Shane Black feels very confident that Robert Downey Jr. will do Iron Man 4

Apr. 19, 2013by:

In his recent interview with GQ, Robert Downey Jr. may have hinted at taking a break from IRON MAN. This is what he told the magazine:

"It got me thinking about how big the message from your cosmic sponsor needs to be before you pick it up," he tells GQ in a new cover profile. "How many genre movies can I do? How many follow-ups to a successful follow-up are actually fun? I come from a family of very innovative writers and directors and actors and artists, and the circle of friends they were in were the people I heard having pun-offs playing poker at two in the morning, and it was just the most comforting aspect of my childhood. So there's this kind of legacy of souls from what I consider to be a very particular time in entertainment, and I'm sensing a return to that."

But RDJ is just so damn GOOD at being Tony Stark, I mean, he IS Tony Stark! I agree with some of the commenters of the original article that if he doesn't decide to go back to the solo films that we will certainly see him do cameos as the character, but director Shane Black seems to feel very confident that he will make another film:

"I think he'll be back for another one. I'm sure of it."

I think that it will be hard for him to pass up on playing the character again, but whether he comes back to lead a solo movie again is unknown. I feel confident is saying that this isn't the last we've seen of Downey as Stark. We still have two more AVENGERS films!

You said: "Tell that to Stallone, who is 67 and still works out." I say: Stallone takes HGH and was open about using steroids for Rambo III. Downey, Jr. is a recovering addict who's been sober for years. Something tells me he's not gonna be sticking himself with needles and abusing illegal growth hormones any time soon to keep in unnaturally good shape. Stallone also looks gross. Stallone was actually a talented actor (Rocky! Cop Land!) and I think it's a shame how he's sort of allow himself to

Stallone was actually a talented actor (Rocky! Cop Land!) and I think it's a shame how he's sort of allow himself to become a parody of his action persona. He'll never be able to be taken seriously as an actor again because of what he's done to himself. If they cast him in a Scorsese-type ensemble piece, he'd be forced to play a very specific type of role, e.g. a bodybuilder. It's the same problem Mickey Rourke has. Due to how messed up his appearance is nowadays, it's hard to cast him in 'normal' roles, because he naturally looks like some kind of villain or ex-wrestler.

Let him leave while he's still at the top of his game because he'll end doing an impression/parody of the character than playing the character itself; Think Pierce Brosnan in DAD.

I want Downey to keep going as long as he can...but ultimately the role of Iron Man (like any iconic film role) should be passed on to someone else and keep the story going. Future generations of the world should be able to enjoy new Iron Man movies. Imagine they had stopped making Bond movies after Sean Connery left...

RDJ IS Iron Man. There's no two ways about it. He has to come back. And I think he will.

I am all for RDJ playing Iron Man as long as he possibly can & I wouldn't think we would need an Iron Man 4 though, guess depending on what happens in IM3 & Avengers 2. I could see him perhaps doing cameos at least up until Avengers 3. It would suck though to see anyone else play Tony Stark other than RDJ.

I have a feeling he won't leave the role just yet. I'm certain he'll continue play Iron Man in the Avengers sequels regardless, but I'm pretty sure he has one or two stand-alone films in him.

Hey, he got a $50 million paycheck for The Avengers and Iron Man gave him a new lease of acting life, plus everybody absolutely loves him in the role. Hope he sticks with it for as long as possible.

I hope RDJ would come back. I can't imagine who would handle the role as good as him. It's like not having Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. Imagine what would happen if Dougray Scott IS actually Wolverine now?

Nothing wrong with Dougray Scott. But now I have the image of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. He lives and breaths as Wolverine. It'd be a bit strange to see Scott as Wolverine now.

He's 48 years old,

there are only so many times you can work out every day and eat nothing but steamed chicken and brown rice so you can look good for an action role. Hugh Jackman's already starting to eye the end of Wolverine and he's only 44.

Tell that to Stallone, who is 67 and still works out. Same goes for Dolph Lundgren. I can imagine that the whole task of playing Iron Man is quite physically challenging, but it's not like he's lifting weights and hard dieting every day...

Yeah, but action films are all Stallone and Lundgren have. Both Jackman and RDJ are accomplished actors who have done meatier, dramatic roles. Neither are unhappy with the effect Wolverine and Iron Man had on their careers but I'm sure they'd both like to move on at some point.

For some reason it just feels right for him to come back for Iron Man 4. Iron Man 3 already looks like the best Iron Man film yet and if Shane is up for one more film then I can't see why Downey Jr wouldn't want to come back either.

But if Downey is getting fatigued by the character then just have Iron Man 4 kick off Phase 3 or make it the last film of Phase 3 before the final Avengers film.

PLEASE DON'T LEAVE.

Robert jr. Is IronMan. P,ease please don't leave. The dark knight is my all time favorite because I love batman in the dc world. IronMan in my opinion is the batman of Marvel. It's only because of Robert Downeys take on Tony Stark though. ROBERT DOWNNEY JR. Will forever be the best IronMan. I hold IronMan even with Batman. PLEASE DON'T LEAVE JUST YET MISTER DOWNEY.
