Scarlett Johansson thought The Avengers would be a disaster

Dec. 20, 2013by: Niki Stephens

In the latest issue of Total Film, Scarlett Johansson confessed that she didn't think that THE AVENGERS had a chance when she first heard about the premise. Her confession is actually really cute:

The idea of it is ridiculous! When they told me that was the next step, I said, 'Oh, no! That is a disaster! You saw Thor, you saw Captain America, you saw Iron Man - those things don't go together!'

They kind of do go together but most fans were wondering how such a massive ensemble would work out. I'd say it was a home run. THE AVENGERS never seems like it's trying to hard. For a first real attempt at something like this, Joss Whedon set the bar fairly high.

When asked if she knew anything about THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON at the time of the interview Johansson hadn't received her copy of the script:

We're so out of the loop. I'm expecting delivery of the script any day now. When it comes you can guarantee It'll be read in 25 minutes.

She wouldn't be able to tell us much anyway. Also, I think she turned out to be a great Black Widow. I was never against her playing the character, and have no issues with the lack of a Russian accent. It would have been cool to see a screen test for Emily Blunt though. Girl is kicking some serious ass in the EDGE OF TOMORROW trailer.

THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON will release May 1, 2015.

I still envy that our very own Jimmy O got to experience this moment.

She's awesome and adorable. I was of the same mind. I loved/liked the other Marvel films, but I was skeptical about Avengers working. I ended up loving it though. Even her role was excellent. Btw, what is the context of that little walk and spin she's doing in that last gif?

I confess even though Joss Whedon was directing, prior to seeing any of the trailers I also had doubts about the movie. I thought to myself: "there's no way he can make a balanced movie with so many powerful characters, there's no way." So, I can't blame her for thinking the same and understand her point of view. But then the trailers came out, and THEN the movie. I was so relieved and amazed how Whedon pulled off such a great and fun ride of a movie. Turned out to be my favorite movie of 2012.

Fuhget about it

Horrible as Black Widow IMO but what does it matter. Hopefully she is offed in the next flick and room is made for a more relevant character who can actually pull her own weight in the crew. Really, does it make sense for a person like her to be fighting alongside the rest? Non powers and using 9MM's - makes no sense.

Yeah, everyone knows you can't kill anything with a 9MM.

You know who's even worse? Batman. He has no superpowers either and he doesn't even use any guns! How does he expect to be relevant at all?

9 milli's and sweet titties make for a lethal combination. That one is a freebie, Micheal Bay.

Apparently, you missed when she tricked Loki, the f'ing trickster god. She has done an excellent job at playing Black Widow and making her a great side character. Avengers did a great job of making her more relevant too. They aren't going to off her unless it's a major part of the story, you can be sure of that.

Shonk, I agree. Black Widow was never one of the major players, and thid casting was not good. To use her in the movie, instead of Pym, Vision, Wasp, Scarlet Witch, etc was a mistake.

Morix - Batman has tons of various weapons on him at all times correct? Much stronger - better fighter. Not much of an argument here. Yeah you can kill several things with a 9, but a doped out drug addict is not one of them (seriously ever see a meth head take dozens of rounds before he goes down? unless you hit the bullseye people can withstand multiple shots from a small caliber round like this), let alone a real threat like these guys face. Jason, Iron Man wears one of the deadliest

It's to Joss Whedon's credit that he managed to gel those really different characters into a team and played up the dysfunction just enough. The Avengers was a really well-written movie because he was able to give each character their moment in the sun and because the interactions between all of them felt natural and in continuity with their earlier appearance. Also, thanks for that gif! I'm jealous as all hell of JimmyO too and Favreau's "woooow" expression is hilarious.

Look at Jon Favreau's face in the last Gif. That says it all. Anyway, just the name The Avengers alone is a guaranteed commercial success but Johansson's comment did reflect the tone of the movie - a team of superheroes assembled together is going to be a trainwreck. It did at first but then they got along well in the end.

I remember being pissed when Emily Blunt had to drop out of playing Black Widow in IM2. ScarJo ended up surprising me, especially in The Avengers. She brought her A-game and treated the source material seriously. Hope she greats a solo movie eventually.
