Seth MacFarlane will never host the Oscars again, according to Seth MacFarlane

02.26.2013

If you watched the 2013 Oscars, then you certainly had an opinion of its host, Seth MacFarlane. From the "We Saw Your Boobs" song and dance number to the off-color remarks made at the expense of the likes of Rihanna and Abraham Lincoln (Abraham Lincoln, for the love of god!), MacFarlane was seen as obnoxious and sexist to some, savagely funny to others. Whatever your thoughts on MacFarlane's job, his hiring apparently worked: the numbers for the show were rather good; certainly better than his predecessor Billy Crystal's 2012 show.

So will the Academy ask him back? They might, but according to MacFarlane, he's done.

The word comes directly from the funnyman's Twitter account. When asked by a follower if he would host the Oscars again "if asked," MacFarlane replied:

"No way. Lotta fun to have done it, though."

MacFarlane didn't elaborate on this any further, although his next tweet may give us some insight into his thinking: "The Oscars is basically the Kobayashi Maru test." This, Trekkies know well, is a reference to the test in the STAR TREK universe that is basically unwinnable.

Additionally, MacFarlane tweeted this Huffington Post article about "the year in sideboob" with the caption, "Interesting article about the press' anger over the Boobs song." Passive-aggressive a little, Seth?

You can say MacFarlane prepared for a backlash: that entire opening bit with William Shatner about how he'd be deemed the worst Oscar host in history (which this writer found lame, but to each his own) was tantamount to punching himself before someone else could punch him. Still, it's possible that the furor over what some saw as a tasteless show affected him more than he could have anticipated. That, or he truly did view it as a one-off.

What do you think: Would you be down for Seth MacFarlane's return to the Oscar stage next year, or helllllll no?

Seth was the least of that show's problems.

He wasn't great but he wasn't terrible either. The entire show had the feel of a dress rehearsal, with odd editing moves and camera angles. The presenter banter was terrible. I've always been annoyed by them using so much time for musical number yet only giving the winners 45 seconds for speeches. Isn't the show supposed to be for the winners? Worst of all was the self-congratulatory tongue bath the producers gave to Chicago, as if that's some kind of Godfather-like, game changer of a

How did ABC and the Academy approve of all the Chicago nonsense. Every year I ask the same question: how hard can it be to produce a good Oscars show?

Seth was out-f**king-standing!

Big time bummer. His hosting and humor was exactly what this already three and a half hour award show needed. Any headline that reads "Seth MacFarlane Hosts Oscars With Sexist and Crude Jokes." All I have to say to that journalist is, "Obliviously your not a golfer".
How are people surprised, especially entertainment journalists? His shows flood the Fox channel airways and now he's making full-length feature films. Time for these people to crawl out from underneath the rock they've been living

Bummer

I truly hated the boob song. I'm a dude and I found it tasteless and inappropraite. But other than that, I thought he did a great job. Seth had some awesome jokes and one liners that had me rolling. I still can't stop laauhing about freeing Don Cheadle.

i nominate Jeff Ross for next year

If it's about ratings throw in someone funny like kevin hart or Jeff Ross. If Jeff ross hosted the oscars, it would be the funniest thing ever. Imagine him roasting all the old farts. Any movie fan that doesn't agree is either a stiff or has no sense of humor

The Oscars is painful enough to watch for six + hours, so why not lighten the mood with a few inappropriate jokes. My suggestions on hosting next year
- Sacha Baron Cohen
- Trey Parker & Matt Stone
- Jason Segel

He was interesting and entertaining and it's probably best that he not come back. The Oscars are too stuffy for his edgy satire, they need someone safe life Billy Crystal.

MacFarlane's approach both did and didn't work

I am no fucken prude nor especially a conservative nor a supporter of censorship. But, I shall suggest the following two truths. One, any author or performer should practice good audience sense. Two, there is a time and a place for everything and every statement and joke. "I Saw Your Boobs" was funny for many viewers. Simply look at how many JoBlo readers suggest that the jingle about jangle should be their new ringtones. However, the song was PERHAPS inappropriate for three reasons. One, the
I am no fucken prude nor especially a conservative nor a supporter of censorship. One, the Oscars ceremony has a certain decorum and polish. Any host should make adjustments for social setting. Two, the Oscars ceremony has a large and varied audience. Therefore, the song is comparable to Janet Jackson showing her breast at the Superbowl. The tit-flash is appropriate in a music video, but it is not exactly right for a mixed audience. Three, jokes should be funny to both the joker and the butt of the joke. Many mentioned actresses were offended. And perhaps, they did the nudity for the extra money in the first place. Perhaps, they were otherwise uncomfortable with it. And remember also, any woman desires and demands control of her own body and how it is discussed and viewed (and yes, I realize that we Schmoes have a very popular Movie Hotties page and post cheesecake in MFC constantly).
The "I Saw Your Boobs" song would work outstandingly on Family Guy. Peter could do a cut-away of when he supposedly hosted the Oscars, and the "Boobs" would be an instant comedy classic. However, the Oscars ceremony is not a satirical moment broadcast during a bawdy Animation Domination block on Fox. Sunday night Fox viewers know that they receive such humor when watching. Oscar viewers were perhaps not expecting it. As stated, there is a best time and place for everything. In rhetoric, this concept is called kairos: a speaker/performer might have a good statement to make, but he should wait for the right moment to make it.

So, MacFarlane should have perhaps remembered that he was not doing a Family Guy and American Dad. He is a talented artist; therefore, he could have shown his range. Robert DeNiro (and many others present at the ceremony) could have shown him how. DeNiro has appeared on Sesame Street and in PG-rated fare and in R-rated fare. He adjusts his performance for whichever audience for whom he performs and he does an excellent job in all situations. I am nobody. However, I even know that I should not be my foul-mouthed self in front of all audiences. And, I love dirty jokes and supposedly "dirty" language, and I have a right to use it even in a church. However, does even a nobody--with no audience (e.g. how people are even going to read this comment?)--know adjust his approach for best interpersonal communication and social statement? Sure. MacFarlane should have understood that he was neither presenting a Family Guy script (such as he and the cast did with a live reading of Partial Terms of Endearment) nor doing a Comedy Central Roast.
It's a little shame. MacFarlane does not want to do the Animation Domination stuff forever. He has stated so. And eventually, the public will get sick of him and his material. Unfortunately, that audience fatigue occurs to most artists. Thus, MacFarlane needs a post-Griffins career. He would make an excellent perennial Oscars host. He loves musical numbers, the classics, and family entertainment. If he does not understand and love family entertainment, how does he lampoon sitcoms and other wholesome material so well each week? He could show a different side of himself and be a perfect Oscar host. Billy Crystal was one for years. He was one performer on-stage at the Academy Awards and a different performer on SNL, in his stand-up, and in his movies. IMHO, he shold have perhaps taken a different approach.
But, was he funny as is Sunday? Sure. At times. Kind of. I laughed occasionally.

The guy was the funniest host in the past 10 years.

I am very disappointed he will not be returning. He got the ratings up like 30% and was an excellent performer.

Is anyone really happy with the Oscars host?

Is anyone really happy with who host the Oscars? People hated on Jackman, Franco, Ricky...and so on. I think they are just a scapegoat for the disappointment of the winners of the awards and the fact Nolan never gets nominated!

Absolutely this. Even when people love the Oscar host, they hate them. People can point to all the lame things Seth McFarlane did, but at the end of the day he's right: it's Hollywood's Kobayashi Maru

So I'm not the biggest fan of MacFarlane's work (Family Guy is okay, Ted was really funny, never watched any of his other stuff), but I actually REALLY liked him as a host. I thought that the beginning thing with Shatner went a bit too long but other than that, I dug him. I think it's too bad he's refusing to ever come back.

Actually I thought the ceremony was really good over all, other than the douchery in playing the "Jaws" music and the completely unnecessary tribute to Chicago. I

I think MacFarlane did a fine job and provided the necessary jolt to the joke that is the Oscars. The Oscars are a farce now and have been for a long time. Without someone like MacFarlane to come in and offend people on a level that is necessary, The Oscars would be just another predictable awards show in which Hollywood pats it's own back for doing such a "good" job. Now, I have no problems with the people who won their awards. They're all talented and deserve the recognition, but the Academy

About the only thing to look forward to at the Oscars anymore is the host, and Seth delivered a biting, hilarious, and cringe worthy performance. In mind, being cringe worthy at that ceremony is positive. Anyone with the guts to make fun of Hollywood in the most biting way possible, and to their face no less, is worth watching in my book.

You know what I think...

SHUT THE FUCK UP. Seriously didn't anybody hold a gun to your head and tell you to watch it ? NO! Turn it off, you know it was going to be racy, because he is a racy comidan, do you watch family guy, american dad, ted. People need to grow the fuck up and stop acting like a bunch of fuckin pussies. Grow some balls, and get a sense of humor. Bet you if it was a women their wouldn't of been any issues.

I agree with Shotgun2TheFace. MacFarlane held his own, but other things that were probably beyond his control didn't seem to go all that smoothly at all. I think it was kinda, sorta clever how he did his most "offensive" stuff via proxy: "We Saw Your Boobs" was an "alternate universe", and his crasser jokes were as Ted. However, I'm still trying to get over playing the Jaws theme to chase recipients off the stage, and cutting off Bill Westenhofer just as he was pleading to help save Rhythm and

helllllll no!! Next time they should bring Jay and Silent Bob to host the oscars ;D

I liked his movie Ted but his hosting was so awkward.it was like watching American pie movies(one of my favourites) with your parents.he relied mostly on sex jokes,insult/embarassment humor.he is one of the worst oscar hosts and "we saw your boobs" will remain as nightmare in the history of oscars ceremony.he would make a good host for Teen awards or AVN awards.even though i laughed a lot at his jokes, his style of comedy doesn't suit for oscars family viewing

That's fine by me. I thought there was some funny bits, and he's talented guy, but intro dragged, and I was kind of waiting for him to make more jokes as the ceremony progressed (ie some kind of comment when sam jackson was getting into it w/ the avengers) instead of acting as the please enjoy these words from our sponsors guy. Good to see what different people can do.

He did fine...

It was the event itself that sucked so bad. From all the audio problems, to the way it was shot and to the "Musical" theme, the whole thing just felt like a shittier version of the Tony's and not the grand scale epic event that the Oscars try to hold themselves too. I'm all for cutting back on the snobbery and pretension of past Oscar ceremonies but the allure of Hollywood still lights a spark in most of our eyes and they need to recapture that if they want to make me give a crap again. I found him to be a charming and essentially harmless host. Some of the stuff at the beginning was touch and go but more of it was enjoyable than not. I still can't get over CNN's best Oscar host lost including Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin. That was the worst one I've seen.

He was OK

I'm surprised everyone was so shocked at his skits and jokes. This is the guy who brought you Family Guy and Ted; each the epitome of college humor. If people were hoping for something else then they should have chosen a different host but maybe the average age of the audience would have crept up another year or two. Jennifer Lawrence showed just the right attitude during the "We saw your boobs" song and was a role model for the stuffier 'stars'. It was just a show and it was fine.

Seth is a one time kind of guy so this isn't really surprising. There are plenty of celebrities in Hollywood that the Academy can pick instead of recycling the same faces again and again. I've read some suggestions on other sites of Joseph Gordon-Levitt being a viable candidate or perhaps Will Ferrell and Kristen Wiig.

I think Seth did a fine job. He was funny, and at times borderline offensive which is always worth a good laugh. The only problem I had with the Oscars this year is that the homage to James Bond could have been a lot better.

I'm not a fan of MacFarlane's, but I actually wasn't that turned-off by his hosting gig. Having said that, the whole time it felt like he was treating it like a one-time deal. He wasn't the best host by a long shot, but was a risky choice by Academy standards, in a good way. And some of his best jokes were the ones that didn't go over that well (Mel Gibson was in poor taste, but John Wilkes Booth was pretty damn funny). He was leagues ahead of Franco and Hathaway.

I can't stand him! The first few seasons of family guy were awesome, and roger is the best part of American dad. Ted was incredibly overrated and unfunny. I think I laughed once during the oscars and I can't remember why. He's just an attention whore who needs to go away!!

He wasn't bad, it was funny for the most part, but it felt as though the Academy wanted edgy, like Ricky Gervias with the Golden Globes, but they only wanted edgy on their terms. Half of MacFarlane's material felt dialed back from maybe what he really wanted to do. Still think Eddie Murphy would have been good...

I enjoy the type of humor MacFarlane brings to the table but even I was a bit suprised by the We Saw Your Boobs bit. Just did not fit the Oscar mold, it's like hiring a stripper for your grandfathers birthday. People need to realize though that it was pretaped & many of the reactions by the actresses were staged.

A Needed Boost

Billy Crystal is classic, Seth McFarlane brought much needed edge for an elderly show. It would be great if he decides to come back... If not, let JoBlo himself host.

However, I do understand his decision not to do another one (and yes, I've read him say it even before the show).

He brought some much needed energy and creativity to the awards show. He has great stage presence, and is even good at handling the jokes that didn't land.

And that Lincoln joke was hilarious.
