Scientists discover the saddest movie ever

4 years agoby:

Even as the stoic male that I am, I've definitely teared up in a few movies over the years, probably more so than I have from real life events. There are just some situations that are orchestrated specifically to get that emotion out of you, and now Canadian scientists say they've discovered the absolute saddest movie on earth. It's probably not one you're expecting.

The winner is 1979 boxing film THE CHAMP, which starred Jon Voight as a fighter trying to get back custody of his son, a super young Ricky Schroeder. The scene in question that makes everyone burst?

In the scientifically proven heart-wrenching climatic scene Schroder pleads "Champ! Wake up!" after Voight's character dies after a gruelling fight in the ring.

How did they come to this conclusion? It's a quest they've been on for two decades, and this is the number one sadness inducing scene they found.

Two psychology professors in the U.S., James Gross and Robert Levenson, have been working since 1988 to find the perfect sad film clip so they can use it on test subjects in experiments on how sadness affects behaviour. "‘The Champ' . . . produced levels of sadness that were much greater than any other emotion," the researchers wrote in an article.

The movie itself is not acknowledged as very good (38% on RT), but it beat out all other contenders, including the runner up Kramer vs. Kramer. I found this article via Roger Ebert's Twitter, with Ebert himself saying they must not have considered the animated Grave of the Fireflies, which he deems the saddest ever.

Extra Tidbit: What's your number one guaranteed tear jerking movie scene? I'm going to go with the end of IRON GIANT.

Seeing as toy story 3 came out right as i graduated high school that movie always manages to wrestle a tear out of me. Thats the moment i realized my childhood was completely beyond dead. Other than that not to many movies make me cry. I Agree with the guy who said E.t. and A.I. they definitely bring a tear to my eye.

Saddest film? Pick any of Uwe Boll's flims . . .

Wait . . . sad as in "emotional," not "pathetic?"

I'm going to have to say "The Cure." I get choked up every time at the end when the boy leaves the funeral home and we learn that he left his shoe in the casket. I also get choked up during "My Girl" when the little girl breaks down at the funeral.

Thanks for bringing up sad memories . . . someone get me a tissue.

Toy Story 3 is the most recent film that made me cry.
Spielberg has made me cry 3 times: E.T., A.I. and even Saving Private Ryan. War Horse looks like another tear-jerker. Damn you Steven!
Not a movie, but the Futurama episode "The Luck of the Fryrish" got me by surprise. Never thought in a thousand years (see what I did there?) an animated comedy show would make me cry.

Hell yeah I was just thinking that too. The end scene with Andy and the toys with that little girl. What made that so gutwrenching for me was that I was like 8 or 9 when the first one came out, so it was like seeing my childhood friends go away forever.

Not trying to be macho here at all but I rarely cry during movies. However there are a few exceptions. "The Fountain" gets me every time especially when Izzy dies and the end when Tommy finally realizes the importance of life and death.

"Requiem for a Dream" is another. I know most people think all the characters were unlikable but I always tear up seeing them in their own private hells at the end. I always feel so emotionally drained after watching this film.

"Magnolia" This film is filled with several sad and heart warming stories but the one that always gets me is Tom Cruise and his father. I love that Tom's character is such a dick when you first meet him but once you find out his back story you actually feel really bad for him. The scene were he confronts his father on his death bed always brings me to tears. There is just so much power and emotion in Cruise's performance, you literally see him break down in front of you. I also tear up during his father's speech about "regretting anything you want"

Finally I'm gonna have to agree with another poster on this board who mentioned "Man on Fire" with Denzel. There's just something so sad in seeing Creazy in that car at the end, bleeding to death, but happy that he gave a girl a chance to live again. Its his final act of redemption for all the bad stuff he's done in his life. Plus that music just fits the scene so well.

Personally...

I'm NO fan of dramas and/or chick flicks. If they are not going to "get me somewhere" then I will always skip them... but damn! The ending of MARLEY & ME killed me! I though it was another dumb-dog-movie but how wrong I was... (of course, sobbing doesn't get you anywhere either.. but it can happen)

Braveheart Gets Me

Not the saddest, but I get choked up every time at the very last scene - Robert-whatever has Wallace's fabric that Muron made for him, childhood friend throws his sword up in the air, music swells, and all of his comrades start running forward screaming. Gets me Every. Damn. Time.

Gotta agree with Mr. Ebert on this one, as much as I hate doing that. Grave of the Fireflies will have you sobbing like a snot-nosed preteen from start to finish.

BENJI: THE HUNTED

My mom thought she rented a cute dog movie, holy balls was she wrong! There is this one scene where Benji has to decide to go back to the owner he loves or stay in the wild and care for some orphaned cougar cubs ... not all of the cubs make it.
Holy sh*t it was soul crushing. I was 9, it was brutal ...
Siskel and Ebert didn't know what to make of it either: [link] ">

Sad.

For some reason, Click gets me every damn time. The part when he talks to his Father, and of course the ending.

The Documentary Dear Zachary also destroyed me. The end of Benjamin Button also seems to get me.

Sad...but true

Has anyone teared up watching the trailer for War Horse? I saw it in the theater last week, and I started choking up immediately. Seeing the horse running to the accompaniment of John Williams' music was too much for me.

I cried at the end of The Dirty Dozen

Jim Brown was throwing these hand grenades down these airshafts and Richard Jaeckel and Lee Marvin were sitting on top of this armored personnel carrier, dressed up like Nazis...and Trini Lopez...he busted his neck while they were parachuting down behind the Nazi lines...and Richard Jaeckel - at the beginning he had on this shiny helmet.

For me, Toy Story 2 - when Jessie the Cowgirl tells the audience of how she and her owner met, grew up, played together, how her owner grew up and later forgot her. Watching that with the song by Sarah MacLachlan, that's effin' sad, man.

I know Schindler's List is kind of cheap, considering the source material is sad in and of itself, but for me, that's it. However, I would probably agree with Ebert if I had the nerve to watch Grave. I have heard from others saying the same thing, that it's the saddest thing they've ever seen. Sunshine is also pretty damn sad. That movie does nothing but go downhill, in a good way, from pretty much the beginning. I wouldn't say it's one you cry about, but it's definitely sad as hell. Toy Story

LOL totally missed the spoiler warning on that one...

That picture is just sad to look at LOL. I cried during alot of movies, and I am a male. IDC. I'm not telling you the movies I cried at because I'll never hear the end of it. But I could tell you I cried like a little bitch at the end of blue valentine, that shit was so damn depressing. No sense of hope, no sense of nothing. It's such an amazing directed and acted film too.

- The ending to Deep Impact, sure it felt like a Lifetime special, but the part where the astronauts say goodbye to their loved ones before they crash into the asteroid gets me HARD, especially when that one lady astronaut talks to her baby

- In Dumbo, when Dumbo finally sees his mother after all those years, and the ensuing song. DEAR GOD!

- Not a movie, but the ending to Six Feet Under.

But the ending to Big Daddy gets me every time. Not only does he not get to keep the kid, but the part where everybody starts calling their father's to tell them they love them always makes me cry. It makes me think about how great of a father I have every time and I nearly pick up my cell phone just to tell him I love him. I know it's just an Adam Sandler film, but damn, it's such a good scene.

Toy Story 3 and The Green Mile get special mentions as well.

I realise it is more of an action film than anything but this has me weeping like a baby. Heartbreaking stuff.

And the scene in Sixth Sense where Cole's mom tells him the question she asked her passed mother at her funeral ...I must have something with parents.

Land Before Time

When Little Foot's mama gets killed by Sharp Tooth and she gives him the tree star and tells him about the great valley, that is the saddest moment in movie history to me. I saw it for the first time when I was four and twenty years later I watched it with my five year old nephew and we both had tears running down our cheeks.

On the flip side...I also cried @ the end of

Wild Wild West, The Happening & X-Men: The Last Stand...but not in the way you might think. Not because of sad character farwells. Not because of an inspiring triumph over evil.

I cried because those movies made me die a little bit on the inside.

This also goes for Kristen Stewart's entire filmography.

It'd be a 3-Way tie between...

The Green Mile, Toy Story 3 & Marley & Me.

Although, the endings to Return Of The King & E.T. will sneak up on me sometimes, making me start sobbin' like a little eight-year-old with a skinned knee and shit...and there ain't nothing worse then watching a fucking fat man weep.

for me it has to be

marley and me. i worked in the movie theater when it came out and it didnt lose its sadness after the 15th viewing. now that i know the ending, i start to cry through the whole movie anticipating what happens at the end. i cry at the starting credits. i need to find a way not to cry during this movie because i can just be walking in on a scene early on and still start to ball

Will Smith's best acting moment ever was in that episode. When he yells at Uncle Phil, "I don't care what you think. YOU ARE NOT MY FATHER." It's been all downhill for Smith since.
