Set photos from Fox's Gotham show off James Gordon and Oswald Cobblepot

03.17.2014

So I see most of you are hip to Fox’s GOTHAM. I think JoBlo reader, stranger496 said it best: ”Doesn't Matter. I'll consume everything Batman no matter how bad it is for me.” It’s Batman. It might be young Bruce Wayne, but it’s still insight into the heart of Gotham. Instead of the focus actually being on Wayne already as Batman, we get to start from the beginning. I always thought that Commissioner Gordon was an interesting character, and that paired with the idea of fleshing out the origins of our favorite villains works for me.

If you were curious how the character might look in costume then I’ve got something you might like. Here we have our first set pictures of Ben McKenzie as Detective James Gordon and Robert Lord Taylor as Oswald Cobblepot also known as Penguin. The focus here is on Taylor’s spot on Cobblepot. I just remember him as the spazzy kid from ACCEPTED. We’ll just have to see if he can talk the talk on when the show hits this Fall.

Check out the pics below.

Everyone knows the name Commissioner Gordon. He is one of the crime world’s greatest foes, a man whose reputation is synonymous with law and order. But what is known of Gordon’s story and his rise from rookie detective to Police Commissioner? What did it take to navigate the multiple layers of corruption that secretly ruled Gotham City, the spawning ground of the world’s most iconic villains? And what circumstances created them – the larger-than-life personas who would become Catwoman, The Penguin, The Riddler, Two-Face and The Joker?

GOTHAM is an origin story of the great DC Comics super villains and vigilantes, revealing an entirely new chapter that has never been told. From executive producer/writer Bruno Heller (“The Mentalist,” “Rome”), GOTHAM follows one cop’s rise through a dangerously corrupt city teetering on the edge of evil and chronicles the birth of one of the most popular super heroes of our time."

Degrassi the Batman years

This is looking worse and worse. First the leak about how horrible the scripts are, then the pics of kids pretending to be the most boring characters in the Bat Universe and now tying it all together with crappy set production. Does this show even know when this all takes place?? Is it set in the 60s, 70s or 80s? It can't be set in todays time, that just makes no sense.

Is it so hard to have a proper penguin - HE IS NOT A DIFFICULT CHARACTER TO TRANSLATE! Short fat guy. You don't need to do the monster Penguin from Batman Returns. This could be the deal breaker for me, since Penguin is my fave batman villain. unless of course he is going to eat a load of food and become fat??

I like what I'm seeing so far. I really hope this show is as good as 'Arrow', I know that's a tall order, but I think it can be done.

I know Gotham was corrupt, but one of the biggest themes I like ab Batman is, does his presence make more costumed crazies appear? Gordon dealing with gangs and mobs? Cool. But Batman's rogues? The Joker? Two face? Well established that the appearance of Bats helped lead them to do crime with their costume or theme or whatever. Young Selina stealing? Fine. Young Selina in a Catwoman suit? How'd she get that idea?

Of course I will give it a try but......

........but lets pray it doesn't end up like the Agents of Shield disaster. Still trying to erase that pile of dog shit from my brain.

So the Penguin is now emo-handsome, sorta like Loki. Okay. Could they not have made him look at least a little bit like a pudgy haberdasher? Or would that spoil the attempt to sell Oswald Cobblepot posters to teen-aged girls?

Batman vs Superman Origin story

So no one thinks this show could be an origin story for Batman vs Superman? It would be an easy way to introduce Ben Affleck's Batman instead of having to make a film, even if the show involves a young Bruce Wanye. Why would dc plan a Gotham tv show that doesn't connect with its film counterparts?

Don't get me wrong, I'm gonna at least check this show out for the reasons listed in the article.
However, this is the first time I've really been nervous. No mustache and no glasses is no Gordon.

Hey Kal-El, while I agree with some of your statements (albiet, I would still prefer to see a 'stache or glasses, instead of bland white guy detective), the picture you linked is from GCPD comics, which takes place after Gordon retired and Bullock is a persona non grata. It's not Gordon, the man in the forefront is named Driver, I believe.

First off, mustaches are actually pretty huge right now for young people, so you're wrong on that front. Second, young people have glasses - I've had mine since I was ten years old. Gordon also had his glasses since he was young. Thirdly, that actor looks identical to his character from Southland.

If you're going to adapt something based off a visual medium (a comic), then you need to have the actor look A LITTLE like the character, because that's the only identifier beyond characterization.

There's no voice, no "movement," nothing. Young Jim Gordon is A) Ginger B) Bespectacled and C) Mustachioed. Whoever chose to ditch all three for a generic-looking dude made a clear and shitty mistake.

Gordon, not whoever you linked to: [link]

Looks about right so far. Hope the writing isn't as god-awful as the script leaks purport it to be.

They both definitely look the part. Very excited for this. Can't wait to see what everyone else looks like.
