Schwarzenegger says he will be a cyborg, not a human, in Terminator 5

06.13.2013

On the heels of the news that TERMINATOR 5 may be heading to Paramount to begin filming in 2014 comes the latest news on the character Arnold Schwarzenegger will play in the latest sequel to the James Cameron classic. While Schwarzenegger has appeared in all four movies so far, his cameo in TERMINATOR: SALVATION was more of a CGI trick instead of an actual appearance. Speculation has been that Schwarzenegger will be playing a human character who serves as the model for the T-800 from the original film, but the man himself set the record straight in an interview with The Arnold Fans:

"In fact, I'm very happy that the studios want me to be in Terminator 5 and to star AS the Terminator, which we start shooting in January and I'm also going to do King Conan - to play that role and also to do another Twins movie. So I feel very proud of that. I feel very happy and I'm looking forward to doing those films."

The explanation for why a cyborg ages may finally be answered in TERMINATOR 5! They explained it away in T2 by saying he was a different model of robot, but it remains to be seen how TERMINATOR 5 will even fit into the grand scheme of the entire franchise. It is good to know Schwarzenegger is back in the spotlight for this film, but I will have to know more about the story before I trust in a James Cameron-free TERMINATOR movie.

Schwarzenegger says TERMINATOR 5 begins filming January 2014, so expect more news soon.

T4 had potential but it was handled horribly by McG. Plus Arnold is too old and other than playing a man to show where skynet got the design of the first terminator. Get a better screen writer and
director and this franchise can be great again.

Ferp

They need to reboot it. Salvation was a step in the right direction. It's going to be more of the same. Unless Cameron gets off his ass, I doubt this will be any good. I was hoping for a Bale and MCG to do it again. I guess I am one of those trolls who liked Salvation.

He's too old. But maybe a CG-artist will replace his body.

Never thought I'd say it, but Twins 2 is the only sequel mentioned in this article that I'm looking forward to seeing.

Will the R-rating be back?
A lot hinges on that.

YAY Arnold is back!

So hopefully this means we're completely ignoring Terminator Salvation.

The question of how a cyborg ages is answered in the first film. It is established that the flesh of the robot behaves like normal human flesh. The Terminator even has to eat to keep the flesh nourished. Only makes sense that the flesh would age.

Still, I don't want this movie.

?

Why do you want to see how Terminators age?

It's that kind of useless answer seeking nonsense that prevents you people from enjoying things like LOST.
Get a grip. Enjoy the movie, and don't ask USELESS questions.

You'll live longer.

I consider T2 to be one of the most perfect action films ever made, but the franchised ended with T2. Everything else feels like a fan film, and no one has been able to recapture what made the first two films so badass.

The first 2 Terminator films are my most beloved films ever. I waited a long time for James Cameron to make T3 and was hoping for it to be set in the future, like the first 2 minutes of T2.

Now there were 3 things which made Terminator/Terminator 2 awesome:
1) James Cameron's direction and script writing
2) Stan Winston
3) Arnold Schwarzenegger

James Cameron is busy with Avatar and Stan Winston is dead (RIP). Arnold has just aged too much and I don't think it's right that they are

T2 was made over 20 years ago and it outclasses T3/T4 in every way! Only if James Cameron is involved can I see a sequel really work.

I'm cool with this!

I posted this on the last Terminator article, but since it's now directly related, thought I would put it here too:

I have no problem with Arnold coming back as a Terminator again in the 5th film. The age isn't really an issue- he is a cyborg, so they could simply explain the aged exterior by stating something along the lines of, "he looks older to be less conspicuous, and draw less attention to himself". When you think about it, it'd be better for the terminator to NOT look like a hulking,

Since he is living tissue over a metal endoskeleton it could be explained that his exterior ages like a human to make him seem more real.

Frankly I don't think any of the Terminator sequels were any good. Even T2 which most folks seem to love, was just more of the same from the first which was brilliant.
Anyway, there's no reason why a Terminator wouldn't age. It's not an android, it's a cyborg. It has human flesh surrounding the metal endoskeleton which would age just like any flesh does.

Nope

The third and fourth films f*ed this franchise up. It wouldn't even work if he was playing the human character that inspired the cyborg. I can't unsee that deleted scene where the human character has a ridiculous fake southern accent. And if he's a cyborg, does he star alongside Christian Bale? Just forget it.

Terminators don't age. Their skin does, because it's human tissue. You can peel the aging skin off a Terminator, and slap a new one on. So the idea with T5 is that the particular unit being portrayed by Arnie hasn't had new skin put on.

I'm guessing the audience will be asked to overlook the fact that this machine has gotten older and slower and I'm not really down for that. This needs the reboot treatment. Love ya Arnold but you wasted some good years helping run Cali into the ground when you should have been making movies.

After two weak installments I can't say my expectations are high, but I don't think his age will be a problem.
They actually are given an opportunity for this to make sense within the context of the universe, Reese said in The Terminator that the early cyborgs had rubber skin. If they take the kind of Avatar/Andy Serkis approach to motion capture with Arnold, it could work even if it did exist in the uncanny valley, since it's supposed to.

I'd be more excited about King Conan.

I kinda wish he'd make that first because if T5 bombs then they may not let him take on another franchise. Whereas at least if King Conan bombs, it can still be a rounded out trilogy with promises fulfilled that were made in the end credits many many years ago..
