Sean Connery would have made how much money for playing Gandalf??

Nov. 20, 2012by: Alex Maidy

Talk about hindsight being 20/20. Sean Connery, as we all have known, was the first actor offered the role of Gandalf in THE LORD OF THE RINGS. He was offered $10 million per movie and yet he turned it down because he "didn't understand the script". For $10 million, I would recite dialogue in Swahili. That is a ton of money.

But, apparently the $10 million was not the final offer. Celebrity NetWorth reports that Connery was also offered 15% of the gross for all three LORD OF THE RINGS movies. Those films have grossed three billion dollars to date. That means in total, Sean Connery could have made $450 million dollars! That doesn't even include if he had returned for THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY and the upcoming sequels.

$450 million!

I am pretty sure that Ian McKellan did not get that deal, otherwise we would have heard about it. But can you imagine passing up that much money because you didn't get the movie? This is the man who starred in THE AVENGERS and THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMAN. I am pretty sure he could have winged it.

Good choice, Mr. Connery.

Extra Tidbit: He turned down THE MATRIX, too? WTF?

One one hand...

you guys curse & berate Hollywood for being greedy and yet here you are posting a story which glorifies greed. I agree with all the posters, Connery made his choices which is respectable and Sir McKellen was just great.

... and at times I hate your smarmy tone...

There's no denying that $450 million is an ass-load of cash, but hindsight is 20/20. Everyone seems to forget that before Peter Jackson made Lord of the Rings, a lot of people thought Tolkien's story was virtually unfilmable. I give him credit for sticking to his guns.

Love the clip!!

He turned down Matrix, turned down LOTR so then he said fuck it ill do League of Extraordinary Gentlemen? You should have followed your gut on that one too man! Anyhow these films or his filmography (and bank account) haven't suffered at all because of those choices, so no big deal.

He didn't think he could play the role. He didn't care about the money. He wanted to make sure he could give a good performance and he didn't feel it with this role. I admire his honesty and fortitude. You don't see that much anymore. Besides, McKellen did a stellar job as Gandalf. They went the right way.

It's a damn shame. We could have had a James Bond/Scaramanga rematch. Kind of.

When did this story break? i just saw a comment on another article talking about old news. This one broke all the way back when the films released. I remember looking up highest paid actors and the one article mentioned this.

I'd take McKellen over Connery any day.
