Serenity now for Kirsten Dunst in the first poster for Lars von Trier's Melancholia

If you're a Von Trier fan then you'll be glad to know that the word on MELANCHOLIA, the Danish auteur's latest examination of how f*cked up we are as humans (with the slight addition of a planet that's on course to kill everyone), is that it's pretty great. Movie boner: rising.

And apparently, Kirsten Dunst - pictured below in the film's new one sheet - gives an excellent performance! Will this help lessen the somewhat odd antagonism that's so often been directed towards her amongst movie nerds these past, what, 10 years? I don't know, but she also gets her boobs out which might help.

MELANCHOLIA - starring Dunst, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Alexander Skarsgard, Kiefer Sutherland, Stellan Skarsgard, John Hurt, Charlotte Rampling, Udo Kier, and Brady Corbet - destroys us all November 11th.

Synopsis: In this beautiful movie about the end of the world, Justine (Kirsten Dunst) and Michael (Alexander Skarsgard) are celebrating their marriage at a sumptuous party in the home of her sister Claire (Charlotte Gainsbourg), and brother-in-law John (Kiefer Sutherland). Despite Claires best efforts, the wedding is a fiasco, with family tensions mounting and relationships fraying. Meanwhile, a planet called Melancholia is heading directly towards Earth...

Best film of the year so far

I left the cinema feeling incredibly sad but in a good way - I had the same reaction when I first saw Cronenberg's Dead Ringers
It's easily von Trier's best film to date

Very good movie, a step up for LVT from Antichrist, and super strong performances from Dunst and Gainsbourg. Dunst, in particular, has seen her stock drop with her bad performances in the Spidey films, but she does hit it out of the park now and then. Worse actresses, like Natalie Portman, have won Oscars.

Best Movie of '11 So Far

Poster is good, but I was fortunate enough to see a screening of this movie recently and it's the best movie I've seen of 2011. It's a fantastic metaphor for depression and the intense feeling it instills on someone. The most I've FELT at a movie in a while. It's also beautiful. Basically, if you saw the trailer and thought "Hey, this looks like its going to be good" then you'll like this movie. Although, some people did seem a little dumbfounded by the time the end credits rolled, I think they

Although, some people did seem a little dumbfounded by the time the end credits rolled, I think they just needed to process what had just transpired. It will be available on VOD sometime in October but you can see it in theaters (which you should) on November 11th!

That was a lot of rambling but hopefully I made my point...
