Scream television series will have supernatural elements and a fifth movie could still happen

10.02.2013

I really thought SCREAM 4 finally killed off the franchise once and for all, but besides an upcoming show on MTV based on the films, it does sound like there is interest in making a fifth movie. Harvey Weinstein was recently at the Zurich Film Festival and made a couple of comments on SCREAM 5 and the television series.

Indiewire was there and apparently Harvey Weinstein is trying to convince his brother to make SCREAM 5. Proceed with caution though, because there is a SCREAM 4 spoiler ahead:

"Everyone lived in ‘Scream 4," he said. "I'm begging him to do the movie and just end it. We've milked that cow."

BlairWitch.de was also in attendance, and they have some additional comments from Weinstein on the television series. He says the film series and the television show are separate, and there will not be an overlap between the two. Weinstein also said the series "is supposed to represent a new beginning and also pursue a supernatural direction."

If the series is going to have supernatural elements, will "Ghost Face" even be on the show or only appear in the first episode? What kind of supernatural directions are they looking at for the series? It sounds like the show might only share its name with the films with no other connections, so why even call it SCREAM?

Oh yeah, that's right: name recognition. A series "based" on the SCREAM films is sure to get more attention than a random show involving the supernatural, which means more people might check it out then if it was called something else. SCREAM 5 and the series could potentially be great, but at this point I'm not too high on either project.

Please no scream 5

I love it when franchises end on a strong note and Scream 4 was by far the best imo. I say it's over.

Maybe it'll just be one of those shows that uses the name but has little or nothing to do with the film series, eg. Friday The 13th The Series or Poltergeist: The Legacy.
I'm sure you could make a tv series that riffs on the tropes of horror movies, or just set it around a bunch of cynical film students investigating murders - might not be awful.

I'm not feeling the TV show, but the possibility for a vicious Scream 5 sounds exciting.

I want...

Scream 5 and 6 like originally planned BUT I didn't really want a 'Scream' TV series and now that it's going to have supernatural elements... Yeah, I'm really not interested.

Whoever puts on that Ghostface costume becomes possessed with an ancient evil ghost... I already know where these supernatural elements are going. Fuckin' hell.

Ehh...

I'm happy to hear the TV series will not be related to the movies... But taking in it in a "supernatural direction"? What the hell does that even mean? Did Munch get really pissed that his family isn't getting royalties for the films or costume sales, so he rises from the dead to take his revenge on a bunch of attractive, scantily clad teenagers who've spend more time dissecting horror films than they do in class, and still get caught in all the classic horror pitfalls. Well... that still

Well... that still sounds better than another Jersey Shore spin-off.

I love the scream movies & if they get a decent script I wouldn't mind seeing another film. But no more Sid, Gail or Dewey, they know killing any of them off would piss off the fans just like Halloween Resurrection did by killing off Laurie Strode (I still just think of H20 as the last one).... although then going by my example maybe they should know when to finish a franchise

What is the point it will just be cancelled and have little to actually do with the movies. Hollywood needs new ideas not recycling popular films.

I liked Scream 4

I think it's a solid entry and actually better than 3. At this point though, I'd like to see the series move away from Syd, Gale, and Dewey. As much as I love them, there is the obvious temptation for the filmmakers to kill them off - but at this point, I would not be happy with any of them dying. They've gone through way too much and survived such horrors, to see them die now would just be insulting and tasteless.

Scream 4 was frustratingly bad. The worst of the series by far, although Scream 3 isn't far behind. They can do whatever they want, Scream 5, tv series (with supernatural elements!?), I am done with this franchise.

Scream 4 should have had at least one of the main three die instead of just flirting with the idea the entire time and using misinformation about Emma Roberts' character being the new Sidney.

I though Scream 4 was pretty entertaining, but a supernatural "Scream" show sounds as silly as a reality house wife show based on Nightmare On Elm Street.

SCREAM 5... 5CREAM???

I feel that the film series featuring the 3 main characters is finished. Having watched the first three films again last Halloween, I could appreciate that all the films were good. Even SCREAM 3, with the passage of time, has become a solid entry as well as a decent conclusion to the series. Yet, they made SCRE4M. And it was good too. But, the characters have all grown as much as they can, unless one of them becomes a killer. Also, the suspension of disbelief needed to continue the franchise

Also, the suspension of disbelief needed to continue the franchise with these characters cannot be stretched any further. If Harvey convinces his brother to do SCREAM 5 then they need to start fresh with a complete new cast in a different part of the country. Which, isn't a bad idea because Ghostface is scary! As for the series, if the supernatural element is Devil worshiping, I can deal with that. But, if it's vampires and sh*t like that? F*ck that noise!

I think you are right. The three main characters have grown as much as they can, but I was actually hoping they would kill at least two of the three main characters in 4 with one dying because they were the killer and had been involved from the beginning.

I loved Scream 4 (though it could've spoofed remakes a little more than it did), but this show idea sounds like they're just using the name for viewers with very little connection to anything from the films. That will fade quickly if the show isn't all that good.

I thoroughly enjoyed Scream 4 and would love to see a fifth and final one. This time have at least SOME sacrifice. For instance have one of the three main players left, Sydney, Gale, or Dewey die. Or makes the stakes higher than they have ever been before.

I thought Scream 4 was surprisingly good. Better than 3 for sure and certainly better than I had any reason or hope or expect. I'd actually like to see another one.

I probably won't watch the TV show so they can do whatever they want, I don't care.

No TV show, no movie please....

They messed up 2,3, and 4 so bad it makes me wonder why they would even try another attempt. I won't throw anymore money at them.

I think "Cabin in the Woods" was pretty much Scream for a new generation. It was a self-aware horror parody involving kids caught in what seems like a cliche horror movie situation and ramps the meta up to eleven. With a Scream TV series, will there be a different killer every week? An arc in which we spend the whole season wondering who the killer is? I guess it could work, but I wouldn't know how.

Agreed, but I will say that Scream also actually worked as a scary movie and a "spoof" or whatever you wanna call it. Cabin in the woods doesn't work as a scary movie because of all the weird cuts to the office/production people and Japanese stuff. This might be because I was a lot younger when Scream came out, however, Cabin is clearly the better movie. Anyway, I'm just kinda ranting

I think that make sense, that in the Scream movies, the comedy was more of the subtext and its examination of horror movies more wry, while Cabin in the Woods was more openly taking the mickey out of the genre (though I would say that Cabin in the Woods does have several pretty effectively gory moments that are funny at the same times, such as the unicorn attack and the merman).
