Check out Will Smith in these new photos from the set of M. Night Shyamalan's After Earth

02.09.2012by:

So M. Night Shyamalan (THE LAST AIRBENDER, THE HAPPENING) is somehow still being allowed to make movies, and today we've got photographic proof!

Taken from Will Smith's Facebook and Shyamalan's WhoSay page, these set photos are the first from the duo's upcoming sci-fi film AFTER EARTH. For those of you cringing at the thought of more M. Night storytelling stupidity, the good news is that the project's script has been in the hands of Gary Whitta (THE BOOK OF ELI) and Academy Award-winning writer Stephen Gaghan (TRAFFIC), so the end result may turn out to be palatable afterall. Here's the film's premise (via Variety):

"Will and Jaden Smith are set to star as a father and son who crash-land on Earth one thousand years after mankind has abandoned the planet. The crash leaves the elder Smith badly injured, and it's up to the boy to find help in what is now a strange and dangerous place."

AFTER EARTH also stars Zoe Kravitz, Sophie Okonedo, and Isabelle Fuhrman, and is currently scheduled to open June 7, 2013.

"...strange and dangerous place."

Wow, yeah. That jacuzzi in a tropical paradise sure looks dangerous alright. If you're not careful, the bartender might put too much lime juice in your mai tai.

Will Smith...

don't play around yo. I maintain that The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, and Signs were so good they will never be outdone by the man himself, and as a result Shyamalan will for the rest of his career be considered a failure. Not until years later will his vision be full appreciated. Yep

Well...

I saw deVil and I was impressed. M. Night is still a good writer, maybe one of the best. People complain about The Happening but there was a good story in there somewhere. What if plant life on Earth felt threatened by mankind and decided to fight back? It was like a remake of The Birds except without the birds. That was the problem: there's no way the wind blowing leaves off a tree in the middle of the afternoon is ever going to be scary.

How much money did your movie make last year?

Bc whether you like it or not, M's movie made over $130 mil in the box office. So, I guess SOME people must have liked it. Internet nerds, calm the hell down.

Guess the Shyamalan twist ending!

What could it be?!?! The amazing twist ending Shyamalan perfected with The 6th sense and...not so much....in his other films?
Is it really earth? Earth from the past? is all in present day earth and Will Smith is a recovering crack addict that's hallucinating? Who knows?!?!
Guess at what it could be!

After Turd

One after another for ol' Night. And I've seen this script. It might as well be BATTLEFIELD: EARTH 2. And I mean number 2.

Come on guys. There's no reason this should have such a low strike back rating. This film has a lot of potential. Will Smith has never made a bad film. That's a fact. He makes really smart choices. And the fact that M. Night didn't write the script is a very very good thing. This film's going to be awesome.

Sure 'The Happening' was one of the worst movies I've ever seen. Of course 'The Last Airbender' was an unspeakable abomination, but M Night's first three or four movies were superb and he's still out there filming original screenplays. Last Airbender aside, he's not doing movies based on comics or video games, he's not remaking movies that don't need remaking and he's not doing turgid airport novel adaptations. As much as I did hate 'The Happening', I have to give M Night some kudos for doing

PASSSS

Sorry, I like Will and all, but Jaden and M. Night??!! NOPE! M.Night sucks, sorry, but his last 3/4 movies have been shit. Jaden on the other hand CAN'T ACT, did any of you actually watch The Karate Kid?? He has the most awkward facial expressions, and delivers the lines with 0 finesse or emotion. He's a piece of cardboard, trying to "act" like his dad.

So yeah, no thank you on this one.

Gotta agree. Plus, have you heard or read anything the kid has said during interview? He comes off like the spoiled, arrogant little bastard I'm sure he is. All the Smith kids were born on third and seem to think they hit a triple. No thanks.

And after The Happening I'll never be able to take Shyamalan seriously again.

Sounds like a cool premise and looks like a nice backdrop. I do love Shyamalan's style, even counting the movies that I didn't enjoy. I look forward to more information on this.

I'll watch the trailer. Shyamalan has been a disappointment for years now, with The Village being the last film I enjoyed. The sad truth of the matter too is that he really doesn't see anything wrong. I really hope he learns lessons from what people say about his film and doesn't just see the dollar signs. Here's a guy who used to craft fantastic art. Now, I don't know what to expect. He always has fantastic concepts, but the execution is a thud. Hopefully, with new writers and Will Smith as a

There you go. Another one of those movies people spit on before they saw more than just a few pictures about it, but when a trailer comes out in a couple of months, they'll all go ''I had faith in this, and it looks incredible'. Predictable.

I'm pointing the irony ofthe fact that people bitch about a movie while it's in production and turn 180 as soon as a trailer is released, just like what happened recently with The Bourne Legacy and The Amazing Spider-Man, among others. It has nothing to do with Shyamlanan or liking his film. So what's your point douchebag ?

Oh, relax, I knew what you were talking about, can't take a friendly joke? Personally, I never shit on Legacy or Spiderman because of the talent involved, and I'm not so much harping on this yet until I see a trailer, though, as it stands now, I have little to no expectation for this after M. Night's four horrendous strikes in a row.

I don't know many people that have 180-ed on Spiderman. I'm actually looking forward to it, but most people on here and other film sites still seem to think it's garbage.

I will never understand where all the Shyamalan hate comes from. Yes, his last few films have been stinkers, but but despite that he's also made some of my all-time favorites (Sixth Sense, Unbreakable) as well as some just damn good films (Signs, The Village). Apart from a select handful of elite directors (hard to find a rotten egg in Chris Nolan's resume), how many filmmakers haven't had duds? Or lulls in their career? Hell, Hitchcock made some downright shitty films. I'm not saying this is

I'm not saying this is gonna be good or bad, I'm just saying that I remember how very good Shyamalan can be and so (similarly to how I view Andrew Niccol) I will continue to see his films and hope that he returns to form.

The only reason he's still working as an A-list director is because his movies somehow make shitloads of money.

Lady in the Water tanked, Happening and Airbender barely made money back, but took enough backlash that I can't consider him A-List anymore, he needs Smith bad to insure a hit. Be interesting to see how it plays out.

Actually, Fury, quite to the contrary, his movies do quite well over seas. They may not do so well domestically, but internationally, people like his movies. In fact, Last Airbender made back twice it's budget, and The Happening actually made back more than 3 times it's budget. So I don't know where you get your numbers from, but he's still a very bankable director, even if his films aren't so good anymore.

Sometimes you see a big Hollywood film set and it's very clear where those $100MM budgets go and sometimes you get photos of barebones sets and tiny crews like these and you have to wonder just how much BS there is in touting the talent of film makers like M. Night.
