Longtime screenwriting duo Alex Kurtzman & Roberto Orci breaking up

Apr. 22, 2014by: Paul Shirey

Nope, we haven't gone tabloid on you. Screenwriting duo Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci aren't breaking up in the traditional sense, but are breaking up their writing relationship in order to focus on other opportunities. While that may sound insignificant in the grand scheme of things, there's actually some interesting developments as a result. The duo have worked on a number of high-profile projects, beginning with 2006's THE ISLAND, MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 3, COWBOYS AND ALIENS, TRANSFORMERS, STAR TREK, STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS, and most recently on THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 . However, both Kurtzman and Orci are ready to pursue other projects, particularly with directing.

Orci is currently focused on the development of STAR TREK 3 and is "heavily lobbying to direct the production." Currently, he's working on the script with Patrick McKay and John D. Payne and while J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot and Skydance appear to be in favor of Kurtzman directing the film, Paramount is more apprehensive. Gambling on a first time director for a major franchise film is, well, a BIG gamble.

Kurtzman, on the other hand, is having better luck as he's already been tapped by Sony to direct the Spider-Man spinoff film, VENOM. Kurtzman wrote the script for VENOM with Orci and Ed Solomon. Kurtzman is also "working on a solo deal with Universal to oversee monster movie franchises that include “The Mummy” and “Van Helsing.”

The two still have a number of projects in development together and it's unclear how those will shake out going forward. No reason was given for their creative split, but are said to be parting "amicably" and will still continue to remain in business together on the TV front (Sleepy Hollow, Hawaii Five-O).
I think this is pretty standard for any creative duo. Sometimes opportunities open up, change is needed, the toilet seat keeps being left up, whatever. These things happen. It will be interesting to see what these guys churn out individually, if even just to see if there's any real difference in the work.

Kurtzman & Orci's latest collaborative effort, THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 hits theaters on May 2, 2014.

So?

Outside of the first Star Trek, and maybe MI:3, all of those movies are fucking terrible. Guess they decided to split up so they could pump out crap more efficiently over a wider area?

I honestly don't hate these guys. The Star Trek films are extremely entertaining and contain some very good character beats. Revenge of the Fallen was heavily rewritten by Michael Bay himself due to the writers' strike. Kurtzman and Orci also created the excellent TV show Fringe alongside J. J. Abrams.

I know one of these guys directed a movie with Chris Pine a couple years ago, I think it was "People Like Us", and it was good, so I'm sure both these guys will do ok. Although the quality of their work has been all over the place, with Star Trek possibly the best and Transformers 2 the worst (but I guess the writers strike played a role in that as well).

Blade: Trinity anyone?

PLEASE do not let a rookie like Orci direct Star Trek 3, PLEASE!!!!! Look what happened when they let rookie director David S. Goyer direct Blade: Trinity, that movie could've been so badass and a great end to the trilogy, but instead it was a messy piece of shit! LEARN FROM BLADE: TRINITY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So because someone completely unrelated to this guy made a bad movie the first time he was a director, that means he will also direct a bad movie as well? That's some sound reasoning there. I guess at your place of employment (wherever that is), when someone not related to you does a bad job, your supervisor reprimands you for it?

No, I'm saying you don't let a first time director direct a movie in a billion dollar franchise! He hasn't earned it and history proves it won't end well.

What I hope is that one of them does well and the other totally sucks. That way we can weed out the one responsible for all the shit, and not have to worry about it any more. The worst thing that could happen is that they both end up being terrible or mediocre, because then people will assume the solution is to get them back together rather than dumping them both

They've been good and bad so it will be interesting to see what happens.

This pretty much guarantees that the Venom movie will be an incoherent mess (not that I had high expectations for that anyway) while Star Trek 3 will somehow manage to be even WORSE than Into Darkness. And now after hearing how bad TASM 2 is, I honestly believe Orci and Kurtzman have no business, well, being in this business.

I thought Kurtzman was directing Venom. If he's lobbying to direct Star Trek 3 then this would prove to be a problem...

Not surprising

They have written a lot together. Some great, some awful. I'm sure at some point they will work together on a project, it just might not be for a while
