Scott Derrickson to direct Marvel's Dr. Strange

06.03.2014

Marvel Studios has appointed Scott Derrickson to helm the upcoming Doctor Strange movie. The SINISTER and THE EXORCISM OF EMILY ROSE director will take on the master of the mystic arts on one of the dates Marvel set for unnamed features; May 6 2016, July 8 2016, or May 5 2017. We reported back in 2012 that he was starting a film based on the video game series Deus Ex, but it's more than likely this will take priority now.

Variety reported that a deal was not official, but as I was writing the story Derrickson was probably not able to contain his excitement and Tweeted:

Doctor Stephen Strange is known as the “sorcerer supreme” of the Marvel Universe yet he hasn’t really been explored on film before or with the current slate of Marvel movies. Strange has only been teased in THOR and CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER. There are definitely a lot of possibilities with his character and I’m excited that there is finally movement on a Dr. Strange film. Now we are not only waiting to hear who is taking on ANT-MAN but now who will take on the role of Dr. Strange! These are exciting times.

We will keep you posted on all things Dr. Strange including the yet to be announced release date; Derrickson's recent work DELIVER US FROM EVIL will be hitting theaters July 2 2014.

Are you guys ready for the magic to come to Marvel?

Oh come on. Doctor Strange did trippy magical adventures with Asian spiritual gurus before it was cool.

:-)

There is one actor and only one actor for this role - Idris fucking Elba. Nobody else should be considered...with the exception of Nathan Fillon, of course.

Give us Viggo as the good doctor!

If not Viggo, and they want to go with a younger actor, how about Jonathan Rhys Meyers?

I like Pedro Pascal the most for Doctor Strange. But I'd also be happy with either Oded Fehr or Justin Theroux.

I think the Marvel to DC switch is everything. Ben Affleck totally redeemed himself at Warner Brothers with The Town and Argo. I've always thought part of the reason Ben Affleck was brought on as Batman was because he could help Zack Snyder out with directing. Snyder is an amazing visual director, but Affleck has proven he knows drama and depth, something it seems like these new DC films are going for to separate themselves from Marvel. I guess you could make the same argument with Chris Evans

I guess you could make the same argument with Chris Evans in F4 and Captain America, but again, those are different studios, and two very different roles. Bana was in Hulk, which was an overall disappointment both critically and financially. I know it was a different time for Marvel and all, but I really think they'd rather go with someone a little more fresh, an up and comer (Pedro Pascal perhaps, as some have mentioned). And who even knows if Bana even wants to go back into a franchise role? This interview makes it seem like a no.. [link]

I think u are absolutely right, especially since Marvel has plans for their films all the way out 2028 they will definitely be looking for a younger actor. I'm not that big of a fan of Bana's, not that he is not a good actor i just don't really follow him or favor him either way, having said that, I don't really think that it was all Bana's fault with the Hulk movie. I believe most of it had to do with the director and the terrible story line.

Sinister was really entertaining and The Exorcism of Emily Rose was well done. I'll forgive him for the Day the Earth Stood Still remake, but even with the terrible product placement and mediocre story/acting in that film, it still wasn't as bad as it could have been.

Of all the directors mention for this job, this was my favorite...

Now, I think Fede Alvarez (spelling? ) Would have been my top choice, but based on. Derrickson's work, I love the direction they seem to going with Dr Strange. Going straight up horror would certainly be a shot in the arm to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Derrickson's work has never been less than solid, sometimes borderline great ( The Exorcism of Emily Rose). My level of excitement will definitely rise of fall based on the quality of Deliver Us From Evil, which looks cool. Now, just to

I like it. Deliver us From evil looks pretty sweet to me. It's awesome Marvel is branching out into all these new genres. Conspiracy thriller, space opera, now horror flick? With Edgar Wright and Drew Goddard leaving their respective projects, this is great news.

Sounds promising. I wonder if Derrickson has shown a talent for the psychedelic? I hope the magic here is technicolored and lysergic. A youngish Christopher Lee for Strange please.

Good choice of director; it'll be atmospheric at the least. I've always leaned towards Oded Fehr for Doctor Strange. Jim Caviezel would work too.

I wonder what Jim Caviezel's real name is. Sometimes he goes by Jim but sometimes he goes by James. It's confusing, hehe. Nevertheless, he's a great choice for the role.

His films are generally shot well. As long as he's not writing it, it should be in good hands.

Cool choice.

Jon Hamm, Joaquin, Viggo, and Justin Theroux are all solid choices for Dr. Strange. Personally, I am pulling for Matt Bomer for the role. Please @markemark, refrain from replying with Aiden Gillen. We've heard you.

Great choice of director to bring the world and universe of Doctor Strange to life. He'll do a fantastic job considering the tone of the film probably has to be darker then most solo Avenger films that have come out previously. He did an excellent job with Sinister and really creating a spooky, and intense atmosphere.

Now all Marvel has to do is cast Joaquin Phoenix or Jon Hamm for Doctor Strange and we are set.

While I haven't felt any of his movies to be masterpieces, those are usually more scripting issues than anything else. I am glad they went with someone that has more a horror background, as Strange has that bent to it.

Now this is a movie that had to be dark!

Huge fan of Doctor Dtrange, and this pick for a director is spot on. Can't wait to see which direction they take this movie in, but from past comics it was mostly very grim shit The Doctor had to deal with, and with pg-13 ratings getting slapped on horror movies now on days I hope this has a slight horror vibe to it.
