See the two sides of Godzilla in this poster and close up look from the film

Apr. 10, 2014by: Niki Stephens

When it was announced that Gareth Edwards would take on helming duties for the GODZILLA reboot, I knew that we could potentially have something very special on our hands. The creature himself has many followers and devout fans that have been waiting on a great updated version. With everything that weve seen so far, I think its fair to assess that this is going to crush the hell out of the GODZILLA of 1998. Sorry Matthew Broderick.

A new poster for the film has hit and its probably my favorite yet. Now I have to quickly divert your attention away from the poster and on to this new close up image that is said to be from the next issue of Entertainment Weekly (via Bloody Disgusting). Its a great shot, and I love that it looks like Godzilla is grinning. Yeah, hes grinning because he just tore down most of the city and pissed on everyone below. Godzilla answers to no one.

Check both of them out below.

GODZILLA, starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Bryan Cranston, Juliette Binoche, Ken Watanabe, Sally Hawkins, and David Strathairn, stomps into theaters on May 16, 2014.

Both are great, but I am still wondering how the other creatures from the film are supposed to fit into this and how Godzilla takes them on. It's good they've kept that a mystery from us, but I am very, very curious. And I do want that poster for my room. If those are coming with IMAX tickets, then I'll most definitely be seeing it in IMAX.

@ Common Sense Man

I was just gonna mention the size of Godzillas' body compared to his head. Its like a pear or a fat booty white woman with small breast. Love them both and I don't mind the design of this new Godzilla, looks very menacing.

Awesome shots of the ultimate monster. This is the Godzilla that closely resembles the monster we knew and loved.

State the Obvious

Why has no one mentioned the obvious flaw in this design, Godzilla has a tiny pin head! I know he may have a brain the size of a walnut but geez give the guy a bigger noggin. I saw one of the toys and it was laughable how tiny his head is, you can see it in one of the trailers too. Blah just looks so bad.

Once again - did no one see Monsters? The director is 0 - 1 doing monster movies, so don't get too excited. Caution. Wait and see.

Are you kidding? Monsters was made for well under $1million (which is the typical budget for SyFy original movies), and the director was also the production designer & did all the VFX work himself. That alone is amazingly impressive.

His directing skills were also extremely impressive as every actor involved deliver believable performances. The movie was beautifully shot, and despite the extremely low budget, it had very high production values.

The script wasn't great, but it was leagues

The script wasn't great, but it was leagues ahead of most modern low budget creature features (imo). It was certainly an original take on the monster genre, and I loved how the monsters were just part of that world.

Thank god someone else hated that like I did! Boring with reprehensible characters!

However, I do have a bit of hope for this. Everything I have seen hasn't made me want hurl my computer monitor down in disgust, so yay there!

YUP

Godzilla looks fuckin badass and scary. I can't wait to see him in action, and I can't wait to see the atomic breath, and huge amount of destruction he'll cause.

They've nailed it. The goal is to create a version of Godzilla that is genuinely frightening and awe-inspiring while still retaining an adequate amount of nostalgia. Godzilla has certainly gotten Flanderized over the years and this seems to be the treatment the King of Monsters deserves. It may not be a totally accurate comparison, but my brother suggested that perhaps this is the Deep Impact to Pacific Rim's Armageddon.

You're welcome. Unfortunately, can't claim credit for "Flanderization". TV Tropes is lots of fun and very informative; it's just a time and attention black hole because there's endless amounts of interesting stuff to read.

I kind of wish I didn't click on this article. Would rather have waited to have seen what Godzilla really looks like up close.

Otherwise he looks great, gigantic, and scary as hell.
