Sandra Bullock to be the villainous lead in Despicable Me spinoff film, Minions

Feb. 11, 2013by:

Universal Pictures has announced that none other than Sandra Bullock will lend her lungs to the DESPICABLE ME spinoff, MINIONS.  Bullock will play "Scarlet Overkill, a stylish bad-ass super-villain who is (what else?) bent on world domination."

Here's the lowdown on the film (from Deadline):

This spinoff establishes that Minions have existed since the beginning of time, in service of history’s most ambitiously evil villains. Through their lovable ineptitude, Minions have managed to thwart and ultimately kill all of those bad guys. This story picks up in the 1960s, before they hench-ed for Gru. After wiping out all their masters, the Minions fall into a collective depression and three of them set out to seek a new evil master. They wind up at a villain convention, where they compete for the right to be henchmen for Scarlet Overkill, whose Audrey Hepburn-like high style appearance belies her world domination ambition and her aspirations to become the world’s first female super-villain.

Sounds pretty fun, actually, and I like the idea of the MINIONS having a number of evil "leaders" throughout time.  Talk about opening up your franchise doors, eh?  Truthfully, the MINIONS are the most fun aspect of the DESPICABLE ME series, so I'm down with seeing the little yellow, pill-shaped, gibberish-speaking creatures take center stage in their own feature.  Bullock is an inspired choice as well, as she's demonstrated her comic talents many times over.

The MINIONS will next be seen in this summer's DESPICABLE ME 2, out July 3, 2013, where they will likely be the best thing there as well, while their own feature, MINIONS, is set for December 19, 2014

Extra Tidbit: Do you think the Minions work better on their own or do you think they work better as side players?

The Minions were the funniest thing in Despicable Me

but I don't see them headlining a film. They're the comic relief, not the leads. As for Sandra Bullock, I have no idea how she'll do as a voice actor, but Hollywood is littered with otherwise great actors who died in the voice booth (Brad Pitt, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Reese Witherspoon, etc.).

It's safe to say Al Pacino will probably make for a much cooler-sounding villain when Despicable Me 2 rolls around.

Minions:

I'm sure kids find them funny, but honestly I find them annoying.

ehhh

Ms. Bullock, You are cool in my book for the most part, but lending your voice to Despicable Me spin-off is not the way to go. I would rather see some childhood actor to the part. In some ways I think Ms. Bullock should wait for bigger cartoon movie to lend her voice to instead.

Wow, this is going to be bad...

I grew up with spongebob, I was the generation that saw the first 3-4 seasons from like 1999 to 2002 before it got old. It was funny until I realized the show treated its audience like idiots. They could just mumble through 15 minutes and it would get laughs. When Despicable Me came out, I was surprised that the best part was the gibbering idiots. Now they are making a movie with nothing but the yellow idiots and goddess Sandra Bullock and kids will go nuts for it. I am scared for the future

I am scared for the future because being a mumbling idiot is now the only thing kids respond to and want to aspire to be.
