Screenwriter Roberto Orci lists five characters who will not be in Star Trek 2

Jun. 25, 2012by: Alex Maidy

In a recent radio chat, STAR TREK 2 screenwriter Roberto Orci was asked about characters who will or will not be in the upcoming sequel. With all of the discussion back and forth regarding whether Benedict Cumberbatch would be playing Khan, Orci decided to name five characters, some villains and some not, who will 100% not be in the sequel.

Those characters are Gary Mitchell, Charlie X, Ruk, Janice Rand, and The Borg.

It seemed pretty apparent The Borg would not be in the movie, but assuming that Orci is being honest, this begins to lend merit back to the Khan theories. I started to get my hopes up that it would be Gary Mitchell after all, but I am one of the few that would like to see a rebooted Khan enter the fray. My problem with a lot of franchises these days is that they kill off villains after one appearance instead of prolonging them through multiple films to build that animosity between good and bad guys.

Orci also mentioned the movie title has a "75% chance" of using the words STAR TREK but no confirmation on the final name of the film. I would be willing to bet the movie has a subtitle but no number. That seems to be popular these days.

CBS and Orci have discussed a possible STAR TREK animated series, but no word on what generation would be the focus of the story. With both THE CLONE WARS and TRON: UPRISING successfully translating storied franchises into the world of cartoons, a new STAR TREK cartoon may not be so farfetched.

STAR TREK 2 opens May 17, 2013.

I just thought about this when I saw that pic with Spock's neck pinch not working then it hit me, he could be one of Noonian Soong's early droids. It would be interesting how they would play that out with in the Klingons in the backdrop.

No Khan

Granted, some villains are killed too quickly (Tim Burton made that mistake with BATMAN), but Khan was not only a one-time villain. He was an original series villain from an iconic episode and then brought back fifteen years later to reveal what had happen to him. This is why Wrath of Khan works so well to those who are fans. The fact that it works so well to non-fans only proves the mastery of the film itself.

After Abrams, Kurtzman and Orci's brilliant job of rebooting the franchise and clearing the slate in a justifiable way to please purist fans, it seems an off choice to then revert back to trying to redo the franchise's most iconic villain. However, I have no reason to doubt whatever creative choice they make.

5 Things I Don"t Ever Want to See in a J.J. Abrams' Star Trek movie

1) a Holodeck

2) a bar on the Enterprise (even though the film's engine room was essentially an Anheuser-Busch brewery)

3) a psychologist as a bridge officer

4) the Deflector Dish used as anything other than a Deflector Dish

5) characters quoting Shakespeare

Forgive my ignorance, I am not a Trekkie, but did Kirk ever go against the Borg? If he didn't, would it be weird if he did? I figure with the better effects now it would be a better idea now.

The Borg were not encountered until the Next Generation so Kirk never did face off against them in the films or shows, although I believe they were featured in ENTERPRISE which took place a hundred years before Kirk's time. Not that you wanted this much info, but the first three Star Trek novels that Shatner "wrote" featured Kirk being revived by the Borg after his death in GENERATIONS to be used as a weapon against the Federation. This was a story many many fans wanted to see filmed. Perhaps

Perhaps as a DTV animated film one day like the great Batman animated features, but one would have to use all of the actors' voices, which would be difficult being that McCoy showed up in the story and DeForest Kelly is passed away. Perhaps Karl Urban could provide the voice. But Shatner and Nimoy would be essential.

Well-played, Orci, but all for naught! Through simple deductive reasoning, I've hereby concluded that Cumberbatch will be playing... the Doomsday Machine!
