School of Rock 2? | Movie News

UPDATE - Variety chimes in today to tell us that Jack Black and Richard Linklater are "attached" to the sequel. Titled SCHOOL OF ROCK: AMERICA ROCKS (groooan), the film will follow Black's Dewey Finn and his class as they take a trip across America. According to the paper, the film will branch out from just rock 'n roll and teach the kids the merits of "blues, rap, country and other genres." So Jack Black doing Notorious BIG and singing "Friends in Low Places"? Black has still not decided on his next project though he still has TROPIC THUNDER and YEAR ONE on the way.

As amusing as SCHOOL OF ROCK was, I think we're all in agreement that we really don't need a sequel. Count ROCK writer Mike White in that group as well. Somewhat ironically, White just turned in a draft of a SCHOOL OF ROCK sequel to Paramount. How does that work? "I'm still, like, crying as I'm writing the script." White told attendees at a Los Angeles Film Festival panel that he was writing the script for a sequel. He described the process like a parent whose child just died - "It's a little too fresh...for me to get into right now." The key, White said, to writing a script you have no interest in writing is to ask yourself, "What is the pleasurable part of this?" I'm assuming he's talking about the boatloads of cash Paramount gave White to look at a script for a SCHOOL OF ROCK sequel (being able to pay your mortgage is pretty pleasurable). White wouldn't (or couldn't) go into details on what exactly a SCHOOL OF ROCK 2 would be about but admitted that he at least knows more about what worked in the first film to help inform his second script. Didn't this story already run on here? I think the only thing new is the first paragraph. I even knew that extra tidbit before I got to it!

I think it's good that White, Linklater, and Black are all returning for this. I'm also alternately pleased and worried that White is so reluctant about this. He should feel half-way bad for "selling out," and yet if he doesn't like doing it, it may turn out to be even worse.

White probably only wrote the script because Paramount probably threatened to get another writer if he disagreed or something. Possibly. Either that or he's just a horribly conflicted human who wants money....I'm going to lean toward the first for now.

I don't care that they're paying him. I just gotta give props to White because what kills me sometimes about disowned sequels is that somebody came in and essentially butchered what the original writer did. And at least he's feeling properly guilty about it. Though, too, I have to ask if that's gonna weigh in on the entertainment value of the movie.



But yeah, "School of Rock" is...

The first film was great!!! Jack black did an amazing job. Who can forget the HOT Sarah Silverman?

I absolutely LOVE the first film. Boo to a sequel which will probably star someone other than Jack Black! And good for Mike White at least owning up to the fact he hates he's writing this.
