Scarlett Johansson will return as Black Widow in Captain America: Civil War

On top of Robert Downey Jr’s comments on the development of Tony Stark in CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR, we now have confirmation regarding the return of another Avenger for the trilogy capper to the Steve Rogers saga. SlashFilm conducted an interview with directors Joe and Anthony Russo who confirmed we will see Scarlet Johansson return as Black Widow.

If you are like me, you likely assumed that the former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent would appear in CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR simply based on how significant she was to CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER. But, with the addition of Black Panther and Iron Man to the film as well as the recent news that Spider-man would appear as well, the movie is starting to look more like AVENGERS 2.5 than a CAPTAIN AMERICA film. Will Johansson have a significant role or will she be relegated to a sideline player?

It seems like the lines are blurring between character-centric superhero movies and these cross-over event films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With the CIVIL WAR storyline still unknown to us, we will have to assume sides will be drawn and established characters like Black Widow, Falcon, and The Winter Soldier himself will play a part in the Tony vs Steve face-off.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR opens on May 6, 2016.
