Saoirse Ronan joins the cast of The Hobbit

Jan. 27, 2011by: Niki Stephens

According to an interview with casting director Ros Hubbard, Saoirse Ronan has joined the cast of THE HOBBIT.

During a sit down with The Irish Film & Television Network, this is what was said about the casting that gave the tip off:

IFTN: I wondered if there was any coincidence between the large Irish presence (Aidan Turner, James Nesbitt and Saoirse Ronan) in the film and the fact that it was you guys casting . . .

Ros Hubbard: Yes, there was quite a lot of influence there! We had been wanting to to put Aidan Turner into film for a long time because he had done an awful lot of TV and we told him when we finally met him We are going to concentrate in getting you into the movies. I didnt think it would be as big as this. But how great for him.

And Jimmy is thrilled to bits, his whole family have gone out, it is just wonderful. And working with Peter Jackson is like working with a family. So theyll have a great time. Saoirses family will go too, everyone is very close and very loving on those sorts of jobs. Its not like typical studio movies at all.

The last time the actress teamed up with Jackson was on THE LOVELY BONES in 2009. There's no word on what role Ronan will be playing in THE HOBBIT. As we reported earlier in the day, production is slightly delayed so that Jackson can recover from stomach surgery.

Extra Tidbit: Hubbard also did casting on a little show called FATHER TED. If you haven't seen it, you need to do yourself a favor. This is one of my favorite scenes.

Maybe she was the backup plan for Legolas before they got Bloom back.

Could be Aragorn's Mother

If not an Elf (which seems a good top choice), then key people in the timeline that need casting, in my order of guesses would be:

Aragorn's Mother
Frodo's Mother
Legolas's Mother (back to being an Elf)
Townsperson of Laketown

My guess is she's gonna be an elf. She looks like a young Cate Blanchett in that pic.

I can only imagine she's an elf. Is there anybody else she could play in that 2nd film that ties Hobbit to LOTR?

I'm definitely thinking she'll be an elf

but the question becomes: which one? One of the Rivendell elves or in Mirkwood? And will they bring back Bret McKenzie? ;)

Good casting. She'll probably be an elf.

I really wanted to like The Lovely Bones. It was a great visually, but the story kind of sucked. Mark Wahlberg was really good in it and so was Stanley Tucci.

My guess, being that she's pretty, lithe and blond is that she'll be an elf.

No complaints here. She's earned her place in the few films she's done and I think she'd fit in with that crowd pretty well.

Also, she kind of looks like a mix between Evan Rachel Wood, Chloe Sevigny, and Emily Blunt in that pic
