'Oscar Nominee Samuel L Jackson'. That's just money in the bank, plus it's probably THE most vital and needed Marvel movie they could come up with -- these three characters keep showing up in these movies, yet we know next to nothing about any of them and still have no idea of their relationships with one another, where they come from, why we should care about them, etc. with them being the 3 (most) human, grounded characters of the bunch it's a great opportunity. I just hope it doesn't end up being a missed one.

If I could pick a director for the project I'd probably go with Peter Berg, having the movie in the vein of Lone Survivor and especially The Kingdom.

I've never heard of any one asking for a Nick Fury solo movie. Are these conversations actually happening?

The last shot of 'The Avengers' was Stark rebuilding Stark Tower as the de facto Avengers Mansion. While they came together as a team, they also realized they didn't want to be SHIELD's errand boys, especially in Stark's and Banner's case. And I'm guessing Cap & Black Widow will have followed suit by the end of Winter Soldier.

So I expect Avengers 2 will be about them coming together outside of SHIELD. Fury will be a minor player.
