Scarlett Johannson gets super powers in the trailer for Luc Besson's Lucy

Apr. 2, 2014by: Alex Maidy

Talk about a surprise. When the first image from Luc Besson's LUCY was revealed, I was expecting the movie to be about Scarlett Johannson taking on a role along the lines of Zoe Saldana's lead in COLOMBIANA or Keira Knightely in DOMINO: an ass-kicking babe with an axe to grind. Instead, LUCY looks like a cross between a superhero movie and the Bradley Cooper flick LIMITLESS.

Scarlett opens the trailer as a timid call girl who becomes an unwilling drug mule. But, then something happens and the drugs turn her into a superhuman killing machine. I can honestly say that I did not see this trailer coming and it looks like one hell of a fun ride.

Set in a futuristic world that is run by the mob, street gangs, drug addicts and corrupted cops, Lucy (Scarlett Johansson), a woman living in Taipei, Taiwan, 2069 AD, works as a drug mule for the mob. The drug she inadvertently takes goes into her system, changing her into a metahuman. She can absorb knowledge instantaneously, is able to move objects with her mind and can't feel pain and other discomforts.

Now, Luc Besson has produced countless action movies in the last twenty years like THE TRANSPORTER and TAKEN series as well as schlocky fare LOCKOUT and TAXI, but LUCY looks to be a return to the time of science fiction filmmaking he hasn't done since THE FIFTH ELEMENT. I am now very excited to see LUCY, especially with the great supporting roles from OLDBOY's Choi Min-sik and the always top notch Morgan Freeman.

LUCY hits theaters on August 8, 2014.

To the people whining about the 10%

You are both right AND horribly wrong. We do use 100% of our brains. Sections devoted to bodily functions. Emotions. Urges. Etc make up our brain. However we only use 10% for reasoning and conscious thinking and problem solving etc. thats because that section of the brain is used for that. Now if 100% of the brain was used for that, the advantages would be "limitless" (pun intended) but thats not how the brain works. They say alot of the mathematical and scientific geniuses in our history have

They say alot of the mathematical and scientific geniuses in our history have access to 11-12% of the brain which give them that genius edge. But in the end accessing more than 10% (or 11-12 if you are gifted) is impossible as the other 90% are biologically linked to whatever their task is. So yes. We only use 10% of our brain after breathing. Heart pumping. Memories. Emotions etc are all taken out of the equation. But in the end. This is SCIENCE FICTION.

Wrong. We do NOT use only 10% for reasoning and higher order cognition. There is no evidence to support this. If you can provide such evidence, I will eat my words.

The brain is split up into 2 hemispheres and 3 lobes. right hemisphere and left hemisphere as well as the frontal lobe (front) the parietal lobe and the occipital lobe. Each of these 3 sections have subsections within them. Such as the superior frontal sulcus, the precebtral sulcus and gyrus. The postcentral gyrus and sulcus and.....well I could go on. See you just decided to swing your dick with a poster who has taken two separate degrees in psychology. Criminal and general. You see the brain

Your cerebelum controls coordination/balance etc and your frontal lobe and a few spots scattered around the brain controls thought. Behavior. Reasoning etc. how do you like your words? Raw? With a side order of a bowl of dicks? Have a nice day. Also any of this information is available to you on the worldwide web. With a little effort you could have seen that instead of pretending to be a smart ass little punk.

I want to know more ab this. There's a few things that jump out at me from the little I know - it doesn't seem like enhancing the percentage of your brain would give you powers to knock down a room full of ppl (I get super intelligence and strength and I like that she said she felt a connection to every living thing and was navigating through like numbers), do the dealers not have any idea what these drugs can do? Or in combination? (And I guess the plot will prolly end up with them doing it

Or in combination? (And I guess the plot will prolly end up with them doing it to themselves, though I hope it doesn't), she sure seemed to figure it out quickly rather than being fucked up or scared, but I guess that makes sense if you got really "smart" really quick. The only other thing is that I hope the action is grounded and fairly realistic. That'll ruin it. But I actually have really high hopes for this, and I think this movie has a lot of other possibilities riding it - specifically more action movies with female stars, wether they are original characters, or Wonder Woman and so many other superheroes. And with scarjo's success with Marvel, and what I've heard is a really good job in the really good Cap sequel, there is no actress better to make this breakthrough right now, and maybe no better director. If he can bring even some of the fifth element or Leon, this will be great, and I hope it'll open the doors for studios to try other female lead action movies. But again, I hope the action is fairly realistic. Right when the drugs hit her and she kicked the guy into all those flips and was able to grab that chair or table with the gun, those scenes looked a little on the far fetched side. But I guess she's strong as fuck. Anyway, still really hoping this one knocks it out of the part instead of more of the b films Besson has been involved with lately

This got my attention

I agree with Jedd, the "10% of your brain" clich needs to die but this looks like a very cool flick. ScarJo has made some solid choices in film roles ever since she hit the A list and I'm interested in seeing how this plays out.

I was interested when I heard ScarJo would be starring as a kickass Besson femme. I didn't know that it would be a sci-fi flick, or that Morgan Freeman would be in it. The "10% of your brain" cliche aside, this looks very cool.

NO NO NO NO NO

We do not use only 10% of our brains you dumb fucking cunts!!!
Why does this bullshit piece of pseudoscientific garbage keep reappearing?! It adds nothing to the proceedings except propagate ignorance. They could just as easily say, "What if we could enhance the capabilities of the human brain beyond our wildest imaginations?" Same idea, only not blatantly false.

Finally Classic Besson Returns

Love Besson. However he has not directed a good movie arguably since 1997s fifth element (could argue 1999 Joan of Arc). Just check out IMDB. His best movies are The Big Blue. Nikita. Leon. Fifth Element. Since then a bunch of subpar euro movies and the arthur series and the entirely forgettable The family. This is a prime candidate for movie jail article. His producing credits however are unbelievable. Tons of work. In the end. Im glad im seeing this being in line with his Nikita/Leon/Element

No way. "Leon: The Professional" alone makes him untouchable by the Movie Police. Go Luc Go!
And The Family was a good film despite what the majority of people think. How can you not like a film that has DeNiro watching himself in Goodfellas?

The title should say "Scarlett Johannson gets superpowers... of every single person on earth". The 10% myth is so old it's insulting they would make another movie about it.

What did we learn, drug dealers?

Maybe it's not a great idea to use drug mules when smuggling a drug that can turn anyone into an overpowered being, capable of doing just about anything.

Just saying.

Looks fun but the concept is so dumb. It looks like the idea that every kid comes up with when they hear this, "you only use 10%" of your brain BS and don't bother to research it.

uh...

This looks like good fun...a rental at best. But can we stop with the stupid 10% trope? It's been universally accepted that we use 100% of our brains. The only time we use less than that is when we're resting or sleeping. Seriously, it's so aggravating and silly.

What I read is that we use 100% of the brain, but only 10% of its entirety at a time.

@miguel_montes
Close, but not exactly. We use 100% of the connections in our brains that are established and strengthened during development. However, not all of those connections, nor regions of the brain, are firing simultaneously. There are different states, especially comparing sleep or meditation with being active, mentally or physically. However, it's not that we use only 10%, specifically, at a time. We use varying amounts depending on the state.

Hmm, but our brain builds new neural pathways to accommodate things learned. So wouldn't it be accurate to say we don't use 100% of our brain's potential?

Well that certainly looks ambitious. It looks a bit cyberpunkish, a bit like Snowcrash or something. Luc Besson keeps on rolling them out, nice.
