See dogfights and a pipe-smoking Cuba Gooding Jr. in a clip from LucasFilm's WWII movie Red Tails

01.10.2012

It's been in the works for years, and now the WWII action-drama RED TAILS will finally shoot up the screen on January 20th.

The movie chronicles the story of the Tuskegee Airmen, the legendary group of African Americans who were the first black pilots in the US military. Produced and financed by George Lucas and directed by Anthony Hemingway, RED TAILS stars Terrence Howard, Cuba Gooding Jr., Bryan Cranston, Nate Parker, David Oyelowo, Tristan Wilds, Method Man, Lee Tergesen, Ne-Yo, Elijah Kelley, Andre Royo and Jesse Williams.

As you can see from the clip below, the movie puts a lot of ILM-powered planes in the digital sky and gives Cuba Gooding Jr. something to stick in his mouth (and maybe keeps him off Netflix's list of D-grade new streaming releases for a few days).

If you're interested in hearing what Lucas has to say (or if you just want to find out if he's still hopelessly out of touch), there are interviews with him on The Daily Show and with USA Today.

Lucas is fundamentally correct that this truly is the first BIG BUDGET action or war movie to feature an all-black cast. If anybody can name one, I'd love to know and put it on my queue.

Lucas didn't mean that as a slight to those trailblazing filmmakers like Gordon Parks, but as a rebuke to Hollywood for taking so damn long

I am looking ridiculously forward to this movie (which is directed by The Wire & Treme's Anthony Hemingway, not George Lucas) and even if it has some flaws with script or dialog will be an instant classic. This is a story that DESERVES this big budget, major release treatment and frankly I've not watched those trailers once where I didn't get goosebumps.

It's a fine story, but Lucas obviously isn't telling it very well.

Lucas was on The Daily Show the other night and basically said he's been working on this film for *23 years*. And that when he farmed it around the studios they all said "no thanks".

So it's yet another powerful Hollywood personality with a pet project that they think is SOOOO great, and can't understand why it's not getting any love.

Agreed, he's been living in Lucas land for way too long.

I know someone who went to a screening of this and they said it was awful. That's really too bad. This story deserved a better movie.

Did we really need another racist white man keeping the black man down movie. How's this supposed to help us live together in peace? Fuck you George Lucas.

This looks so bad. Only made it the 0:33 mark, and when one guy did a Marlon Wayans crazy face, I stopped.

nice to know that the awfully-good column is still being fed by Hollywood (and by no other than Lucas himself!)

In an interview with Jon Stewart, Lucas basically took full credit for producing an unprecedented, all african american action picture. This seems a little insulting to directors dating back to the 1970's who fought through more adversity to accomplish the same goal with far less Hollywood sway. I feel it's even more insulting that he slapped his usual fetishization of serials and B-movies on a story that seemingly deserved better writing. Then again, I haven't seen it.

This movie looks like so much shit!

I mean what the hell happened to Cuba Gooding Jr? Seriously. He was great in Jerry Maguire.
