Yesterday afternoon the news broke on Deadline Hollywood that Mickey Rourke had officially signed a deal to star as Whiplash in IRON MAN 2 (though it is noted that the character is a combo of Whiplash and Crimson Dynamo). Later that evening, the news was confirmed and Marvel announced the Rourke news. But lost in the shuffle of the Rourke news was another tidbit from Deadline Hollywood, namely that Scarlett Johansson had also officially signed on to star in IRON MAN 2. And sadly that just negates a lot of the excitement I had over Rourke joining the cast.

Johansson is a fine looking woman, there's no doubt about that, but I just don't get the feeling that she'll be a strong presence as Black Widow. I'm not saying she's a terrible actress, not by any stretch of the imagination. But is she in the league of Downey, Paltrow, Cheadle and Rourke? Not quite. Maybe I got married to the idea of Emily Blunt too quickly and I'm having trouble divorcing myself of that very concept (which was pitch perfect). But as Exhibit A, Johansson reportedly screentested for the Black Widow part back when it was an open gig and was turned down. I feel the same way about this as I did when Jessica Alba was cast as Sue Storm in FANTASTIC FOUR...

I couldn't be more excited about IRON MAN 2 so I hope it all works out. I hope when it hits theaters I'm not staring at the screen wondering what Scarlett Johansson is doing dressed in black leather. I'll trust Jon Favreau, Downey and the rest of the creative team that they know what they're doing. I just wish Emily Blunt was still available.

Extra Tidbit: Like Sam Jackson's, Johansson's deal includes multiple films including THE AVENGERS.

Kinda Off Topic...
I still say Terrence Howard got screwed. As much as I like Cheadle he isn't the right choice to be fucking War Machine. As for ScarJo as Black Widow....WTF? Whoever is in charge of casting for Iron Man is making as many mistakes as they are brilliant choices.

Aren't Jessica Alba and Scarlett Johansen the same person?

That's about how memorable either of them are as a screen presence. I couldn't pick them out of a lineup. Might add Jessica Biel to that list too.

Oh please. She absolutely IS in the same league as Robert Downey Jr, Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle and Mickey Rourke. This is great news.

I can actually see this happening, I guess this is Scarlett’s chance to prove to her audience she's not just a pretty face and she has what it takes to be in an action movie, I'm actually intrigued now and want to see how she does as a big action superhero...but then again who say's she'll be Black Widow and not Ms. Marvel, you never know what they can come up with which I think will be great...

Im with shes a fine looking woman she can fill the suit out nicely, but I dont see her playing a tough chick. I was honestly hoping for either emily Blunt or Eliza Dushku

Bad Choice
She's hot, she'll fill out whatever they stuff her into....but she doesn't have the right presence. Heck, Widow NEEDS to be a tough chick, and Scarlett doesn't have the chops to pull it off. If they are going the Ultimates route she may not be able to carry the femme fatale feel, ya know? However, after watching that tennis flick she was in (ugh, can't...remember..), if given the right...

However, after watching that tennis flick she was in (ugh, can't...remember..), if given the right direction it's possible the Ultimates version of BW could work for her...but only as a character. The second she attempts a Russian accent it'll be Hunt for Red October all over again.

Probly the only actress that I'll overlook poor acting for. I'm pretty stoked about this sequel now, mostly for Rourke though.

Hmm...
I completely agree that she would have been a better Ms. Marvel, but they could have chosen alot worse. Keep in mind that 1. Real life stupidity has no bearing on performance on screen, just look at Bale or Cruise (both fucking divas, but damned good actors) and 2. She was pretty damned good in The Prestige. Also, RDj was not as great an actor as he was back in the day before he got under...

Maybe she'll let out some good acting chops this go around with the influence of all the star power and good directing. Give the girl a chance!

I cant' stand Scarlett Johansson at all. Her "I hate George Bush" speech at the Oscars two years ago was extremely unclassy. Her "I don't believe in monogamy, I think it's stupid" speech that she delivered to Access Hollywood was pretty classless too. Why does hollywood love her anyway? She's an average looking girl to begin with. What's so attractive about crooked teeth anyway?

Have to agree about the Jessica Alba reference. I know these are comic book movies, but that doesn't make casting any less important. It's better to have an unknown actress who can play the part well rather then just cast whoever happens to be the hottest flavor of Hollywood at the time. Just because an actress is attractive doesn't make a film. There's plenty of attractive actresses in...

She will likely do to Iron Man 2 what Katie Holmes did to Batman Begins - destroy every scene she's in. Ah well, at least the baddest motherfucker on the planet is back at Nick Fury. Waitaminute... weren't Sam Jackson and ScarJo together in The Spirit? Oh crap...!

Well you can make anyone look tough on screen. I like Scar.Jo. But this is just terribly miscast. Very disapointed about this. She would be a perfect Ms.Marvel, so it sucks that that will never happen either.

scarlett up against rourke, rdj, cheadle, and paltrow? um, yes. of course. she is one of the best actresses of her generation. there shouldnt' even be a question concerning her acting talents. to compare her with jessica alba is like comparing jake gyllenhaal (great actor of his generation) with dane cook.

seriously?
i am flabbergasted. am i truly seeing a group of 18-30 year-olds upset about the notion of scarjo in tight black leather?

"she's not tough" really truly how would you know? michelle pfiefer didn't have too many "tough" roles, and she was great as catwoman. the truth is, there are not THAT many tough-girl roles out there for women to play, so excuse scarlett if she's hasn't...

and yes, seriously, i concur with mullerlt, what is with the emily blunt love? i also like her and think she would have been fine, but she didnt exactly blow me away with her toughness in the devil wears prada and the jane austen book club.

i smell ryan reynolds jealousy...

Well, she's cast, so let's just see how she does.

Is she going to be attempting a fake accent? That could be lame.

At least we'll get to see her in a tight leather costume.

This casting does indeed smack of something mandated by Marvel's movie studio to get a hip name.

MS, I agree with you 100%. I was totally sold on Blunt for this part or even Eliza D. Love me some ScarJo, but not in this role. Unless of course she's playing the character topless. I have to believe the creative geniuses responsible for the 1st IM will realize this is a bad idea and re-cast, otherwise this could hurt part 2. Def another Alba in FF mistake. Sorry ScarJo.....will you still love...

AWFUL CASTING!
Johansson is a 'name' - that's why she was cast (which is stupid considering this is franchise and will make a ton anyway). She is not Black Widow! If she is, then why bother casting people who resemble the comic characters at all? Next they'll get Shia LaBeouf to play Superman!

we will just need to see. i think this is a bad casting. Hell if that wanted her in a marvel film they should cast her as sue storm in the FF reboot. If that happens. i just don't think she can pull Black Widow off.
