Seth MacFarlane has been asked to host the Oscars again...will he accept the job?

Apr. 19, 2013by:

Seth MacFarlane

A debate could rage for hours on if Seth MacFarlane was a good host at last years Oscars but it doesn't matter when you take into consideration one thing: 40.3 million viewers. That doesn't mean he was a fantastic host but it does mean there was a significant increase in viewers over last years Oscars and that is a fact that "the powers that be" definitely have not missed. While MacFarlane was criticized because some of his jokes may have contained undertones of sexism and racism, similar controversies didn't stop Ricky Gervais from hosting the Golden Globes again.

Seth MacFarlane tweeted almost immediately after the Oscars ended that he wouldn't host again but apparently he has been asked to return. It was previously confirmed that producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron will be back for next year's awards show and they are the same two that hired Seth MacFarlane originally. Now Just Jared has a source claiming that an offer has been made to the comedian:

After defending his performance, the producers reached out to Seth and invited him back to host the show again. He’s not sure if he’s going to do it, but he has to decide within the next couple of weeks.

Last year's Oscars improved enough in ratings (especially in the all important 18-49 demographic) that it would almost be more of surprise if he wasn't asked back, even if he had previously stated he wouldn't be interested in returning. To be honest, I think there's a good chance we'll be seeing again for the 2014 Academy Awards. What do you think?

Seth MacFarlane's next film, the live-action western comedy A MILLION WAYS TO DIE IN THE WEST with Charlize Theron, Liam Neeson and Giovanni Ribisi is currently in pre-production.

Extra Tidbit: If not Seth MacFarlane, who would you want to see host next year's Oscars? I'm pulling for Werner Herzog.

I'd like to see Ricky Gervais do it. I always found his hosting duties to have me laughing the hardest.

He was the main reason I tuned into the dog & pony show. I hope he does it again.

I thought Seth was awesome & funny as hell as 2013's host, but...

I hope he says NO...loudly & quickly. Let the Acadamy find somebody else to host in 2014. Someone that the PTC (Parents Television Council a.k.a the (P)erennial (T)ampon (C)ontingent) will again, no doubt, break out their torches & pitchforks for. I'd much rather be spending my March 2nd Sunday night watching the brand of humor that MacFarlane is known for w/ a new episode of Family Guy/American Dad 1st...then I'd switch over to the Oscars.

Now, if the producers gave him free reign to do

Now, if the producers gave him free reign to do anything he wants (doubtful, but a comedic fanboy can dream..can't he?) then I'll be there w/ fucking bells on!

Seriously? This year's Oscars wasn't just the worst Oscar show (I've seen) but he easily was the worst host.

He was fine except for the loooooong skit with William Shatner. That went on way too long.

I enjoyed MacFarlane. He had the necessary sting that the Oscars needed. The Oscars are really nothing more than a way for Hollywood to pat itself on the back, as if making the films, having millions of people see them, and raking in boatloads of money weren't enough. MacFarlane's lampooning of Hollywood was fantastic, and it was so very wonderful to see Hollywood squirm in their seat. That said, MacFarlane has stated he's not returning and I am inclined to believe it. Besides, now that

WHY HIM? ooh the ratings...oooh geez...come on...McFarlane took some liberties that would be fine on MTV Movie Awards...we are talking the Oscars...sure there should be good jokes...but after McFarlane made some off color jokes and the horrible songs...dont ask him to come back...find someone else.

Didn't MacFarlane categorically state "never again"? I think the producers would deem him too old, but an old school song and dance man like Dick Van Dyke might be pretty cool as Oscar host. That guy's still very spry. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler would be safe bets, because they did really well as Golden Globes hosts.

I kinda like MacFarlane as the host for Oscar. It was off beat, unexpected and fresh comparing to previous hosts before him. If not him, Christopher Walken.

Werner Herzog?

It'd never happen, but I'd go so far as to say that he'd be the best host in Oscar history if it did.

I actually kind of liked McFarlane, not because he was necessarily a great host, but he had just the right amount of self-aware humor to cut through some of the banality of what Zadan and Meron had put together. In other news, I pretty much hated what the producers did with the show. It felt like they weren't even trying to fool us anymore, which is antithetical to what Hollywood is all

I know Herzog doesn't have a chance but it would be kind of awesome.

Bring him Back for sure

but drop the music and dancing. I know its a staple of the Oscars but its always the weakest part. His standup was spot on and was offensive without being too crude or TOO offensive. People need to take the sticks out of their asses. People who "oooooooooooooo'd" the Lincoln joke...seriously? even Seth said "what? almost 150 years and its still too soon? come on!!! People need more of a sense of humor and need to be less PC.

I thought he did a fairly good job hosting with some funny risky jokes.

What I want the Oscars to focus on is not making the show four to five hours long.
