Set Visit: Green Lantern!

May. 17, 2011by: JoBlo

Aliens, mysterious green powers, and a guy with a devil-may-care attitude. Its all you could ask for from a superhero movie and its everything I got to experience when I visited the set of the upcoming Warner Bros. film, GREEN LANTERN, last summer.

While I cant divulge too many details without spoiling some really fun secrets, I can tell you that all of my faith in the film, which had been dashed by that lackluster EW cover of GLs costume and a sketchy early trailer, has been utterly restored.

So what did I see that made me a tried-and-true Green believer? Lets just say that there was a visit to the art department and some delectable details about the plot and characters that were dropped. I also got a chance to speak with some of the stars (Ryan Reynolds and Mark Strong), pick the brains of the crew responsible for the effects, and see some of the more practical aspects of the film -- including never-before-seen footage.

In the meantime, check out these new pics and stills given to us by the WB and take heart in the fact that while I had been the first to make a meh noise upon hearing that the GLs costume would be in CGI and had further raised my eyebrow in skepticism, I now think that the filmmakers made the right choice and that it was a great choice to make.

At my set visit I saw and heard some things that changed my perspective and opinion of the costume enough so that I can (almost) confidently say its going to look awesome. Plus, lets be honest, Ryan Reynolds is going to be wearing it. You cant go wrong with that physique.

Oh... I also got to wear the ring -- yes, the ring. It was love. And if you want to feel that love, starting today, you can log on to the film's official website and record your own Green Lantern oath (you know the one: "In brightest day, in blackest night, No evil shall escape my sight, Let those who worship evil's might, Beware my power... Green Lantern's light!") and have it posted right on the site for all to see! Just head to greenlanternmovie.warnerbros.com/oath and click the "Take the Oath" button to submit your version. Will it be as good as Ryan Reynolds? Probably not, but give it a shot anyway...

supergreen

making it more sci-fi than superhero is cool, this could turn out to be one amazing space opera.

Sounds great!

And I love the Cemetery! It's really cool that the corpses are inside the tombstones, great design!
Oa is also nice...

Can't wait for more!

I like the artwork for the Planet Oa cemetary (supposed phallic imagery aside), though iffy on the Planet Oa City artwork, mostly due the purple and blue color pallete overpowering any green on display.

Still don't fully understand all the negativity towards the suit. They really only had 2 other ways to go with it, form-fitting spandex or fabric (Spiderman & Superman films), or battle armor (Batman). Photos and stills don't always do justice for "motion" pictures. Looking forward to the

Pics look great

I am so jealous that you got to see any type of footage at all and really jealous that you got to wear the ring. Life would have been complete for me at that point.

I'm becoming intrigued

The film is looking much better and far more interesting than it did in the early marketing phase. I'll definitely be giving this a shot.

The suit still looks like radioactive bacon though. It's ridiculous, even for a mental construct.

Yes, they could either go spandex or armour. But there's a third option with something leather-esque ala Affleck's Daredevil or X-Men. I think that would have been a superior choice, and hopefully they go that route for the reboot with Nathan Fillion

Kinda pointless....

What a pointless article, haha. So you just wrote an article to tell us that you went to the Green Lantern set and can't show us anything except for concept art? What a waste of time.

I'm really hoping for the best for this. But the first posters looked really gay. then I saw the suit on the cover of EW and thought i looked like the robin outfit from batman forever - really, really gay.

Now I'm seeing these photos of the sets and I'm fully convinced this looks really, really, really gay.

The Planet Oa Cemetery looks like a field of dildos! And what's this magical purple sky? It looks like a video shoot for a george michael video - not a badass superhero

nice vocabulary and reasoning. I don't think I can take anyone serious when the only reason they give is that the movie looks "gay". Dumbass.

Wow, you guys have really taken this to heart. Yes, it looks like a fantasy world involving unicorns.

Also, you guys, who are calling other people dumb and idiots have done a fantastic job of giving legit reasons why you think this looks good other than just the fact that you've bought into a movie that you haven't even seen yet. That's smart!

And I'm sorry, Anderson Cooper & Partner, I meant gay as in 'my parents are shaperoning the dance'
