Seven sequel update

Jan. 5, 2009by: Dave Davis

If you were hoping to explore another murder investigation with Morgan Freeman's detective Somerset -- possibly involving a long lost Deadly Sin -- in a sequel to SEVEN (I refuse to write SE7EN because a.) it's stupid, and b.) would be pronounced "Sesevenen"), odds are it's in a box with Gwyneth's head.

When asked about the proposed sequel at the Film Society of Lincoln Center's Q&A for BENJAMIN BUTTON, director David Fincher put it bluntly: "I would be less interested in that than I would in having cigarettes put out in my eyes." You know what that means, right? It means... there's still a chance!

Fincher clarified further: "I keep trying to get out from under my own shadow," he said. "I don't want to do the same shit over and over." Which sort of calls into question the status of NESS (based on the graphic novel "TORSO"), which would be his third film about the hunt for a serial killer... But fear not, Fincher still has at least a half-dozen other potential projects to keep him busy, and at least one of them will probably star Brad Pitt.

And in case you forgot, those rumors about EI8HT started right here...

Extra Tidbit: Way back in 2002, New Line considered reworking a spec script called SOLACE into an actual SEVEN sequel, in which Freeman's cop gains clairvoyant abilities to help him track a psychic killer. I'm NOT making that up.

That's a good thing, Ei8ht would be unnecessary, and a bit stupid.

thank god

A sequel to "Seven" is simply put, just not necessary. Tell me, what aspect of the film's narrative leads anyone to believe that any of the plot threads weren't tied up? No. A proposed "Eight" would ruin anything "Seven" sought to establish. Besides, it's already a perfect piece of modern film noir.

I really think that with all that's going on "Torso" is probably a far cry from what Fincher's looking at today. Just an idea. And that's not necessarily a bad thing. Though I'd love to see that one become a reality, the man has made it a point not to do the same old thing. "Zodiac" is more like "All the President's Men" than it is like "Seven," and I respect that. And while some of Fincher's proposed projects may not sound as appetizing as others, I think he knows exactly what he wants. After

After all, when his serial killer opus came out, would anyone expect him to adapt F. Scott Fitzgerald?

Thank God! I forgot where the rumor came from, and thought this was a real rumor we were talking about... and just a RUMOR about a sequel to "Seven" is scary. I LOVE "Seven" and would absolutely burn a sequel. I don't know exactly what that means, "burn a sequel", but my point is I would be very displeased with the idea... very displeased.

Rama is Dead

Fincher and Freeman were trying to make the first book into a movie since like 2000 or so. But Fincher commented on it a few months ago and said they've pretty much abandoned the idea because they just couldn't get a good enough script. I hope he eventually goes back to sci-fi though. Preferably without the retarded producers.

a sequel to this movie is like getting AIDS except without the fun of having sex to get it.

What the clever guy wrote. If Fincher wants to make sure this movie never gets made, he should say he's doing it and just never make it. That'll stall the studios. Him saying he's officially not doing it is almost the same thing as fast-tracking it into production. Some schmuck director will churn this out direct to DVD, mark my words.

Well we know one thing, if its called Ei8ht, the new sin is obvious: making unneeded sequels, the victim will be the producer of one.

Just because Fincher ain't doin' it doesn't mean someone else ain't gonna snag it up!

I'm sure someone's calling Brett Ratner right now.
